WHAT IS SKIN CANCER? Skin cancer is the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells of the skin. There are 3 types of skin cancer: Basal Skin Carcinoma Squamous Skin Carinoma Melanoma • (National Cancer Institute, 2011)
SKIN CANCER IN IRELAND Between 2007 and 2009 there were 8,053 cases of skin cancer. 720 of these cases were Melanoma (National Cancer Registry, 2011) This makes Skin Cancer IRELANDS MOST COMMON CANCER More common in men (30%) than women(29%) (National Cancer Registry, 2011). This maybe due to more men than women working and playing sports outdoors.
