  2. 2. CoinCollecting For Beginners Rare coins dealer Kenneth Goldman first became fascinated with coins in the late 1950s, and in the ensuing decades has become a renowned expert in the field. He has appraised millions of dollars worth of rare coins and counseled their owners on the best way to sell them for maximum value. In addition to a broad range of professional responsibilities, which include traveling to appraise collections or to give expert testimony, he operates Kenneth Goldman, Inc., based in Needham, Massachusetts, which serves the surrounding communities as well as the Boston area.
  3. 3. CoinCollecting For Beginners Mr.Goldman is uniquely qualified to help in all aspects of appraisals, evaluations, grading and consultation in all aspects of numismatics--or rare coins. Further, anyone who has purchased coins and has questions on the valuation or grading of such coins would do well to contact Kenneth Goldman, Inc. Mr. Goldman's experience of 50 years in numismatics can be a valuable asset to people who have bought coins or who are interested in buying rare coins as a collection or for investment.
  4. 4. CoinCollecting For Beginners Collecting coins is a very enjoyable hobby and extremely easy to start. For many, it’s simply a matter of spending a few moments every evening reviewing the pocket change they accumulated during the day, and setting aside the older or more interesting examples. Some collectors have very specific goals. For instance, some collect only quarters and dimes minted in 1964 and earlier, because they have a higher silver content. Some collect only coins that were issued during the year of their birth, and others collect only coins that bear a particular mint mark, which identifies the U.S. Mint facility where a coin was minted.
  5. 5. CoinCollecting For Beginners A great many collectors were attracted to the hobby in 1999, when the U.S. Mint instituted the 50 State Quarters program. Each year, for 10 years, the Mint produced quarters with five different designs on the reverse; at the end of 2008, quarters had been produced honoring each of the 50 states. In 2009, another set of quarters featured the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. In 2010, the Mint began producing quarters featuring America’s national parks, a series of 56 coins that will be produced through 2021.
