Rubric for Assignment 2

Instructions
• The objective of the assignment is to make
  sure you understand what is asked, rather
  than just write the answers without thinking
• Instead of coming up with rote / by-hearted
  lines, try to come up with explanations in your
  own words
Instructions
• The aim of the test is to know
  – How well you understood the concepts discussed
    in the class
  – How well you can integrate them
  – How you can use the concepts in some real life
    situations
Question 1
• What comprises the research report? What
  are the pitfalls that the researcher needs to
  avoid while preparing the research report?
Question 1
• You need to detail the various components of
  a research report (Discussed in the last
  presentation)
• Various points to keep in mind while
  preparing a research report
Question 2
• Are an equal number of home-based
  businesses owned by men & women? A recent
  study of 899 home-based businesses reported
  that 369 were owned by women. Is there
  evidence that there are an equal number of
  home-based businesses owned by men &
  women? Use a 0.05 level of significance
• Need to find whether the proportion of
  females owning a home-based business are
  equal to the proportion of males owning a
  home-based business
• Need to write null and alternative hypotheses
• Calculate the critical value using appropriate
  test
• Write a conclusion based on the result
Question 3
• A Company manufactures steel bars. If the production
  process is working properly, it turns out steel bars with an
  average length of at least 2.8 meters with a standard
  deviation of 0.20 meter (as determined from the engineering
  specifications of the production equipment involved). Longer
  steel bars can be used or altered, but shorter bars must be
  scrapped. A sample of 25 bars is selected from the production
  line. The sample indicates an average length of 2.73 meter.
  The company wishes to determine whether the production
  equipment needs an alignment. If the company wishes to test
  the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance, what decision
  would it make using the critical value approach to hypothesis
  testing?
• Need to state the management problem
  clearly
• State the null and alternative hypotheses
• Calculate the critical value using appropriate
  test
• Write a conclusion based on the result
Question 4
• When one can use observation as a useful
  technique for market research? Explain the
  classifications associated with observational
  research
• State the uses of observational method in
  marketing research
• Write various kinds of observational research,
  and specific instances when they can be used
Case Study –
         Consumer Satisfaction
• You need to do some background research
  regarding the industry and usage in order to
  come up with various aspects which might
  lead to customer satisfaction (Please refer to
  scale construction which we discussed in the
  class)
• Come up with a scale which precisely
  measures customer satisfaction for washing
  machine brand

  • 2. Instructions • The objective of the assignment is to make sure you understand what is asked, rather than just write the answers without thinking • Instead of coming up with rote / by-hearted lines, try to come up with explanations in your own words
  • 3. Instructions • The aim of the test is to know – How well you understood the concepts discussed in the class – How well you can integrate them – How you can use the concepts in some real life situations
  • 4. Question 1 • What comprises the research report? What are the pitfalls that the researcher needs to avoid while preparing the research report?
  • 5. Question 1 • You need to detail the various components of a research report (Discussed in the last presentation) • Various points to keep in mind while preparing a research report
  • 6. Question 2 • Are an equal number of home-based businesses owned by men & women? A recent study of 899 home-based businesses reported that 369 were owned by women. Is there evidence that there are an equal number of home-based businesses owned by men & women? Use a 0.05 level of significance
  • 7. • Need to find whether the proportion of females owning a home-based business are equal to the proportion of males owning a home-based business • Need to write null and alternative hypotheses • Calculate the critical value using appropriate test • Write a conclusion based on the result
  • 8. Question 3 • A Company manufactures steel bars. If the production process is working properly, it turns out steel bars with an average length of at least 2.8 meters with a standard deviation of 0.20 meter (as determined from the engineering specifications of the production equipment involved). Longer steel bars can be used or altered, but shorter bars must be scrapped. A sample of 25 bars is selected from the production line. The sample indicates an average length of 2.73 meter. The company wishes to determine whether the production equipment needs an alignment. If the company wishes to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance, what decision would it make using the critical value approach to hypothesis testing?

Explain the classifications associated with observational research • State the uses of observational method in marketing research • Write various kinds of observational research, and specific instances when they can be used

Case Study – Consumer Satisfaction • You need to do some background research regarding the industry and usage in order to come up with various aspects which might lead to customer satisfaction (Please refer to scale construction which we discussed in the class) • Come up with a scale which precisely measures customer satisfaction for washing machine brand
