2. 1. Which magazine would you be most
likely to buy?
For the first question the audience had to circle the answers, they had the choice from the following:
•
•
•
•
•
Top of the pops
Go girl
Rolling stones
Smash hits
Gossip girl
From the results I got I could see a clear pattern in the magazine people choose depending on their age
and gender.
From my findings I found that males picked out of Smash hits or the Rolling stones. Not one male
chose: Top of the pops, Go girl and Gossip girl this is because the target audience of these are
clearly females not males. The ages of the males picking the Rolling stones and Smash hits had a
pattern as the younger the male person was (9, 16 & 19) the most likely they would go for Smash
hits and the older males tended to go for the Rolling stones (16, 16, 18, 29 & 42).
For the females not one picked Smash hits. Their was a relation between their ages and the magazines
they picked. Every person under the age of 16 didn’t pick Rolling stones. This shows that the rolling
stones has an older appeal as they were 16, 25 & 30. Out of the three girly magazines Go
girl, Gossip girl and Top of the pops the one that seems the most popular is Top of the pops. Its
target audience is teenagers around 12-17 year olds, unlike Go girl which was picked by younger
children aged 8. Gossip girl was in between the two with readers aged 10-12 as this magazine
includes a bit of both mixed together.
3. 2. How often do you go to concerts
and festivals?
From looking at the pie chart below you can see the most popular is ‘sometimes’ the people
that chose this were male and female. Most younger children said ‘never’ this is as they’re to
young to go into that type of atmosphere. Most teens said ‘when I can afford to’ as they have
to earn their own money now. Then people who said all the time where adults that tended to
be males.
How often do you go to concerts?
All the time
Sometimes
When I can afford to
Never
4. 3. How much would you be willing to
spend on a music magazine?
Many people choose to spend different amounts on magazines. Most teens
don’t spend a big amounts on magazines unlike adults who spend more.
As you can see no female or male under the age of 20 are willing to spend up to £.00£.99 on a music magazines most of them are happy with spending 99-£1.99 unlike the
adults who will pay more. This is why more under magazines are paper thin ad older
magazines have nice quality paper which is more thick with better clear images.
5. 4. How often, ideally, would you like a
music magazine to be released?
• 7 people said they’d like their magazine released
weekly, mostly male and female but they were all under the
age of 17. From this I can tell most teens prefer a weekly
magazine.
• 6 people said they’d like their magazine released monthly, the
people that said this were both male and female but all older.
The youngest was 16 and the rest were over 30. from this I
can tell older people prefer magazines monthly as they don’t
read it all the time.
• 3 people said they’d like their magazine to be released
fortnightly. These were teen girls from 12-19 which shows you
get the odd people that like it in between.
6. 5. Which of the following to you is the
most important in a music magazine?
Most important in a music magazine
CD reviews
Gig reviews
Information about new
bands
Tour dates
Competitions
Information about a new band was the most popular and also every teen picked this
as older people picked more competitions and gig reviews. Everyone also enjoyed CD
reviews as the ages for this was mixed.
7. 6. What gender of a music would you
say you listen to the most?
This question was an open question and the genders said wereEveryone under 18 said
Hip/Hop
Pop
R&B
Everyone 19-29 said
Rap
R&B
Rock
Everyone 30 and older said
80’s
R&B
Rock
From this you can tell that R&B is
popular for most ages. For my
music magazine the gender is pop
so I can tell its mot popular for
boys and girls under 18!
8. 7.What band/artist do you enjoy
listening/reading about the most?
• The people who said they would buy Top of the Pops said
they listen to Rihanna, Katy Perry and Little mix.
• The people who said they would buy Go girl said they listen
to 1 Direction and Cody Simpson.
• The people who said they would buy Rolling stones said
they listen to AC/DC, Drake, Trey Songz, Tina
Turner, Beyonc’e, London Grammar, Rolling Stones, Calvin
Harris, Jay-Z and Eminem.
• The people who said they would buy Smash hits said they
listen to Rihanna and Brittany.
• The people who said they would buy Gossip girl said they
listen to 1 Direction, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber.
9. 8.What do you prefer to see in a music
Interviews
magazine?
Real-life stories
Male, 42, 29
Female 30
This shows that Real- life
stories stand at to more
older people than the
teens.
Posters
Female, 8, 10, 12, 17
Gossip
Female, 12, 10,
30, 17
Pics
Female, 16,
12, 10, 8, 25
Female, 17
Male, 16
Most teens like to know what going
on with celebrities as they find
them as inspirations.
Posters stand out more to females
Which tend to be younger. This is very
Popular so it would be good to include
Into any music magazine
Only the women are interested in the gossip. Any
age, mostly older teens like listening to what the
magazine has to say about the celebrities to find
out all the gossip true or not so true.
Pictures are mostly enjoyed by women but it
also means they can read less. Any age tend
to like pictures as they get a visual looks not
just writing.
Lyrics
Male, 9,19
Most males seem to be into
knowing the lyrics of songs
as they don’t seem to
interested in the other
things like gossip.
Review
Male, 16
As only one person said
this it shows it isn’t very
popular in a music
magazine.
10. 9. Do you tend to use the contents
page?
I asked when they use the contents page and if so how often and why. To break this down I asked them to tick
one of the followingAll the time.
3.5
Only to see a certain story from the cover page.
Occasionally.
3
Male under 16
Never, I just flick through.
2.5
2
1.5
1
0.5
0
Female under 16
Male over 17
female over 17
From these results males had quite a
spread as they all said different so its like
a personal preference however it shows
that females do read the contents page.
Not all the time mostly occasionally or to
find a certain story on the cover page.
This shows that females do concentrate
on the cover page and certain stories can
pull them in.
11. Reponses to my magazine
From the questionnaires I have found out a lot of useful information
that I will be considering when designing my magazine. From this
questionnaire iv’e found my target audience is teens. The gender of my
magazine is pop and everyone that picked pop were between the ages of 7
-17. No boys picked any of the girly magazine so clearly it will be for girls. Just
focussing on the questionnaires from the girls aged between 7-17 I found the
price they pick are from 99p up as they will pick the cheapest. For this group I
also found they like magazines to be released weekly so as they’re buying
often it needs to be cheaper so they buy a lot of these magazines. For these
girls I found they like to see Justin Bieber, 1 Direction, Katy Perry, Rihanna and
Cody Simpson in their magazines also they prefer hearing gossip about them
and seeing pics of them. I asked if they use the contents page the average
response I got from girls under 16 was that they occasionally look at it and
sometimes looking for a certain page number from a story they have seen on the
cover page.
