Bendee Downs Background <ul><li>Bendee Downs was a cattle andsheep shearing station for the past hundred years </li></ul><ul><li>KTAOI (Kooma Traditinional Owners Organisation Inc) </li></ul><ul><li>In 2007 KTOAI listed quarter of the property 24 000ha as the Dhandan Duringala Nature Refuge. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Current Internet at Bendee Downs <ul><li>Only one computer connected to the internet </li></ul><ul><li>Currently reliant on 5kb/s bandwidth </li></ul><ul><li>No Internet site or blog got community members to access </li></ul>
  4. 4. EWB challenge Goals <ul><li>Turn Bendee Downs into a regional hub for education. </li></ul><ul><li>Have ICT facilities to accommodate 50-100 visitors per week </li></ul>
  5. 5. Our Goals <ul><li>Propose a solution for upgrading the internet facilities at Bendee Downs </li></ul><ul><li>Provide educational software for the Bendee Downs site </li></ul><ul><li>Increase the quality of education for the indigenous students of the Kooma Nation </li></ul>
  6. 6. Indigenous Education <ul><li>Only 38% of indigenous students reach senior years at high school </li></ul><ul><li>This compared to the 79% of non indigenous students. </li></ul>

The Solution <ul><li>Considered building a web site around a slogan using conventional coding methods e.g HTML. </li></ul><ul><li>Required a lot of previous knowledge and not easily accessible to the public modification </li></ul><ul><li>Chose PB works wiki for education and an optional wiki for community use. </li></ul><ul><li>Investigated Broad Band over Power lines </li></ul>

Hosting <ul><li>Hosting locally puts strain on the internet connection where hosting externally doesn’t </li></ul><ul><li>Looked at green hosting company’s ‘FatCow’, ’Super Green Hosting’. </li></ul><ul><li>Chose Super Green because of it’s 24/7 service and price point. </li></ul><ul><li>Super Green uses dell servers which produce 20% less Co2 emissions than conventional servers </li></ul><ul><li>Super Green has green projects such a planting trees to offset the rest of the Co2 </li></ul><ul><li>$2.95 US a month </li></ul>

PBWorks <ul><li>Education wiki </li></ul><ul><li>Three editions classroom, library, campus </li></ul><ul><li>Includes templates for assignment, syllabus. </li></ul><ul><li>Easy to add and edit accounts </li></ul><ul><li>Easy to create and edit pages </li></ul><ul><li>Offers plugins for videos, images, power points etc </li></ul><ul><li>Tutorials publically available </li></ul><ul><li>Premium available for $99 US/year other wise basic is free. </li></ul>

BPL (Broad band over power lines) <ul><li>Don’t need to be close to a locally service exchange </li></ul><ul><li>Works over power grid minimal infrastructure </li></ul><ul><li>Power models cheap to install $114.20 </li></ul><ul><li>Unfortunately cost for BPL modulator is not clear. </li></ul>
