And hold fast, all together, to the ropewhich Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided amongyourselves; And remember with gratitude Allah’s favour on you; Foryou were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by HisGrace, you became brothers; And you were on the brink of the pit offire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make His signs clearto you: that you may be guided.”11 al-Qur’an, Surah aal ‘Imraan, 3: 102 - 103

  8. 8. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah8About the AuthorSheikh Abu Bilal Al Halabi was born in the ancient Islamiccity of al-Halab (Aleppo) Syria. In the earlyeighties, Sheikh Abu Bilal then moved to Saudi Arabia, where he joined the Madrassah al-Saltiyyah studying andcompleting a Diploma in Jami’ al-Qur’an.
  9. 9. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah9Following a period of deep research, studies and reflectionSheikh Abu Bilal changed his ‘Aqeedah from ascribing tothe deviant and innovated Maaturidi beliefs to that of theSahabah and the Salaf ul-Saalih, the Aqeedah of Ahl us-Sunnah Wal-Jama’ah.He is the author of many books in Arabic and English, some published and others unpublished including:Usul al-Fiqh (The Foundation of Islamic Jurisprudence)Khabar al-Ahad (The book on single reports)Ahl al-Sunnah Wal-Jama’ah (their beliefs, attributes and titles)As-Sahabah the Islamic StandardThe world has been divided into two campsQawol al-SahabiThe Fruits of at-TawheedThe Road to JannahIn addition to being a speaker and khateeb in manymosques, he also has audio and visual tapes, including thecommentary on the Quran.
  10. 10. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah10PREFACEKey to Arabic symbols in this book:‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ ta ‘ala (The Most High): usually mentioned after Allah’sname.T Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam (May the peace and blessingsof Allah be upon him): usually mentioned after the ProphetMuhammad’s name.Z Radiyallahu ‘Anhu (May Allah be pleased with him):usually mentioned after the name of a companion, though itis not limited to them.[ Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem (In the name of Allah, TheMost Merciful, The Most Kind): mentioned at the start ofevery chapter of this book.(ra) Radiyallahu ‘Anhaa or Radiyallahu ‘Anhum (May Allah bepleased with her or May Allah be pleased with them)Mentioned after the name of a female companion or agroup of companions.(as) ‘Alaihis Salaam (Peace be upon him)Usually mentioned after the name of a prophet or angel.
  11. 11. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah11In the name of Allah, al-Rahman, al-Raheem. All praise isfor Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and may the peace andblessings of Allah be upon the Messenger of Allah andupon his family, his descendants and his companions andthose who follow him. I testify that there is none worthy ofworship besides Allah alone and He has no partner and noneed for any helper, partner or offspring, and I testify thatMuhammad ibn Abdillah ibn Abdil Muttalib is the last andfinal Messenger of Allah. The book has been set out detailing firstly, each article ofnecessary knowledge and then a brief explanation with oneor a few evidences from the Qur’an and Sunnah. This book was adapted from a list researched and compiledby Sheikh Abu Bilal Al Halabi a few years before the newmillennium (CE). This original list was not elaborated withevidences or explanations and was intended as a quickreference for any Muslim to check that they have thisnecessary knowledge.Sheikh Abu Bilal then continued to lecture and teach aboutall of these points in extensive and detailed lectures aroundthe UK regularly with many evidences and over manyyears.
  12. 12. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah12I then began work on this book, elaborating on each pointwith evidences that I found in my notes and those of othercompanions of the Sheikh including Abu Luqman, AbuMaryam and Abdul Hadee, taken in lectures by SheikhAbu Bilal, which we attended and from private and publicQuestion & Answer sessions with him. For this reason, credit for the research in this book, with the grace of Allah, belongs to Sheikh Abu Bilal. If there are mistakes in thisbook, particularly in explanations that I have added frommy own notes, it is likely to be my own fault and so blameshould not immediately go to Sheikh Abu Bilal himself.I found that each point raised in this book can be explainedat great length. In fact detailed books with lengthydiscussions about the details and evidences could easily becompiled for each point (262 in all). The intention of this book however, is not to give a longdiscussion or to explore the detailed and minute points ofjurisprudence that arises from these matters (many ofwhich have differences of opinion). Rather it is intended tobe a reference for the new Muslim or the newly practisingMuslim, or a starting point for the English-speakingstudent of knowledge to learn about Islam. For these reasons I have deliberately avoided, wherepossible, any discussion about matters disputed by anyschool of thought in my explanations. I have also avoidedoverwhelming the pages with evidences about any singlepoint. Instead, I have tried to limit each point to two orthree of the most relevant and most authentic evidences.
  13. 13. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah13There are a few points that, due to the tremendousimportance of or the prevalent ignorance and confusionabout them, I have chosen to explain at a slightly greaterlength than others.Example 1.1Below: Only the part underlined below is known bynecessity, the rest is extra elaboration or evidences:174. Ratherit is only the ruling or information mentioned at the start ofeach section that is necessary knowledge (see example 1.1above).
  14. 14. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah14Although a lot of time and effort has been spent, checkingand rechecking this book to ensure that there are no seriousmistakes in our writing, as with any big project, somemistakes are inevitable. This is the nature of human beings, that we are weak, limited and prone to forgetfulness andmistake unlike our Lord who is perfect and free from error. The prophet T said,“Every son of Adam is open to mistake and the best of those whomake mistakes are those who repent.”2In these circumstances, I am fully aware that I may havemade mistakes in this book and pray that Allah forgivesand protects me from them. I also encourage people towrite to me with help, suggestions and corrections, shouldyou find any small mistake in this book, even if it was atypo or small spelling mistake3 and I pray that Allahrewards you for your time and effort in this endeavour.By Abu Baraa’Compiler2 Sunan al-Tirmizi, Vol 4, p.6593 Please give complete details of the chapter, page and line numbers so that I canfind and make changes easily. Also, please do not be offended if I am unable tomake changes swiftly or if I omit suggested changes that I do not agree with.

We have been blessed further withthe Sunnah of the prophet T and with the Deen of truth, which carries the best guidance and solutions for all theproblems of any society in any time or place. We have been blessed with a unique Deen (al-Islam, thedivine way of life) and a rich history of scholarship, thought, debate, science and discovery that every Muslimcan be proud of. Undeniably, the immense wealth of juristicstudy and knowledge of the most meticulously verifiedauthenticity that has accumulated since the coming of theMessenger Muhammad T is overwhelming and isunmatched by any other society, nation or civilisation untiltoday.Allah ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ says,‫ﱡ‬‫ﺪ‬ُ‫ﻤ‬َ‫ﻳ‬ ُ‫ﺮ‬ْ‫ﺤ‬َ‫ﺒ‬‫ﹾ‬‫ﻟ‬‫َﺍ‬‫ﻭ‬ ٌ‫ﻡ‬‫ﹶﺎ‬‫ﻠ‬‫ﹾ‬‫ﻗ‬‫ﹶ‬‫ﺃ‬ ٍ‫ﺓ‬َ‫ﺮ‬َ‫ﺠ‬َ‫ﺷ‬ ‫ِﻦ‬‫ﻣ‬ ‫ﹺ‬‫ﺽ‬ْ‫ﺭ‬‫ﹶ‬‫ﺄ‬‫ﹾ‬‫ﻟ‬‫ﺍ‬ ‫ِﻲ‬‫ﻓ‬ ‫َﺎ‬‫ﻤ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻧ‬‫ﹶ‬‫ﺃ‬ ْ‫ﻮ‬‫ﹶ‬‫ﻟ‬َ‫ﻭ‬ِ‫ﻩ‬ِ‫ﺪ‬ْ‫ﻌ‬َ‫ﺑ‬ ‫ِﻦ‬‫ﻣ‬ ُ‫ﻩ‬ٌ‫ﻢ‬‫ِﻴ‬‫ﻜ‬َ‫ﺣ‬ ٌ‫ﺰ‬‫ﹺﻳ‬‫ﺰ‬َ‫ﻋ‬ َ‫ﻪ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻠ‬‫ﺍﻟ‬ ‫ﱠ‬‫ﻥ‬‫ﹺ‬‫ﺇ‬ ِ‫ﻪ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻠ‬‫ﺍﻟ‬ ُ‫ﺕ‬‫َﺎ‬‫ﻤ‬ِ‫ﻠ‬‫ﹶ‬‫ﻛ‬ ْ‫ﺕ‬َ‫ﺪ‬ِ‫ﻔ‬َ‫ﻧ‬ ‫ﱠﺎ‬‫ﻣ‬ ‫ﹴ‬‫ﺮ‬ُ‫ﺤ‬ْ‫ﺑ‬‫ﹶ‬‫ﺃ‬ ‫ﹸ‬‫ﺔ‬َ‫ﻌ‬ْ‫ﺒ‬َ‫ﺳ‬4 al-Qur’an, Surah Muhammad, 47:19
  17. 17. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah17“And if all the trees on earth were pens, and the sea [were] ink, with seven [morel seas yet added to it, the words of Allah wouldnot be exhausted: for, verily, Allah is almighty, wise.”5Our knowledge compared to the unfathomable knowledgeof Allah ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ is barely worth mentioning. He ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ alone is Al‘Aleem (the All-Knowing). None other besides Him ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬can achieve complete knowledge. In fact, it is quiteimpossible for any person to have knowledge equal to theprophets and messengers of Allah ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ or indeed thecompanions of those prophets, who accompanied andstudied from the best teachers chosen for them by Allah ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬.Indeed, it is within this context that we can understand ourposition today and the position of the lay Muslim, who, forgreater reason, can never hope to be knowledgeable onevery topic of Islam. However, this lay person is stillobliged to study Islam and seek certain knowledge that isnecessary for him to live his life according to Islam withoutbecoming a sinner or disbeliever. The prophet T said,“Seeking knowledge is compulsory upon every Muslim.”6This obligation is not and cannot be to learn every singlematter as we have already explained that that is impossibleexcept for Allah and Allah ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ says,‫ﹶ‬‫ﻻ‬ُ‫ﻒ‬‫ﱢ‬‫ﻠ‬‫ﹶ‬‫ﻜ‬ُ‫ﻳ‬‫َﺎ‬‫ﻬ‬َ‫ﻌ‬ْ‫ﺳ‬ُ‫ﻭ‬ ‫ﱠ‬‫ﻻ‬‫ﹺ‬‫ﺇ‬ ‫ًﺎ‬‫ﺴ‬‫ﹾ‬‫ﻔ‬َ‫ﻧ‬ ُ‫ﻪ‬‫ﹼ‬‫ﻠ‬‫ﺍﻟ‬“Allah does not burden a soul beyond its scope of capability…”75 Al-Qur’an, Surah Luqmaan, 31:276 Saheeh al-Bukhari, Saheeh al-Muslim and Sunan ibn Majah7 al-Qur’an, Surah al-Baqarah, 2: 286
  18. 18. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah18Rather this Hadith is concerning an obligation to learnspecific knowledge about particular topics. It is not anobligation to study about mathematics, science, medicine, agriculture or any other worldly affair. Although thesesubjects are very beneficial and even essential to theMuslim community and studying them is not onlypermissible but encouraged, it is not a sin however toneglect these types of study or even for a person to go hisentire life without to study them, even the study of everydetailed aspect of Islam is not obliged. It is, however, an obligation to seek and learn about thoseaspects of Islam that is required to be a Muslim and for theday-to-day life of a Muslim. These matters are what everyMuslim is obliged to know from his/her Deen by necessity(al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah); And Imam Sufyanal-Thawree said,“It is the knowledge for which no person has any excuse for notknowing.”Imam al-Shafi’i (rh) explained about this Hadith that theknowledge every Muslim is obliged to seek. is thenecessary knowledge. He also said,
  19. 19. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah19“Someone asked me: ‘What is Ilm (knowledge) and how muchmust men know of it?’ al-Shafi’i replied ‘Ilm is two kinds: one isgeneral and no sane, mature person can be ignorant of it.’ Heasked, ‘What is an example of this?’ al-Shafi’i replied, ’forexample, that the five daily prayers are [compulsory], that peoplemust fast the month of ramadaan, to make pilgrimage to thesacred house if they are able to and to pay the Zakat, and thatAllah has prohibited usury, adultery, murder, theft, alcohol (i.e.all intoxicants) and everything of that sort which He ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ hasobliged men to comprehend, to perform, to pay from their wealthand to abstain from. This kind of knowledge is found textually inthe Book of Allah and is transmitted generally among the peopleof Islam from previous generations to later generationsattributing it to the prophet T while nobody ever questioned itsattribution [to the Messenger of Allah] or the obligation uponthem to abide by it. It is the kind of knowledge that there is nopossibility of error in its narration or interpretation. It is notpermissible to question it…8”9This includes the basic foundations of our belief, creed, worship and the day-to-day rules of transactions withpeople, personal grooming and hygiene, social and sexualrelationships, trade and rules of speech and even theminimum knowledge of the Arabic language that isrequired to fulfil the obligatory ritual acts.8 The other type was elaborated in a very long explanation as being obscureknowledge that only scholars are usually aware of or that which is derived throughIjtihaad.9 Kitab al-Risaalah for Imam Muhammad ibn Idrees al-Shafi’i
  20. 20. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah20They are matters that are based on clear-cut, authentic, explicit and agreed upon evidences and transcend allschools of thoughts, races and all other legitimate orillegitimate divisions in the Muslim Ummah. They are notsubject to change, renovation or open to Ijtihaad (Jurisisticexertion) and have never been contradicted by any Muslimscholars in the salaf (first three generation of Muslims) oreven in later times. However, despite being necessary and an obligation tostudy from childhood, knowledge of these basic mattershas become scarce throughout the Muslim world andparticularly among Muslims that have grown up in westerncountries. It is with this urgent crisis in mind, that this book has beenwritten. This book is intended to be a comprehensive (asmuch as is possible) compilation of all matters that areagreed upon to be known from Islam by necessity. The following is a list of what the scholars of ‘Ahl Sunnahwal-Jama’ah’10 agree to be known from the Deen11 bynecessity. They are points the Qur’an and the Sunnah havementioned in definite terms with clear-cut meanings, andthere is no disagreement amongst the Scholars of the Salafor the Khalaf (i.e. all generations after the first threegenerations) regarding these points.10 It is recorded in Tafseer al-Tabari [for Imam Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari(d. 310 AH)] and Ibn Katheer [for Imam Abu al-Fida, Imad Ad-Din Ismail bin Umarbin Katheer al-Qurashi al-Busrawi (d. 774 AH)] that Abdullah ibn Abbas saidregarding the verse of Surah ale-Imraan, 3: 106 “On the Day of Judgment, some peoplesfaces will be bright, and others will be dark” that “Those whose faces will be bright will beAhl us-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah, and those whose faces will be dark will be Ahl al-Bid’ah wal-Firqah.” Ahl Sunnah Wal-Jama’ah is a sect, it is the saved sect which the prophet Tmentioned in the Hadith and it is specifically the prophet T and his companionsand the way in which they believed in their Aqeedah (belief) and all other aspects ofthe Deen (religion). It is narrated by Abdullah ibn Amru and recorded in al-
  21. 21. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah21C H A P T E R 1al-Imaan & al-Tawheed(Faith & Monotheism)First and foremost, every Muslim upon embracing Islam12must understand the fact that there is none worthy ofworship besides Allah and that Muhammad T is HisMessenger. Allah ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ says,Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 2565, that the prophet T said, my Ummah will divide into 73sects, all of them will be in the hellfire, and one of them will be in paradise.” We asked“Which one is saved?” The Prophet T said, “The one that is with me and my Companions.”see the book Ahl al-Sunnah Wal-Jama’ah: their beliefs and qualities by Sheikh Abu Bilalfor more details.11 The Deen is the way of life as defined by Abdullah ibn Abbas, “(It is) what youbelieve in (i.e. al-Tawheed), live by (i.e. al-Shari’ah) and die for (i.e. Da’wah and Jihad).”[Narrated in Sharh al-mu’jam al-kabeer for Imam al-Tabaraani and on the Tafseer ofQurtubi] And Allah ‫ﻭﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ ‫ﺳﺒﺤﺎﻧﻪ‬ says, “This day I have perfected your Deen and completedmy favour upon you and chosen for you al-Islam as your Deen,” [al-Qur’an, Surah al-Maa’idah, 5: 3] and He ‫ﻭﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ ‫ﺳﺒﺤﺎﻧﻪ‬ says, “And whosoever seeks a Deen other than Islam,it will never be accepted and in the hereafter they will be losers.”[al-Qur’an, Surah ale-Imraan, 3: 85]12 al-Islam, is to submit fully and exclusively to Allah ‫ﻭﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ ‫ﺳﺒﺤﺎﻧﻪ‬ and to practise withfull obedience and to have complete disavowal and disassociation from ash-Shirk(ascribing partners to Allah) and its people. It is the religion of over 1.5 billionMuslims all over the world and is the ruling system that lead and ruled much ofthe world for 1302 years from the time of the messenger of Allah, Muhammad ‫ﺻﻠﻰ‬

Verily, it isthe heart”6865 sing. al-Taghoot (pl. It is obligatory and the first pillar of al-Tawheed is to reject and distanceourselves from him and all other Tawagheet. See Kitabul Imaan or Mukhtasar al-Tawheed by Sheikh Abu Bilal for more details.66 al-Qur’an, Surah al-Baqarah, 2: 25667 Narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib in Saheeh al-Bukhari68 Saheeh al-Bukhari
  44. 44. al-Ma’loom min al-Deen bil-Dharoorah44Clearly, maintaining the purity and correct deeds of theheart is essential for every believer wishing to be safe fromsin and disbelief. This is why, after the tenets and articles offaith that we have mentioned in the last chapter, it ispertinent to speak next about the other acts of worshipperformed by the heart.15. al-IhsaanYou must worship Allah as if you see him and that is thebest form of worship. In the famous Hadith narrated byOmar ibn Khattab Z about Jibreel who came in the form ofa man who came to the Messenger asked him about theDeen, when asked, “… Then tell me about Ihsan.” TheProphet T said,“It is to worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do notsee Him, then (knowing that) truly He sees you.”69And Allah ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬ says,ٌ‫ﻦ‬ِ‫ﺴ‬ْ‫ﺤ‬ُ‫ﻣ‬ َ‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻫ‬َ‫ﻭ‬ ‫ﷲ‬ ُ‫ﻪ‬َ‫ﻬ‬ْ‫ﺟ‬َ‫ﻭ‬ َ‫ﻢ‬‫ﹶ‬‫ﻠ‬ْ‫ﺳ‬‫ﹶ‬‫ﺃ‬ ْ‫ﻦ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻤ‬‫ﱢ‬‫ﻣ‬ ‫ًﺎ‬‫ﻨ‬‫ِﻳ‬‫ﺩ‬ ُ‫ﻦ‬َ‫ﺴ‬ْ‫ﺣ‬‫ﹶ‬‫ﺃ‬ ْ‫ﻦ‬َ‫ﻣ‬َ‫ﻭ‬“Who is better in his Deen than the one who worships Allah ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬exclusively (sincerely for his sake) and he is a Muhsin?”7016. al-IkhlaasYou must be sincere for Allahs sake.
