  4. 4. WEBSITE EVALUATION 2012 4 | P a g e INTRODUCTION TO E-COMMERCE The term Electronic Commercehas been used for describing a verity of market transactions, enabled by information technology and conducted over the electronic network. For example, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors put up a network and required all its parts and sub – assembly suppliers to participate in its electronic data interchange (EDI) over the network. The phenomenal growth of electronic commerce can be attributed to the reduction of friction in business transactions over the network. This reduction has led to improvements in the quality of service, customer care, lower costs to the consumer and faster execution of transactions including instantaneous delivery of goods in some cases (Software, Digital Music). To achieve this, electronic commerce is concerned with system and business processes that support: • Creation of information sources • Movement of Information over Global Networks • Effective and Efficient interaction among Producers, Consumers, Intermediaries, And Sellers. Electronic Commerce utilizes Electronic networks to implement daily economic activities such as pricing, contracting, payments and in some case even the shipment and delivery of goods and services.
  5. 5. WEBSITE EVALUATION 2012 5 | P a g e Benefits of E-commerce E Commerce is one of the most important facets of the Internet to have emerged in the recent times. Ecommerce or electronic commerce involves carrying out business over the Internet with the assistance of computers, which are linked to each other forming a network. To be specific ecommerce would be buying and selling of goods and services and transfer of funds through digital communications. The benefits of Ecommerce: Ecommerce allows people to carry out businesses without the barriers of time or distance. One can log on to the Internet at any point of time, be it day or night and purchase or sell anything one desires at a single click of the mouse. The direct cost-of-sale for an order taken from a web site is lower than through traditional means (retail, paper based), as there is no human interaction during the on-line electronic purchase order process. Also, electronic selling virtually eliminates processing errors, as well as being faster and more convenient for the visitor. Ecommerce is ideal for niche products. Customers for such products are usually few. But in the vast market place i.e. the Internet, even niche products could generate viable volumes. Another important benefit of Ecommerce is that it is the cheapest means of doing business. The day-to-day pressures of the marketplace have played their part in reducing the opportunities for companies to invest in improving their competitive position. If the selling price cannot be increased and the manufactured cost cannot

WEBSITE EVALUATION 2012 6 | P a g e be decreased then the difference can be in the way the business is carried out. From the buyer’s perspective also ecommerce offers a lot of tangible advantages. 1. Reduction in buyer’s sorting out time. 2. Better buyer decisions 3. Less time is spent in resolving invoice and order discrepancies. 4. Increased opportunities for buying alternative products.7.The strategic benefit of making a business ‘ecommerce enabled’, is that it helps reduce the delivery time, labor cost and the cost incurred in the following areas: 5. Document preparation 6. Error detection and correction 7. Reconciliation 8. Mail preparation 9. Telephone calling 10. Data entry 11. Overtime 12. Supervision expenses. Operational benefits of e commerce include reducing both the time and personnel required to complete business processes, and reducing strain on other resources.
  7. 7. WEBSITE EVALUATION 2012 7 | P a g e What is EDI? Electronic Data Interchangeis the exchange of Business documents between any two trading partners in a structured, machine – readable form. It can be used to electronically transmit documents such as purchase-orders, invoices, shipping bills, receiving advices, and other standard business correspondence between trading partners. EDI can also be used in exchanging financial information and payments in electronic form. The Electronic fund transfer (EFT) system used by the financial institutions are a prime example of the application of EDI in the banking and financial sector. EDI is the computer to computer exchange of business data in standards formats. It is the transfer of data between different companies using networks, such as the internet. As more and more companies get connected to the internet, EDI is becoming increasingly important as an easy mechanism for companies to buy, sell, and trade information. World Wide Web The World Wide Web, abbreviated as WWW and commonly known as The Web, is a system of interlinked hypertext documents contained on the Internet. With a web browser one can view web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigate between them by using hyperlinks. Using concepts from earlier hypertext systems, British engineer and computer scientist Sir Tim Berners Lee, now the Director of the World Wide Web
  8. 8. WEBSITE EVALUATION 2012 8 | P a g e Consortium, wrote a proposal in March 1989 for what would eventually become the World Wide Web. He was later joined by Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliau while both were working at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1990, they proposed using "Hypertext [...] to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the user can browse at will”, and released that web in December. "The World-Wide Web (W3) was developed to be a pool of human knowledge, which would allow collaborators in remote sites to share their ideas and all aspects of a common project." If two projects are independently created, rather than have a central figure make the changes, the two bodies of information could form into one cohesive piece of work.
