The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was conceived in its earliest form toward the end of the 19th century in response to a book published by Swiss national Henry Dunant. Dunant’s observations of neglected, wounded soldiers led to the adoption of the Geneva Convention, which stipulated protection of medics and injured persons during wartime. This then produced a number of entities within each country dedicated to providing these protective and medical services, which eventually adopted the Red Cross name.
