a friend in the street who told me to go straight to the labour
exchange. So, I went there to ask about getting a job and guess
what happened - they asked me to work for them at the labour
exchange. And now I have the perfect job: helping people to
find jobs. And, more important, I’m going to keep it.

4. Infinitiivin edessä käytetään yleensä to-partikkelia
Verbin perusmuoto eli infinitiivi voi olla lauseessa:
1. toisen verbin jäljessä
My little brother has learned to talk.
Huom! Joidenkin verbien jälkeen(ask, like, tell, want )
tulee usein henkilöä tark. sana ennen infinitiiviä:
Dad told me to go to bed
2. substantiivin jäljessä
We have no time to wait.
3. pronominin jäljessä
I have something to say to you.

5. 4. adjektiivin jäljessä
It’s easy to speak English.
5. kysymyssanan jäljessä
I knew what to do.
6. tarkoituksen ilmaisu
Fred rushed home to check his mail.
( in order to check..)

6. Infinitiivi ilman to-partikkelia
Infinitiivin edellä ei käytetä to-partikkelia, jos sitä edeltää:
1. apuverbi
Everybody can help one another.
2. aistihavaintoa ilmaiseva verbi
( feel, hear, notice, see, watch..)
The teacher heard Joe whisper.
3. verbit let ja make
(antaa jkn tehdä jtk; saada joku tekemään jtk )
Let me help you. Mum made Dad fix the table.
4. sanonta had better (olisi parasta)
You’d better study these rules!

7. Kielteinen infinitiivi
’olla tekemättä’
kielteisissä muodoissa käytetään
not-sanaa ennen infinitiiviä:
The kids promised not to make a noise.
( olla metelöimättä)
We had better not forget his words.
( olla unohtamatta)
