  1. 1. www.trcsolutions.com Solid Waste Reduction/Recycling Programs MECC May 13, 2016
  2. 2. 2  How do we move forward to reduce the amount of waste that industries currently send to landfills or other disposal facilities and eventually achieve the goal of being Zero Landfill companies, without dramatically increasing their operating costs? Solid Waste Reduction Program
  3. 3. 3 ZERO Waste, Really? Its a lot to get your head around
  4. 4. 4  Waste is produced and sent to landfill from which facilities?  Is single stream sorting an option in those areas?  What other wastes could be recycled or reused?  What barriers (internal and external) to recycling more wastes need to be identified and overcome?  Would a waste audit, reuse market survey, processing capabilities, change management and employee training increase recycling? Waste Audit Program
  5. 5. 5  Industrial Waste Water Treatment Sludge – Analyze sludge to check for chemical content and BTUs – Could it be reused at cement or lime plant or another end user (ie. Compost, land application or backfilling)? – Capital improvements at end user site to receive such a waste material, additional permitting required? Diversion of Current Waste Materials
  6. 6. 6  General debris, food, paper, wood and plastic – Can the fuel material be sorted to be free of metal, glass and food contamination and used in a energy from waste program? – In addition to single stream recycling can a compost and energy from waste sorting program be instituted with proper change management and employee training? – This has been done at Zero Landfill companies like Hallmark, Frito-Lay, Johnson County and Boulevard Brewing already with great success.
  7. 7. 7  Submit a proposal to preform a waste audit of facilities  Develop RFQ and evaluate candidate waste processors  Identify end users for landfilled waste materials beyond current single stream program (Compost and W2E)  Identify licensed and insured low cost waste transporters  Set up trial loads and confirm final pricing  Assist clients to execute contracts to ensure reliable service and limit liability  TRC to provide ongoing program monitoring, training and results reporting with goal to be at Zero Landfill as certified by UL Labs Path Forward to Achieving Zero Landfill Status
