  2. 2. Las Vocales There are only 5 vowel sounds in Spanish.  /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/ No matter where these sounds are in the word they will always sound the same.  C A S A,  E S C U E L A,  C A F E,  HOGAR

Las consonantes Most consonants sound the same as in English. There are some differences:  H is soundless.  G sounds like /g/ next to A, O, U : GATO, GORRA, GUSANO  G sounds like /h/ next to E, I : GITANO, GENERO  J sounds like /h/ : JARRA, JUNTO, JUEZ  Ñ sounds like /ny/ a short /n/ followed by /y/
