  2. 2. Who was Sophocles?is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whoseplays have survived.Sophocles wrote 123 plays during the course ofhis life, but only seven have survived in acomplete form: Ajax, Antigone, The Women ofTrachis, Oedipus the King, Electra, Philoctetesand Oedipus at Colonus.[
  3. 3. His Plays• Sophocles had the most plays of any playwright in the dramatic competitions of the city-state of Athens. Most of them took place during the religious festivals.• The most famous tragedies of Sophocles feature, Oedipus and Antigone: they are generally known as the Theban Plays.

His Influences on other Playwrites• Every major dramatist—from Seneca to William Shakespeare, from Jean-Baptiste Molière to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe—has been influenced in some degree by Sophocles conception of tragedy.• For example, the process of Catharsis, in Shakespearean plays was adapted from Greek plays.
