Media Advanced Portfolio Evaluation

 1. 1. Media Advanced Portfolio Evaluation By Kevin Mok
 2. 2. The Four Questions

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

How effective is the combination of your media product and ancillary texts?

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

 3. 3. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
 4. 4.

My Music Video does use typical conventions of real Music Videos.

Before I started the construction of my Music Video, the one of our first planning research task was to look at existing music videos. I chosen four different music videos and analysed them, they were Cheryl Cole- Fight For This Love, Leona Lewis- Run, Taylor Swift – Teardrops on my Guitar and Alesha Dixon – The Boys Does Nothing. After I completed this research task, I found out many different typical conventions and ideas, which I used in my music video.

 5. 5. Artist in the Music Video

I have the artist in the music video. This convention is one of the most popular one for all existing music videos. All the artists appeared in their own video when I completed the textual analysis of the music videos. This convention inspired me when I looked at existing music videos and also my Target Audience’s questionnaire result. I created a questionnaire about music video and asked a question “Do you prefer the artist to be in the music video?” 90% of my target audience answered “Yes” they do prefer the artist in the music video.

 6. 6. Lip Syncing

Lip syncing is another convention I used that follows existing music video. I got told not to use this method because it is difficult to pull off and can look very bad if I do not do it properly. However, I think I pulled the lip syncing off very well in my Music Video. I thought it was very necessary to use lip syncing in my music video because it is a love song and the artist is expressing her feelings. In my opinion without lip syncing, my music video could get mistaken by a short film.

 7. 7. Mise En Scene

Mise en Scene is another convention I used in my music video which was inspired by real existing Music Videos. My Storyline in my music video is very important and significant to the song. It was crucial to use the right location, props and costumes because if my music video does not look realistic, people will not enjoy watching it and people would not find it believable.

 8. 8. Mise en Scene I have used in My Music Video

Café Scene

- Waiter with an apron

- Equipment

- Cup

- Tray

- Location set in a real Cafe

Wedding Photos Scene - Wedding Dress - White Viel - White Gloves - White Scarf - Suit - Location set outside a church
 9. 9. Mise en Scene I have used in My Music Video Pregnant Scene - Making the girl Look Pregnant - Home Atmosphere - Location set in a house Proposal - Ring - Red Roses - Location set outside town
 10. 10. Camera Shots

Another convention I used which is in existing media products are a range of shots and angles. Range of shots would make my music video more interesting and keeps the audience’s attention. I have used Close ups, point of views, tilt shots, over the shoulder shot. Certain shots help draw attention to certain things.

 11. 11. 2. How Effective Is The Combination of your Main Product and Ancillary Tasks?
 12. 12. How Effective Is The Combination of your Main Product and Ancillary Tasks?

Music Digipak

Does it fulfil its Purpose?

Would it be appropriate for your Target Audience?

How does it combine with the music video?

How does it combine with the music magazine advertisement?

Music Magazine Advertisement

Does it fulfil its purpose?

Would it be appropriate for your Target audience?

How does it combine with the Digipak?

What would you change?
 13. 13. Music Digipak
 14. 14. Music Digipak

Does it fulfil its purpose?

My Alesha Dixon digipak uses the typical conventions of existing Digipaks. Before I created this, I analysed many different digipaks from the same genre of the song. I found out that all of the digipak in this pop ballad genre includes the artist on the front cover, artist’s name which is bigger than the title of the album, track list and spine. I have included all the essential information on the album digipak I have created and I generally think my digipak fulfils its purpose.

 15. 15. Music Digipak

Would it be appropriate for your target audience?

I think my digipak is appropriate for my target audience because I aim my target audience at the young generation with the age of 20 and below. It is specifically aimed at young females. I have made my album cover digipak very glamorous and I used a female model to replicate the Alesha Dixon role. When young female sees Alesha Dixon on her covers, they would like to use her as an idol and copy what she wears and how she looks, such as hair style, make up. On the other hand I think my digipak would attract young females due to the glamorous side of the female. Overall I think my digipak is appropriate for my target audience.

 16. 16. Music Digipak

How does it combine with the music video?

My music video is based on the artist and the story line uses the artist as the main star. My digipak combines well with my music video because the artist features on the album cover and is the main object on the picture. She has model for the front and back cover. However one thing that does not reflect the music video is that the digipak does not look romantic, apart from the girl model being glamorous.

 17. 17. Music Digipak

How does it combine with the Music Magazine Advert?

My Digipak combines well with my Music Magazine Advertisement because both product was shot in the same location, which indicates that a same thing has being carried out in both products. This would help sales of the album because people may remember their music advert and not the face of the album. Using the same theme would mean increase people’s memory of the album in shops.

 18. 18. Music Magazine Advertisement
 19. 19. Music Magazine Advertisement

Does it fulfil it’s purpose?

I think my music magazine advert does fulfil its purpose because it consist of all the important features which includes the artist’s name, album name, when the album is released and the artist’s website. A music magazine is to promote the artist and sell their new album. I think I have done that successfully with my music magazine advertisement. I analysed existing music magazine advertisement from different music magazines to find out what the important features were on an advert.

 20. 20. Music Magazine Advertisement

Would it be appropriate for your target audience?

Similar with the digipak, my music magazine advertisement is aimed at the young generation. My music magazine has a female on it to model as Alesha Dixon. When my target audience sees this, they would want to copy what Alesha Dixon is wearing and how she would look. This would also persuade them to buy the album. Overall I think my Music Magazine Advertisement is appropriate for my target audience as it is promoting the artist and the album.

 21. 21. Music Magazine Advertisement

How does it combine with your Music Digipak?

I think my Music Magazine Advertisement combines well with the Music Digipak because they bother has the same theme and location used.

 22. 22. What Would you Change?

Overall, I am happy with the outcome of my ancillary tasks. I really enjoyed creating my music magazine advertisement and my music digipak. I am proud of what I have created and the way they look. I think they look realistic and professionally done. The only thing I would change would be to alter the theme and make both products more romantic to match the song of my music video. “To Love Again”

 23. 23. 3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Questionnaire

Questionnaire Results

Comments

Improvements

Average Score out of 10

My Judgment

Questionnaire Sample

 24. 24. Questionnaire Sample
 25. 25. Questionnaire

I identified my target audience which was from the age of 12 – 20. I created a questionnaire which consisted of 8 Quantitative questions and 3 Qualitative questions.

 26. 26. Gender and Age

36 people completed the Questionnaire

18 males

18 Females

All the people were from the age between 13 – 18+

 27. 27. Questionnaire Results

Did you enjoy the Music Video?

My results shows that 32 people enjoyed my Music Video and only 4 people did not enjoy the music video.

89% of my audience who completed my questionnaire enjoyed my music video and only 11% did not enjoy it.

This shows my Music Video was a success.

 28. 28. Questionnaire Results

How entertaining did you find the Music Video?

My Results shows that 12 people found my music very entertaining, 22 people found it entertaining enough and 2 people found it not very entertaining.

33% of my audience who completed my questionnaire found my music video very entertaining, 61% found it Entertaining Enough and 6% did not find my music video very entertaining.

I am very satisfied with the results because only 6% of my target audience did not find my Music Video Entertaining and the majority my target audience found my music video entertaining. Not all the audience was pleased with the same thing, they all had different opinions.

 29. 29. Questionnaire Results

Did you understand the storyline of the music video?

My Results shows that 30 people answered Yes, 6 people answered parts of it and no one answered “No”.

83% of my audience who completed my questionnaire understands the storyline of my music video, 17% of my audience only understand parts of the music video, no one was confused or did not understand any of the storyline.

My results shows that my audience had a good knowledge of what was happening in the music video, which indicates I have express the storyline well and kept a story throughout the music video.

 30. 30. Questionnaire Results

Did you find the Music Video…?

(funny or emotional or romantic)

My Results shows that 10 people answered Funny, 4 people answered emotional and 22 people answered romantic.

28% of my audience who completed the questionnaire found my music video funny, 11% of my audience found it emotional and 61% found my music video Romantic.

I am very pleased with the outcome of the results because a majority of my audience found my music video romantic, which was what I was trying to achieve due to the song being romantic and about Love. I think I have implemented the romantic theme within the music video very well.

 31. 31. Questionnaire Results

Could You See This Music Video On T.V?

My Results shows that 18 people answered Yes and 18 people answered No.

50% of my audiences who completed the questionnaire thinks my music video could be shown on Television and the other 50% thinks my music video cannot be shown on television.

I am satisfied with the results of this question because half of the people thinks my music video is good enough to be on a music channel on television, however I know my music video is not perfect, which could be the reason why the results is equal.

 32. 32. Questionnaire Results

Do you think the location, props and costume are appropriate for the music video?

The results shows that 31 people answered Yes and 5 people answered No.

86% of my audience who completed the questionnaire thought the location, props and costume was appropriate for the music video and only 14% thought it was not appropriate.

I am overly pleased with this result because it took me a quite a long time to plan my location, ask for permission for filming and consider the right location for my storyline. It also took a lot of time looking at props and costumes which fitted the actors and actresses in my music video and took me time to purchase the items such as the fake phone, roses, weddings items, ring and waiter’s apron.

 33. 33. Comments

Towards the end of my questionnaire I asked three questions,

They were :

What was your “favourite” part of the Music Video?

What was your “least favourite” part of the Music Video?

If you had to do the video again, how would you improve it?

These three questions allows the audience give there own opinion.

 34. 34. Comments

What was your favourite part of the Music Video?

Comments…

“ when boy and the girl were walking in the woods looking romantic”

“ the waited dropping the pen and paper, grabbing the flowers and ring matching to the music”

“ storyline is kept throughout the music video”

“ wedding and proposal photo ending”

“ pregnant scene”

“ location of the music video”

 35. 35. Comments

What was your “least favourite” part of the Music Video?

Comments…

“ the phone call scene at the beginning”

“ repeated wood scene”

“ special effects used in the woods”

“ particular scene where a random person comes down the street and takes a photo”

“ location used”

“ proposal scene”

 36. 36. IMPROVEMENTS

If you had to do the video again, how would you improve it?

Comments…

“ add a kiss scene”

“ make the video more dramatic”

“ less cheesy”

“ improve on pregnant scene”

“ better locations”

“ have the video more in colour”

“ change the future life scene at the end where there is wedding photos and pregnant scene”

“ less effects”

 37. 37. Average Score out of 10

At the end of my questionnaire I got my audience to score my music video out of 10.

I added all the scores up and divided it up by the number of people who completed the questionnaires.

My average score I received from my target audience was 7.4 out of 10.

 38. 38. My Judgment

After looking back at the comments I received from my target audience’s questionnaire, I agree with some of the things they have commented about my music video, however I also disagree with some of the comments. I have encountered all the improvements I received from my audience who completed the questionnaire. From my audience feedback, I have learnt that it is best to consider what video effects to use before placing a random effect in the my sequence. I have also learnt that to create a scene such as replicating a girl being pregnant needs more thought and planning because I received many comments that the pregnant scene did not look realistic. I was quite surprise that some viewers would like to have a scene which involves a kiss however others views placed an improvement of making the music video less cheesy.

The response I got for my music video from my questionnaire, shows that my product was quite a success. I had quite a lot of positive comments from the majority of my audience.

 39. 39. 4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? I used a variety of technologies in my construction and research, planning and evaluation stages.
 40. 40. Final Cut Express

This was the programme I used to edit my music video together.

 41. 41. Using Final Cut Express

I found Final Cut Express quite easy to use. During this course I have gained more knowledge and experience in using the program.

Final Cut enabled me to:

Import Video clips, Sound Effects/Music, Pictures

Apply different video effects and transitions

Cut video footage

Overlay pictures, video and music together

Soft Focus Effect Black And White Effect Cross Dissolve Transition (Pictures from Music Video)
 42. 42. Blogger

I have used this media online technology to create a blog which enables me to upload text, pictures and videos to show the progress of my Advanced Portfolio from the research and planning to the construction stages.

 43. 43. Using Blogger

Text

Blogger allows me to use different font style, colour and sizes for the text. I haven’t really took this advantage because I did not think it was necessary for the changes. I have kept to the same font colour, style and size.

Picture and Video

Blogger allowed me to upload pictures and videos onto my blog to show evidences of my work and research. The program has different options such as the size of the photo or video, and the layout whether you want picture or video on the left, right or centre.

 44. 44. Blogger

I found Blogger very easy to use. The navigation on it was very simple. When you want to see a particular post, all you have to do is click on the drop down menu and find the posting you want. The only disadvantage on the Blogger is once you have blogged a post, you can not alter the order you have posted them.

(Pictures from Blog)
 45. 45. I-Movies

This year we got introduce to new cameras for filming. However we could not transfer the footage we collect from the video cameras straight into Final Cut Express so We had to use a programme called I-movies.

 46. 46. Using I-movies

I was given two different methods to do this.

First method I got told to use was import all the footage into i-movies and then export it to an FCP XML file.

Second method I got told to use was import all the footage into i-movies and then export as an Quicktime movie.

 47. 47. Live Type

Live type was the program I used to create the title of the song and artist name which appears at the beginning and the end of my music video. Live type allowed me to animate text and import it as a file into Final Cut Express. The program has many different effects and motion I could use. However I decided to keep the animation simple as the title are not really important on my music video.

(Pictures from Music Video)
 48. 48. Pages

Pages was the program I used to create my music digipak and music magazine advertisement.

Pages enabled me to

Add text using different font colour, style and size.

Rotate Text

Upload pictures from my digital camera

Zoom in and out of pictures

Rotate Pictures

Add effects on images

Overlay pictures

 49. 49. You Tube

This video sharing website enabled me to look at other music videos to give me inspiration and ideas of what I could of done my music video. I also used this website to help me complete one of my research and planning task which was the textual analysis of a music video.

(Picture from Blog)
 50. 50. Still Camera Photos

I used still camera photos during the planning stage and also the construction of the production and ancillary tasks.

I used still photos in:

Location Planning

Showing what Costumes I am using

Showing what Props I am using

Ending of my Music Video (Wedding Photos)

Music Digipak

Music Magazine Advertisement

(Picture from Music Video) (Picture from Blog)
