  • What's Your Diagnosis #1

    1. 1. WHAT’S YOUR DIAGNOSIS? #1
    2. 2. WHAT IS A QUID?A quid is a piece of chewingtobacco. The term “quidding” is derivedfrom the expression “chew yourquid or cud.”While horses don’t chewtobacco, they can make quidsout of hay if their teeth are inbad condition.
    3. 3. WHY DO HORSES MAKEQUIDS?With sharp or missing teeth, horsesare unable to adequately chew hayinto small enough fibers to swallow. The hay then rolls around in theirmouth as the horse tries to break itdown. The horse will use his tongue to packthe quid against the sharp teeth toprotect his cheeks.Eventually the hay clump falls outwhen the horse puts his head down totake another bite.
    4. 4. DENTAL EXAMINATIONIf you find quids in your horse’s stall, it is time tohave a veterinarian evaluate your horse’s mouth.
