  2. 2. The Beginning  “Drive” originated from father  1934 (age 28) borrowed $15 from wife  Sold ice cream out of back of truck  Broke down, so sold from parking lot of pottery store  Sold out in 2 days

The “Father of Franchising”  1920’s-Created (possibly) the first soft ice cream machine  At first machines were sold to owners-didn’t understand them  Ended up “educating” them and charging royalty on sales (under the Carvel name)  “Franchising” was extremely new during this time period  Success! 25 stores by 1950’s!
  4. 4. Marketing  Was the “actor” for his own commercials  Were never edited for flaws  Wanted to relate to the “common man”  Using the chief exec in ads was revolutionary  Assured the brand’s loyal following
  5. 5. The Carvel Foundation  Created in 1977  Annual budget of $1.5 million  $800,000 in grants  Past recipients: St. Joseph’s in Yonkers, St. St. Agnes Hospital in White Plains, NY Agnes Hospital (to right)
  6. 6. Today  Over 865 franchise stores  Plans to open more domestically, as well as abroad  In 1984 alone, drew in over $300 million in sales
