WPAHS Freshman Honors Program

  1. 1. Wendell Phillips Academy High School Freshman Honors Program <ul><li>Wendell Phillips Freshman Honors Students visit the YouMedia Center at the Chicago Public Library, Harold Washington Library Center </li></ul><ul><li>December 17, 2010 </li></ul>
  2. 2. <ul><li>What is YouMedia? </li></ul><ul><li>YouMedia  is an innovative, 21st century teen learning space housed at the Chicago Public Library's downtown Harold Washington Library Center. YOUmedia was created to connect high school students with books, media, mentors, and institutions throughout the city of Chicago in one dynamic space designed to inspire collaboration and creativity. </li></ul><ul><li>By working in teams and individually, teens have an opportunity to engage in projects that promote critical thinking, creativity, and skill-building through the use of the multi-media equipment. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Bernadette Nowakowski, Director of Children and Young Adult Services arranged a private tour of the center for the WPAHS students. </li></ul><ul><li>YouMedia Director/Librarian, Marcus Lumpkin came in on his day off to conduct this tour. The students photographed received an overview of the center. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>The students also received a multi-media overview of YouMedia’s upcoming programs and activities. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>The students couldn’t wait to try out the interactive/digital musical games. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>Mixing and recording music was one of the activities the students enjoyed the most. </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>The students enjoyed using the desk and laptop MAC computers. </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>The final activity was participating in the Spoken Word Theatre. Students had the opportunity to recite their poetry to their peers. The books were edited and compiled by Dr. Guenther. </li></ul><ul><li>The day ended with a wonderful lunch at Panera Bread paid for by our Principal, Mr. Little. </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>Final Words…. </li></ul><ul><li>- The YouMedia staff was so impressed with the WPAHS students that they have invited them to participate in the 2011 One Book, One Chicago special program through YouMedia. </li></ul><ul><li>- 20 out of 25 students received new library cards. </li></ul><ul><li>- Many of the students stated that they would return to YouMedia over the Christmas break and throughout the year. </li></ul>
