  2. 2. Acharya P C Ray National Young Scientists Conference India has a long tradition of scientific culture and remained as beacon of wisdom andlearning. Acharya P C Ray advocated ‘We have reason to believe that ancient India was the cradleof Mathematical sciences’. Acharya’s book, ‘A History of Hindu Chemistry’ gives detailed accountof our scientific heritage and Indian contribution to science. In the pre-independence Britishperiod, some great scientists took giant efforts to revive our scientific tradition. Acharya PrafullaChandra Ray was pioneer among them. India having the third largest number of scientific human resources and being fast growingdeveloping nation is at the verge of many basic issues which can be addressed through theintervention of science and technology. In the world of scientific community, India is going tocontribute the biggest number of young scientists and technocrats. National Young Scientists’ Dr A P J Abdul Kalam garlandingConference at Kolkata is one of the largest conglomeration of Young scientists and students of Acharya P C Ray’s photo on hisIndia discussing and debating their research findings and the present scenario in the Indian 150th Birth Day in Keral with Engineer A Jayakumar, General Secretary,context. The need and the issues related to scientific research in many fields will be discussed in Vijnana Bharati, on his right sidegroups as well as together with the policy makers and the great scientists of the country. Acharya P C Ray (born on 2 August 1861), the father of Indian Chemical Industry and a rolemodel in the scientific world, is a real inspiration and guiding force for the younger generation. Thisconference has been dedicated to Acharya P C Ray to commemorate his 150th birth anniversary tohighlight his contributions. Acharya started his journey as a teacher and scientist in the Presidency College (nowPresidency University) in 1889 and continued there till his retirement at 1916 and thereaftercompleted his journey and spent rest of his life from 1916 to 1936 in the University College ofScience, Calcutta University where he built up the department of Chemistry to a great height andbreathed his last in a room at the campus. Both the Universities nourished and cherished byAcharya P C Ray’s presence and contributions have joined together with Vivekananda VijnanMission (Bengal chapter of Vijnana Bharati) to organise this Young Scientists’ Conference. This isthe third National Young Scientists’ Conference initiated by Vijnana Bharati. We are most privileged and confident in announcing this unique scientific meet at the Procession by students at Howrah onpremises of Presidency University and Calcutta University.
