  • I grew up with the internet, but first and foremost in libraries, where my love for books started. As I studied to understand digital media, I started realising that the internet would have a transformative effect on all media industries. In 2008, I started teaching a course in digital publishing – ebooks, really – and that’s why I’m here today. I have a few stories about my personal relationship with computers and books in a blog series called: “I’m a geek, but love books first and foremost”: http://kosieeloff.com/2012/01/01/im-a-geek-but-love-books-first-and-foremost-1/Image:http://tallulahlucy.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/internet-addiction.jpg

  • For instance, there are thousands of hits for a search of the term “e-book” or “ebook” on EbscoHost. The terms “electronic book” and “digital book” returned hundreds of hits, but significantly less than the former ones. I also discovered references to terms such as interactive multimedia stories, web-enhanced books, mixed reality books, and 3D books.

  • The system covers the composition of virtual books into advanced 3D-models based on simple 2D-page scans. These 3D-books can then interactively be experienced on 3D- or 2D displays and controlled by contact-free, gestural interaction. These systems have completely been developed by the Fraunhofer HHI, in cooperation with the Bavarian State Library in Munich. http://www.hhi.fraunhofer.de/fields-of-competence/interactive-media-human-factors/products-services/contact-free-interaction/ipoint-control/exhibits/interactive-3d-book-explorer.html
