  • The National portfolio fosters informed and engaged communities by discovering and spreading civic innovations,with the transformative goal of igniting active citizenship. This leads to more resilient communities, where residents have more control over their destinies.This goal is shared with the Communities Program, but the National Program’s brief is wider: We seek the best ideas wherever they may emerge, and spread them across the country – to Knight communities and others -- to amplify their impact. As you know we work in the eight Knight communities, but also in 18 other communities through partnerships with their community foundations.National initiatives also help increase Knight's impact by establishing common frameworks through which we can invest, learn, develop expertise and establish brand identity in key subject areas.
  • As Knight heightened its efforts to have a transformative impact, the communities program and national moved from replicating best practices to seeking innovative approaches. This exploration of how to have transformative impact led us to new partners in the public, private and social sectors; a new appreciation of our core competencies and ultimately the realization that Knight’s unique perspective was itself a lever for lasting, visible change in communities. Our perspective is that informed and engaged communities are better places to live, work and play. And that in our increasingly complex and fast-paced times, communities that have more engaged residents will be more resilient. Today, unlike in years past, all the foundation’s efforts are viewed through the lens of community. The national portfolio is rooted in communities in a way it simply wasn’t in the past. Through it we make direct investments in Knight communities, test activities we think could scale to Knight communities and others and provide field building and national leadership.
  • Earlier, Trabian shared that Knight’s spending in communities has been about 60 percent of the total payout since 2007. Let’s take a deeper dive into the national payout trends. More than half of national grants are disbursed in communities, with the bulk of the money increasingly going into the resident 8 communities on which we decided to focus with adoption of the strategic plan in 2009.The balance is spent for national learning, research or pilots that could scale to Knight communities and others across the country. From the graph you see that in 2010 the national payout directly to Knight communities slumped as we intensified research and development activities that supported our strategic shift to informed and engaged.
  • In dollar terms, that means that close to $19 million in grants from the National Programs has been disbursed in the eight resident communities since 2007, with close to $9 million more to the non-resident communitiesIt’s important to know that these dollars aren’t specifically earmarked for communities. Rather, when a national grant is made, the community program directors and national team work together to select the appropriate community or communities. ***************PE background data******************************Here’s what we find in the current active grant portfolio:17 percent to Detroit13 percent to both Miami and Philadelphia7 percent to St. Paul4 percent to Akron5 percent to San Jose and 3 percent to Charlotte and MaconAdditionally, 12 percent of the money goes to the 18 nonresident communities,.PE notes: Nonresident mixed.   • Let’s revisit how the national portfolio advances full, active, participatory citizenship. I say re-visit, because we have discussed a number of these initiatives in detail with you during the December board orientation and at the March meeting.  In addition, we’ve provided a one-page summary of the major initiatives with your pre-board reading materials.  I’ll go quickly so that we have time for conversation about them.
  • Tech for EngagementOnline tools for offline engagement. Begun in 2010 and hitting its stride. You (heard or will hear) today more about the most recent round of grants, a summit that brought together leading practitioners and academics pioneering this burgeoning field and our other field building activities. Universal broadband access. Knight stood for this early with the strong view that no citizen should be left behind. We made our first grant in 2005 in Milledgville, Ga. The Knight Commission on Information Needs joined the call. Our approach has evolved and adapted from supporting communities in providing access; to the additional focus on acquiring digital skills and adoption. Connect2Compete founding. Public libraries as essential 21st century democratic institutions. Focus on access; digital skill development; content creation and engagement hubs. . We’re working with key national library organizations and four specific Knight library systems that have the vision and leadership to be model-makers. They are: St. Paul, San Jose, Philadelphia and Miami.
  • Soul of the Communityw/ GallupStrengthen and leverage the passion and loyalty residents have to the place they live. Create environments in which engagement thrives. Three years research found Openness; social offerings; aesthetics drive attachment. Several grants made to community organizations that wanted to test and implement. Developing next phase of work now.
  • Change leadersIdentify and support transformational leaders, many of them young, …i.e.national urban fellow; women of tomorrow; TED Women; youth venture Social entrepreneurship. Early in the field w/ Wendy Kopp……. Models of active citizens creating innovative solutions.
  • Resident EngagementCitizen centered solutions to address community issues. Focus on new civic infrastructures and resident engagement in co-creating solutions.Naturalization to strengthen attachment and the exercise of full citizenship. Developing an innovative process with a collaboration of national funders who have contributed $18 million. 800,000 identified
  • I’ve just summarized the themes of our work to promote full, active, participatory citizenship. Let’s talk a snapshot look at this portfolio. We’re now talking about the financial commitments pledged for all national grants that currently are ACTIVE.Of the more than $50 million approved, resident engagement and technology for engagement account for 38 percent and 30 percent respectively. We’ve footnoted workforce development, which I did not talk about earlier, because even though Knight has helped lead this innovative approach to transforming workforce training so that workers and business are true partner, it no longer fits our strategy. ********PE needs specific percentages for each line as background************ The Technology for Engagement category consists of 39 grants totaling just over $15 million.  Within the Technology for Engagement category, national has invested in 19 grants at $9.3 million as part of our Technology for Engagement initiative; 8 grants at $2.7 million in universal access; and 12 grants at $2.9 million in libraries The Resident Participation category consists of 20 grants totaling $19.5 million.Resident participation has two types of grants: Citizen-centered solutions in which we invested $12.9 million in 11 grants; and Naturalization where we have invested nearly $6.8 million in 9 grants. The Innovation in Leadership category consists of 24 grants totaling $15.1 million.This category is made up of investments in transformational leaders. We have made 15 grants at $6.5 million in transformational leaders. This category also consists of 6 workforce grants at $6.015 million and 3 social entrepreneurship grants at $2.5 million.The final category is Soul of the Community, where we have made 6 grants at $1.085 million. We’ve footnoted workforce development, which I did not talk about earlier, because even though Knight has helped lead this innovative approach to transforming workforce training so that workers and business are true partner, it no longer fits our strategy.
  • So to sum up, Knight is a national foundation with strong local roots.  The National program reflects that – we work with the program directors in the Knight communities to identify the best ideas nationwide, and then develop then in partnership with the communities.  It’s not just National that operates this way – the Arts and Journalism and Media Innovation programs also leverage our strength in Knight communities. We work outside Knight Communities as well, as they seek the best ideas, unbound by geography.  But Knight’s direct presence in eight communities and indirect presence in 18 others is a major source of strength for the foundation’s national initiatives, and for the foundation itself.
