    7. 7. Innovation and Collaboration – principles that guide us• "If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas." - George Bernard Shaw• "It is the long history of humankind those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed." - Charles Darwin Confidential © 2012 Kineo. 10. 10. Some of the challenges• RFP’s weighted toward proprietary software outcome  Proprietary software can recoup with large licensing fees  More uncertain for an open source vendor, value is transparent to services supplied• Recommendations for Re-Framing the Procurement Process  Research the models, RFI as opposed to RFP  Split the process – action research with pilots  Pay for pilots rather than expecting it as pre-sales in the services based open source model  Understand total cost of ownership – e.g. scaling up, exit costs with proprietary Confidential © 2012 Kineo. 11. 11. Looking ahead Confidential © 2012 Kineo. All rights reserved.
    12. 12. Totara Cloud • Global cloud hosting • Initially focused on organisations with less than 5,000 users • Standardised, low cost generic solution

    18. 18. Open Badges project – working with Mozilla
    19. 19. What’s new? Happens now, right? Confidential © 2012 Kineo. All rights reserved.
    20. 20. Open Badges - Why?• An indicator of accomplishment, skill or quality• Networked = portability, if desired.• Learners have multiple pathways to build their skills, experiences and gain competencies• Can be more micro than educational achievement tends to be Confidential © 2012 Kineo. All rights reserved.
    21. 21. • Capture the learning pathway• Badges can be more granular, aligned to a specific achievement• Portable, alternative certification model(s) Confidential © 2012 Kineo. All rights reserved.
    22. 22. • Visual recognition of achievement, and metadata links to validation• Perceived value will differ based on the “use case”, i.e. the context or community;  Vocational education  Professional bodies  Peer to peer recognition  Corporate, workplace learning• Infrastructure to support diversity of contexts with better robustness and connection to Issuer. Confidential © 2012 Kineo. All rights reserved.
    23. 23. Metadata• Who was the Issuer?• Issue date• Brief description of how badge was earned• URIs to artefacts, testimonials etc.• Web service for verification.  “Did the Issuer issue the badge?”  “Is it still valid?” Confidential © 2012 Kineo. All rights reserved.
    24. 24. OBI Risks and Benefits• Infrastructure for alternative credentialing  Modern society demands new and dynamic skills and literacies. Requires innovation and flexibility in learning environments• Anyone can issue accreditations about anything? Won’t this lead to badge “bling” and therefore badges become meaningless?  Badges need credibility but it’s within context Confidential © 2012 Kineo. All rights reserved.
    25. 25. More than a badge• More than a small button with metadata – OBI provides an open infrastructure that will underpin presentation of work – e.g. CPD certification• A badge / Totara Social combination enables you to click through to more detailed levels of evidence and explanation—documents, assessment results, testimonials, awards won, video, and more. i.e. verifiable evidence.
    26. 26. Confidential © 2012 Kineo. All rights reserved.
    27. 27. Leverage Totara Activity and/or course completion to issue Badges –enables very flexible criteria E.g. viewing a web page or a learner self-marking an item as complete. Starting online discussions or replying to a specific forum post. At the more formal level, activity completion, and therefore the generation of a badge, may be set by achieving a certain score. Confidential © 2012 Kineo. All rights reserved.
    28. 28. Technical Overview1. Issue smart PNGs instead of dumb jpeg or PDF certificates.2. Web service approach (using Moodle/Totara’s web services API) will enable any displayer to verify badges issued by a specific Totara site.3. Create a new block for Totara that users will be able to place badges into their profile.4. Use the Portfolio API to push badges to Totara Social, Mahara, etc.5. Totara Social blocks will display either a single badge or a gallery of badges. PNG files that have badge metadata will be identified as badges (and available to be selected by the new block).6.
