    Slide 2- Inquiry based learning is a complicated term to define due to the many ways that it can be approached. I’ve always associated inquiry with investigating, experimenting, and letting students have the freedom to discover. The big idea is that inquiry is a process, and there should be plenty of room for flexibility in your planning.

    Slide 3- But why inquiry? Using inquiry techniques in any classroom can enhance a student’s learning experience. Providing students with real-world experiences will offer more interesting and engaging educational opportunities. With heightened interest, students are more likely to hold onto information and have deeper understandings.

    Slide 4- The 5E Inquiry Model outlines five steps or phases that encompass the meaning of inquiry based learning. Remember, it’s a process, and the steps or stages should be flexible and progress upon the level and readiness of the students involved.

    Slide 5- This could be something as simple as an intriguing ‘bell ringer’ to hook students into a topic at the start of a class period. Including images or video is always a good idea to help with recalling prior knowledge. The use of an online or mobile survey can help collect valuable information to help guide the next step.

    Slide 6- This step will take students’ initial thoughts and ideas on a topic begin to develop and strengthen their understandings. Students could work together on a hands-on activity to explore the topic with supplied materials, or independently research the material.

    Slide 7- Students must make their case in this step of the instructional model. Groups could create a display to outline or illustrate what was learned and then share with the class. Students should demonstrate the connection between the their evidence collected from the exploration and the content.

    Slide 8- In this step, students are challenged to think deeper and apply their understanding to other scenarios. Students could then take what they’ve learned in their initial exploration and transfer it to a higher-level thinking problem. A second hands-on component, virtual simulation, or an out of the box activity could be used to help students show that they can apply the content in other ways.

    Slide 9- Students should demonstrate their understanding by explaining with the use of evidence gathered from their hands-on activities, readings, and videos, rounded out with logical reasoning. Open-ended questions or constructed-responses can be completed in a Web 2.0 presentation or other format of choice.

    Slide 10- In any inquiry lesson, incorporate a variety of activities, hands-on and tech-based, to keep things interesting and prove to be beneficial to student learning. Also, keep it student-centered, focus on quality questioning, and remember to be flexible with the process.
