Perry's epistemic cognitive theory

  1. 1. V.M.WESTERBERG'S SUPER BRIEF DEVELOPMENTAL THEORIES SERIES. PERRY’S EPISTEMIC COGNITION Perry interviewed Harvard students at end of each year of college about “what stood out” from the prior year. He observed : 1. Dualistic thinking (either/or)—younger students think ing black/white. Dividing information, values, and authority into right and wrong, good and bad, we and they. 2. Relativistic thinking (it’s all relative, grey scale of options)—older students and all adults. There is no absolute truth but multiple truths, depending on the context / situation (like Kohlberg’s post- conventional morality)
