Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

  1. 1. The models eyes are looking into the camera to show how she is trying to engage with the reader giving the impression she is looking into the readers eyes, making a personal connection. The model is leaning forward because it shows that she is trying to reach out to the reader to make them buy the magazine. The model is smiling to make her approachable, and also for the readers first judgment of her being ‘nice’ so that they want to purchase the magazine and read more about her. The dark lipstick emphasises on the genre she is from, which would draw in readers who listen to indie rock as they would recognise these colours on other artists. The model is wearing a tartan dress to show she is up to date with fashion and also tartan resembles the ‘indie rock’ genre, many teenage girls would get intrigued by this the most as they would see her as style icon and be like her, making them want to purchase the magazine.
  2. 2. I have used hybrid of high and low key lighting to make the magazine welcoming but also contrasting. The use of this colour scheme is to link it with indie rock. Many [indie] rock magazines generically use black, red and white. These colours allows indie rock fans to indicate what magazines include their favourite genre, as it is the usual colour scheme they see in other magazines. These colours are also very bold, which depicts how the magazine would stand out from other magazines surrounding this magazine. But it could easily get camouflaged with other [indie] rock magazines, to avoid this you have to correctly make your magazine stand out, possibly by using more white or red.
  3. 3. I have decided to use a variety of fonts in my magazine to mix it up and make it interesting. Most of the fonts I’ve used on my front cover and content page are big and bold to lure the readers into picking up the magazine and wanting to read the story that attracted them to the magazine. I have used soft curly fonts for the models name to the magazine more feminine and focus only on the artists, this could also appeal to young females as they’ll like the font and would want to read more about this female artist.
  4. 4. I have made the logo big and bold so that it is easy to catch readers eyes, by doing this the readers will remember the magazine and become intrigued by it. I have used abbreviations on my magazine as they are much more simple and catchier than having the full name. By doing this, the logo would be stuck in readers heads which would make them remember easily and also tell their friends/other people about the magazine, creating a bigger audience to the magazine.
  5. 5. The language I have used in my magazine is rather straight forward but it’s also interesting. I’ve made the language similar to NMEs language style as it’s not as formal as Q magazines, meaning it’s easier for teenagers to read but not too basic like a pre-teen magazine. I have picked out this quote as a ’band quote’ to draw in mainly females. While young females see this, they will think of the artist as a role model to them. This wouldn’t really reach out to many males but the fast majority of females would buy this magazine more, making it more feminine. For example, in the stand first I have I used the word ‘damn’ to intrigue teenagers as it’d be the word that stands out the most and is commonly used as ‘slang’. The use of ‘heavenly-voiced’ also catches the readers eye as it makes the reader want to listen to her songs and get to know the artist more.
  6. 6. The images I have used for ‘Cara Young’ portrays the indie rock style she posses. The clear indie rock style is shown through the models outfit, make-up and props. I made the model hold a cigarette in her hand as many females and males smoke in the indie rock genre, luring indie rock fans as they have seen other artists also smoking. The make-up and dress are both dark to emphasise on the [indie] rock genre. As a young female, this would attract young males as they would think she is attractive , young females would be intrigued by this as they would think of her as a role model.
  7. 7. I have added an image from when I went to see The Vaccines onto my content page. This will attract readers who are aware of this band and are fans , to see what other artists/bands there are with the same music genre. The brief article will allow them to become intrigued with what other bands that they like are in the magazine, creating a bigger audience for the magazine.
