  3. 3. Argumentative Essays Paragraph 1 : Step 1 – Introduction - get the reader’s interest How? 1. Give an example or statistic 2. Tell a story 3. Use a relevant quotation 4. Ask a pointed question Example: More than 70% of companies around the world test their products on animals before they sell it in stores. When I was in high school, we were brought to a place where they slaughtered cows. Rue McClanahan once said “cruelty is one fashion statement we can all do without”. Why should we really care whether animals suffer for us? fact story quote question TOPIC: Testing products on animals is wrong and should be stopped. AGREE OR DISAGREE
  4. 4. Argumentative Essays Paragraph 1 : Step 2 – Thesis statement A thesis statement answers the main question of the essay. Example: I, without a doubt, strongly agree that testing products should be stopped.
  5. 5. Argumentative Essays Middle Paragraphs : Body of the essay In these paragraphs, give details of your topic. Every paragraph should follow the same steps: 1. Introduce the idea 2. Give details / facts / examples to support your idea 3. Close the paragraph with a summary of your details, or a final opinion Example: Testing products on animals is really cruel . For example , in labs in the US, shampoo is tested on the eyes of rabbits to find out if the shampoos will hurt the eyes of humans who use it. In another example , ……………….. Therefore , I feel that testing products is just too cruel, and I cannot support it.
  6. 6. Argumentative Essays Last Paragraph : Conclusion The conclusion should show an end to your essay. How? 1. as a summary 2. as a final thought Example: To conclude, I strongly feel that large organisations should consider finding different ways to test their products, and leave the poor animals out of this cruel job. Or While there are some advantages to testing products on animals, I still feel that organisations can do more to consider animal welfare and what their consumers really think about it all. Perhaps they will find different ways to test their products safely, and without cruelty to anyone.
  7. 7. Argumentative Essays Exercise Write a 4 paragraph essay based on the following statement: It is ok for tabloids to publish articles and photographs of celebrities. Agree or disagree? Give examples to support your answer.
