  1. 1. Hans Augusto Rey and Margaret Rey: The Creators of Curious George
  2. 2. Early Years <ul><li>Hans Rey was born on September 16, 1898 in Germany. He grew up near the zoo and went there often as a child. </li></ul><ul><li>Margarete Waldstein was born on May 16, 1906. </li></ul><ul><li>In the 1930s Germany was a difficult place to live so both Hans and Margarete’s family’s moved to Brazil. This is where they met and married. </li></ul><ul><li>Afterwards the Reys moved to Paris. Again, because of World War II, they had to leave the city. They escaped on their bikes and rode all the way to Spain (for four days!) with only 2 suitcases. </li></ul><ul><li>After they reached Spain, they took a boat to New York City. </li></ul>

  4. 4. Early Books <ul><li>While they were living in Paris the Rey’s published their first book. It was called Cecily and the Nine Monkeys and one of the characters in the book was a little monkey named George. The book was a success and afterwards the Rey’s planned to start a new book featuring the funny monkey. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Illustrations <ul><li>In the Curious George books, Hans Augusto Rey was responsible for all of the illustrations. He generally used watercolor paints to make them. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Honors <ul><li>In the 60 years since their dates of publication, the Curious George books have been published in many world languages . So far more than 25,000,000 copies have been sold of the Curious George books. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Last Years <ul><li>Though both Hans and Margarete Rey have Curious George lives on in the Curious George Foundation. Established in 1989, this foundation funds programs for children that share Curious George’s special such as a love of exploring . The organization also supports programs for animals. Whenever fans buy Curious George books or movies, they can help too. </li></ul>
