Our Goal <ul><li>Keep Virginia Beach Public Schools up-to-date with growing competition in technology </li></ul><ul><li>Implement a ‘green initiative’ into schools </li></ul><ul><li>Compress budgets while still providing high quality materials and sources </li></ul><ul><li>Improve the overall structure and learning that will allow students to excel at higher levels in the future </li></ul>

Current Situation <ul><li>Budget for textbooks is 8 million per year </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Only one subject’s textbook can be updated each year (ex) All textbook in English dept. will be updated in the 2009-2010 school year </li></ul></ul><ul><li>In Landstown High School, there are currently 70 laptop carts with 20 laptops per cart ≈ $6400 per cart </li></ul><ul><li>As of June 2008 the textbook fund in the city of Virginia Beach was $17,690,637 (VB Budget Responses to Council Questions) </li></ul>

Budget <ul><li>$278 per Netbook </li></ul><ul><ul><li>8.9 inch display </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>1024x600 resolution </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>2.4 lbs </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>16GB SDD or 120GB HDD </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Intel Atom 1.6 GHz Processor </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Approximately 21,985 students currently enrolled in VBPS </li></ul><ul><li>Approximately $8 million dollar plan </li></ul><ul><ul><li>≈ 2400 students per school x 11 schools = 26400 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>26400 VB High School Students x $278 cost of Netbook = $7,339,200 plus maintenance fees, training, and accessories </li></ul></ul>

VBCPS Statistics <ul><li>11 schools in the Beach District </li></ul><ul><ul><li>7 out of 11 are academies/magnet schools </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Each has between 2000-2400 students </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Teacher: Student Ratio is between about 1:17 </li></ul><ul><li>Virginia Beach median household income is $61,234 </li></ul>
  7. 7. Benefits <ul><li>Portable (Between 2-3 lbs.) ; Low cost compared to textbook fees </li></ul><ul><li>Easy to redistribute </li></ul><ul><li>Up-to-date </li></ul><ul><li>Low power consumption </li></ul><ul><li>Easy to use and flexible </li></ul>

Implementing Netbooks <ul><li>Teachers will take 3 day training session </li></ul><ul><li>Each school will purchase between 2500-2700 Netbooks </li></ul><ul><li>Netbooks will be rented annually; a one time $70 fee will be required per student </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Students from low income families will be exempted from the fee </li></ul></ul><ul><li>One- year warranty will come with Netbook </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Students will pay for damages not covered by warranty </li></ul></ul>

Forecasted Dates <ul><li>2010-2011 School Year: Bring Netbooks to Academies; Give laptops from carts and labs to middle schools </li></ul><ul><li>2011-2012 School Year: Begin to issue Netbooks to all schools of Virginia Beach Public Schools </li></ul><ul><li>2012-2013 School Year: Completely phase out textbooks </li></ul>
