Music Magazine Evaluation

  1. 1. After I had decided I was going to do an RnB magazine, I had to find three magazines of the same genre. When researching, I couldn’t find many RnB magazines, so I decided to look for magazines who would be focusing at similar audiences, for example: Q isn’t a RnB magazine, it is more of an Indie/Pop magazine, but I assumed they were aimed at similar audiences due to the style of pictures, colours and text they both similarly use. After finding what magazines I was going to use, I brought my own copies of them and analysed each magazine’s front cover, contents page & a double page spread.
  2. 2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  3. 3. On the masterhead, I didn’t use many conventions. This is as firstly, I only wanted my masthead to take up a small percentage of the page, but also as I wanted to put a plug in the top right hand corner. However, Although I didn’t use the same colours ect, I thought the red writing was really eye catchy on Vibe magazine, which encouraged me to go ahead with the red box around my mast head. I used the colour red as it is a very forceful colour and illustrates importance and power. I have followed conventions of the boldness of my masthead. This is as I wanted my audience to be able to spot the magazine from a mile away, which is also why I used white against red so it is clear and stands out.
  4. 4. The fact that the writing is unadorned and white dissimilarities the fact that around the master head is a large red box. The colour red symbolises importance, significance and also prominence, so the occurrence that the box is red is really momentous as it gives the master head more meaning. I followed the conventions of this magazine as I thought the masthead was very eye catchy and looked effective and successful. I decided to add a black outline on my masthead, just to make it more bold and prominent. This allowed it to stand out and look more attention-grabbing.
  5. 5. I followed the conventions of the colour scheme, I just added a black outline around my writing to make it more prominent. I followed the conventions of It being in the top left hand corner of my front cover I didn’t follow the conventions of a one word masthead like “Q” has.
  6. 6. Eye contact Like Vibe magazine, I have made sure that my front cover model is making full eye contact with the audience. This is to make my readers feel more connected with “Bella”. Facial expression I followed the conventions of the facial expressions that “Trey Songz” was pulling on the front cover of Vibe magazine. “Bella’s” head is slightly more forward to the rest of her body which is aimed to make the readers feel more engaged with her, this is the same with Trey Songz. Bella’s lips are almost pouting, but in a very naturalistic way, which is exactly what Trey Songz is also doing. By doing these facial expressions make the model’s look very powerful and “in control” which is impression I wanted Bella to give off.
  7. 7. Facial Expression I didn’t follow conventions of XXL when taking my pictures. This is as I think the picture on your front cover should be of the model facing forward as this would make the audience automatically catch eye contact with them and make them engage more with the model and would make them want to read the story more. I made “Bella” have similar facial expressions to “Drake” as Drake looks powerful and authoritative in his picture and that’s the image I wanted Bella to have. Dress code I decided not to follow the dress code of Drake. I decided this as looking at Drake he is rather wrapped up which could give off the impression he is quite a secretive and personal person, where as, I didn’t want to give that image with Bella.
  8. 8. Dress Code The only thing I have done similarly on my magazine compared to Q’s magazine is the dress code. I thought the fact that all 4 men were dressed in smart black clothes made the picture look very sophisticated but also made them look imposing which is also the impression I wanted Bella to give off.
  9. 9.  The font in Vibe magazine is very simple and uninteresting. All of the fonts are the same, but they vary between red and white and larger and in the font sizes. Although, this goes well with the layout of the magazine, the simple writing actually looks effective and interesting. I decided to on one side of the magazine to have this simple writing and on the other side of the magazine to have posh writing and another style of plugs. This was to draw in different audiences and also to give my readers mixed vibes of what sort of information and artists were going to be inside.
  10. 10. I completely followed conventions when it came to the plugs of my magazine. I thought by listing some of the artists names who were involved inside the magazine was a really good idea as it gives the readers of the magazine more of an idea of which other artists they may be interested about reading about are in the magazine. I followed conventions when it came to the colour scheme as I felt the colours red and black stood out and gave the magazine prominence, significance and authority.
  11. 11. I didn’t follow conventions when it came to the plugs of Q magazine. Firstly I didn’t follow them as they were at the bottom of the page and I didn’t want to put my plugs at the bottom as I didn’t want any writing or information layering over my picture. When deciding on colours, I used a red which is a bright and powerful colour instead of using the grey which is what Q used, which is a dull boring colour. The red gave the magazine prominence, distinction and eminence.
  12. 12. I didn’t follow the conventions of Vibe magazine, as Vibe didn’t have a big cover line which stands out compared to the plugs, which is what I did.
  13. 13. I followed the conventions when it came to XXL magazine. For example: I put my cover line in the same place of which XXL’s was also. I also followed the conventions of the colour scheme, where in Vibe magazine, they had a gold and I also used gold, but just a darker shade. I also followed conventions of Vibe magazine, by putting a small cover line underneath the main one. Vibe magazine’s was “Watch the Throne” and my magazine’s was “Catch the Fire”. This is so it made our cover lines look more interesting and in depth.
  14. 14. I didn’t follow the conventions when I was creating my cover line, purely as the cover line of Q magazine, was in the bottom left hand corner, and I spread my cover line out covering the whole of the bottom of my picture. I didn’t use a white colour when constructing my cover line. I didn’t use this colour scheme as I wanted my magazine to express fortune and wealth, and the colour gold symbolises this.
  15. 15.  I chose to be unique with my headline and not go for something similar to Vibe’s as I didn’t think it made it clear enough to its audience that it was the contents page. Where as on mine, you could clearly tell it was the contents page due to me putting it at the top.  I followed the conventions of putting a few pictures on my contents page. I think by doing this it makes the contents page more interesting and attention-grabbing.  I followed the conventions of using big numbers to make it eye-catchy of what were the more important and top stories in the magazine.  I thought the idea of having a different layout of contents writing on the side of the contents page was really interesting and different, so I decided to follow this convention. This split the writing up a little bit and made it look more colourful, attractive and appealing.  I decided to put the name of my magazine on the bottom of every page, next to the page number just like vibe magazine did.
  16. 16.  I didn’t do my headline like XXL magazine, purely due to the fact I wasn’t using a two page contents page, I was using one page, also, I didn’t think XXL made it clear enough that it was a contents page, due to it not having a “contents” at the top. However, the way XXL done their contents page, linked well with the genre.  I follow the conventions of having big page numbers and then a small description of what the article is actually about underneath the name of the page and the page number.  I followed conventions of various smaller pictures, instead of just one picture. This is as I wanted to show my readers pictures of the main articles bands, so they would have more idea of the genre of the band and what they look like.  I didn’t follow the conventions of only sticking to one layout of the contents page, this is why I added in “The sub-zero review”. This is so that on the contents page, it had all sorts of different information on, not just page’s, this prevents it from becoming boring and repetitive.
  17. 17.  I followed the conventions of the headline, as I thought the way Q had set out their headline, made it very clear that it was the contents page, it also had the name of the magazine there and also the date, so I thought it do a similar sort of thing.  I followed the conventions of the separate part on the side of the contents page. This is so that my contents page wasn’t getting repetitive and boring, and that it had some different information on as well, such as: news, live gig ect which is in “The sub-zero review” and “The Q Review” on the side of both magazines.  I followed the conventions of the pictures. I used 3 small pictures on my contents page due to wanting to show the people who read my magazine, what the bands look like ect. This is also what they do on Q magazine.  I followed the conventions of putting a circled shape on my feature article picture on the contents page saying “cover story” just to make it obvious to the readers that it was that story which was the main story, they also done this on Q magazine.
  18. 18. Q magazine Vibe magazine Vibe magazine I followed the conventions all 3 magazines by using big page numbers. I done this so that the page numbers were very clear and visible and readers would find it really easy and simple to find the page you were looking for. I followed the conventions of all 3 magazines by writing small descriptions underneath the page number and title of the page so that my readers would have an idea of what the story was about before deciding whether to read it or not.
  19. 19. Vibe Magazine XXL Magazine Q Magazine  I followed the conventions of the colour red as it conveys power and authority.  I followed the conventions of the colour gold as it conveys fortune and wealth.  I followed the conventions of using big page numbers so that the readers can follow the magazine easier and will find it clear to go to the page they want to read.  I didn’t follow the conventions of XXL’S black and white layout as I wanted my pictures to be in colour.
  20. 20.  I didn’t follow conventions when taking my pictures and also when choosing my layout. I didn’t want to take up a whole page with a picture, so I decided to use half of a page and also used more than one picture, whereas Vibe only used one big one.  I didn’t follow conventions on the headline. I didn’t particularly like the way the headline had been done in Vibe magazine, I didn’t think it was very clear. Whereas, my headline is very clear, and I have used two types of fonts to make it a little more interesting.  I decided that instead of writing a biography/story about Bella, like Vibe did about Robin Thicke and Janelle Monade, I would write an interview that Bella had been answering, I done this as I think it would be more interesting and intriguing for my audience to read.  In my writing, I varied with the colour of my writing, unlike Vibe magazine. Either way of whether I done an interview or story, I would of varied with colours as I think it just makes it look more appetising to read and doesn’t look boring.
  21. 21.  I decided not to go for the same style of headline as XXL did, as I wanted my double page spread to look sophisticated, classy and urban, not unsophisticated. This is as, where XXL have used “#TWERK” as their headline, this would appeal to only one set of age-group due to them being the only people who understand, and I want my magazine to appeal to everyone.  Instead of just using 2 large pictures across my feature article, I decided to use various small pictures, this is so that the readers would have more of an idea of Bella and so that it would be more visual and interesting.  I decided not to follow conventions when it came to the style of writing I used on my feature article. Instead of “biography” style, I decided to write an interview, as I thought this would make it more interesting and fascinating to read.
  22. 22.  I decided to follow conventions of Q magazine with the amount of pictures. I decided that instead of doing 1 page of a full picture, that I’d do a few smaller pictures dotted around. This is so that the feature article looked more eye-catchy and interesting for readers.  I decided not to follow conventions with the “It’s a wrap” section on the side of Q’s feature article. This is as I felt It didn’t have much relevance to the article itself, and it was just there as a filler to take up the remaining of the page.  I didn’t put a caption on my picture, which I now realise I should of done. This is a convention of this feature article which if I was to do the magazine again, I would do.  I decided to instead of leaving it plain like Q magazine did, to put in a microphone, just so that before the readers had red the article, they already knew that she was a singer.
  23. 23. Vibe Magazine XXL Magazine  I didn’t follow the conventions when choosing how to write my text as I wrote it as an interview instead of a “story” like Vibe and Q magazine did. Q Magazine  I followed conventions when it came to XXL’s style of writing as I decided to do an interview instead of a biography style of writing.  I followed the conventions of all 3 magazines by writing in 3 columns, I did this so it looked neat and tidy.
  24. 24. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  25. 25. The age group of my magazine audience is around 16-25, I predict this as throughout my magazine I have used younger bands For Bella, I have made her out to be a confident, independent, strong-minded women with big plans ahead of her that she will fight to get there instead of making her out to be timid and shy. I have also made her seem a lot older than she is although she is only 17, to show the maturity that some young adults do actually have. I showed this mostly through the pictures I took of her which was her all dressed in black which I done to represent sophistication, classiness and elegance and in a picture on the feature article, I took a picture of her in a red t-shit, this red was to represent the power, authority and influence she had.
  26. 26. Emergent Service Workers: This new class has low economic capital but has high levels of 'emerging' cultural capital and high social capital. This group are young and often found in urban areas. The class of my audience would be Emergent Service workers and I found this out by going on BBC and looking at the Great British survey results. This is summing up that I predict my audience/readers would be people who go to concerts and gigs with friends a lot of the time to watch indie bands and RnB concerts (eg- the 1975 band as an indie band and Rihanna as a RnB concert).
  27. 27. My magazine is open and would appeal to both types of gender, boy and girl. This is as I have included information for both genders to be interested in. For example: I have included both pictures of boys and girls and information about boy and girl bands on the contents page and obviously a main picture of Bella on the front and a few on the feature article. This means that for example, men could look at the men as aspirational figures and would want to read about them because they want to be more like them and want to read about their lives ect, but could also be attracted to the women in the magazine and want to read about them to find out what their “perfect lady would be like” or something, this would be the same for women just the other way round.
  28. 28. What have I learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  29. 29. After trying out a lot of different ideas, I decided to place my masthead in a bright red box in the top left hand corner of my page. I decided the red box as it would make the masthead stand out and also red is a very powerful colour.  At the side of the photoshop document there is a row of different things you can do. I clicked on the rectangle symbol which produced this black rectangular box.  After I had produced the rectangular box, I didn’t want it to be black so wanted to change it to the colour red.  I changed the colour of the box by pressing this colour icon and finding the specific shade of red I wanted.
  30. 30.  After I created the red rectangular box, I wrote the first part of my masthead in it, which was “Sub”.  I didn’t want to keep it to the original font as I wanted it to be thicker and bolder so changed the font to “Franklin Gothic Book” from “Calibri (Body)”.  This was the end result once I had changed the font.
  31. 31.  I then decided I didn’t want my masthead to be all black, so decided to change it to white as it would still be clear and stand out on top of the red background.  This was the result after I had changed the colour of my masthead.  I then added in “zero” and decided to put it into the “S” of the “Sub” this is so it didn’t take up to much room and also so that it looked more interesting and creative.
  32. 32.  When looking at my masthead, I didn’t think it stood out enough, so I decided to put a black bolder around the white writing. I done this by clicking on the button “Edit Full” on the right hand side of the photoshop programme.  This is the end result of my masthead.
  33. 33.  I needed to crop my front cover picture due to only wanting the model on it and not the blue background.  I done this by clicking on the rubber symbol on the left hand side of the photoshop programme.  Then selecting “Magic Eraser Tool”. The magic eraser tool makes the whole of the background cut straight away but leaves the picture with slightly uneven edges which you need to sort out later on in the process.
  34. 34.  Once I had cropped the photo using the magic eraser tool, the edges needed to be straightened up.  To straighten up the outline of the picture I had to zoom in so that I didn’t cut off any bits of hair ect. To zoom in, I had to press the magnified glass on the side of the page.  When I had pressed the magnified glass button, I started off by zooming in on the part I thought looked the most rigid and the carry on from there.
  35. 35.  I then clicked on the “Eraser Tool” on the side of the page. This tool was a small rubber which rubbed out any rigid bits on the picture that were not needed and had to go.  This is the difference and end result of what it was like after I had used the “Eraser Tool” on my front cover picture , a lot more smooth and level.  After using the eraser tool for all of the picture, this was the result.
  36. 36.  The next step was to move the picture over to my magazine front cover. To do this I had to click on the picture and drag it over to the front cover page.  This was the end result.
  37. 37.  I started off by writing out the cover line “Bella” in size 70 font in the place where I wanted to place it on the page.  I then decided I wanted to go for a bolder and thicker font, so changed it to “KaiTi”.  From when I had changed my font, I think it already looked a lot more eye-catchy and appealing to an audience.
  38. 38.  I then decided that I wanted to use a more dominant and interesting colour, so I decided to use the colour gold. This represents fortune and wealth also.  As the gold didn’t show up very well on the picture, I decided to put a black border around my writing to make it stand out more. I don’t this by clicking on the “Effects” on the right hand side of the page and clicked on the thin black border.
  39. 39.  I then decided to add a different bit to the bottom of my cover line. I done it in a simple font and the colour black.  I decided that the font was to “simple” for the genre of my magazine, so decided to change it to a more exciting and interesting font.  The same as the top of the cover line, the black didn’t show very well when placed onto the picture, so I decided to again to change the colour to gold.
  40. 40.  The gold didn’t show again, very well when placed on the picture and wasn’t as clear as I wanted it to be, so I decided to use the black border around the writing, like I did on the top of the cover line.  This was the end result of my cover line once I had complete d it.
  41. 41.  Firstly, I decided I wanted to put my “contents” headline in a rectangle.  This is the rectangle it created. I then decided I wanted to change the colour to red as it was a more powerful colourful. I also changed the colour so it stuck to the colour scheme of the magazine which is Black, White, Gold and Red.
  42. 42.  I then wrote “Contents” in the rectangle in Calibri (Body) which is the font it automatically writes in and the colour black.  I then change the font from Calibri (Body) to PMingLiu as I didn’t want the headline to be as bold and “in your face” as the one previously was, but still kept the colour black.  This was the end result of this part of my contents headline process.
  43. 43.  I then decided to add the date in the top box due to people wanting to know what date the magazine was brought out, the know if they were up to date with the magazines.  I decided to keep it to the same font as the headline which was PMingLiu, but put it in italic and bold.  I then decided that I didn’t want the date to be in black as I didn’t want it all to be black, so I decided to change the colour to white, so that it would still stick to the colour scheme and be clear to read.
  44. 44.  This was the end result of this colour change of my date.  I then decided to add a “Subzero” into the rectangle as I think its important to have to masthead of the whole magazine on every page.  I then changed the font of “Subzero” to “Batang” as I thought it was a larger and thinner font which is what I wanted.
  45. 45.  This is what it looked like once I had changed the font of “Subzero”. Although I did think it looked a bit boring and minor, so I thought I’d add something more interesting.  To make it more interesting and appealing to the audience, I decided to put a gold glittery effect around the writing, this is so that it was given a sense of dominance and importance but also so it looked more engaging and attractive for the audience to look at. It also still links into the colour scheme of the magazine which is: Black, White, Gold and Red.  This is the result.
  46. 46.  In the long process of my contents page, I finally decided to put big page numbers with my contents page descriptions. This is so that the readers would find it really easy and clear to find the page they wanted to go to.  When I first wrote the number “5” it was very thin, dainty and small. This wasn’t how I wanted my numbers to be as they wasn’t a clear and visible as I imagined. So I changed the font to “Verdena” from “Calibri (Body)” as it’s a thicker and larger font and also set to size from a “20” to a “35” to make the number pages a lot more visible and clear.
  47. 47.  I started off with this picture which I wanted to be small in a corner of my contents page to represent and show the audience who “Bella” was. To do this, I had to crop the picture so that I just had Bella without a background.  To do this I had to start off with the “Magic Eraser Tool” which rubs out all of the background around “Bella” and leaves just her body.  As good as this tool is, it still leaves little marks not rubbed out and also leaves the edges around Bella rather rigid and uneven.
  48. 48.  So that I could sort out these rigid and uneven lines, I had to use the magnified glass tool to zoom into the bits that needed to be sorted out and straightened and smoothed out to make them more even.  I started this by zooming into the bottom part of the picture as was going to make my way up. This picture is of my models leg, which is look rather uneven, so I thought I had better even it out so it didn’t look messy when moving it onto my magazine contents page.  To straighten the edges out and make them more even, I had to select the tool “Eraser Tool” to go forward and do this.
  49. 49.  Once I had used the “Eraser Tool” on the whole of the picture, it looked a lot more neat and tidy, so it was ready to go on to my magazine contents page.  To do this I had to put both of my magazine contents page and the picture document next to each other, then click onto the picture and drag it.  When the picture was on my magazine contents page, I made it the correct size that I wanted it and then placed it in the correct place I wanted it to be. This is the end result of this part of my magazine contents page.
  50. 50.  When starting with my headline of my feature article page, I decided I wanted to write Bella in a large, sophisticated font, in black and make it very bold.  This meant that I had to change the font to a more aristocratic and superior font.  I then decided to add “Of The Ball” underneath it, to give the impression off “Bella” being “royal” and “imperial” as it is royal people who normally go to “balls”.
  51. 51.  I then changed the “Of The Ball” to a font called “Edwardian Script IT” as it was a more royal, posh and grand font, which was the style I was going for.
  52. 52.  I then decided I wanted to change the colour of the “Of The Ball” as I didn’t want everything on the page to be in black and I wanted a brighter colour, by adding this colour still meant I was sticking to the colour scheme of the magazine as well.  This is the end result of when I changed “Of The Ball” to the colour red.
  53. 53.  This is the picture I wanted to put onto my double page spread, but didn’t want to put it on because of the light reflections you can see on the board. So I decided to colour it in and make it work.  To do this I had to use the “Brush Tool”.  After colouring in the background in a similar blue colour to the original photo and going over the writing in a thin black made the picture look more effective and interesting and there wasn’t any light reflections to be seen.
  54. 54. In what kind of media institution might distribute my media product and why?
  55. 55.  I personally think Quincy Jones & Time Inc. who partnered up to publish Vibe would publish my magazine. I think this as our audiences would be rather similar if not, the same and we also use similar colour schemes, layouts, camera angles ect.  I think that Q magazine would publish my magazine due to having similar audience types and although Q isn't a RnB magazine, our magazines are extremely similar. This is as Q adds in different information and doesn’t just stick to their one genre, which is what I have done also.  I think that XXL magazine would publish my magazine due to similar audience types and also similar layouts and colour schemes. Inside they also write interviews instead of a “story layout” which is what I have also done.
  56. 56. Who would be the audience for my media product?
  57. 57.  Sub-zero is designed to interest an audience of both sex’s ranging from ages from 16-25. I have made my magazine a unisex magazine so that this would hopefully increase the sales of my product.  My magazine includes various interviews from all different “top class” celebrities, not always being RnB artists, seeing when their next tours are and interesting news and gossip.  I decided to involve lots of different information so that my magazine would appeal to a collection of different people and also so that everything in my magazine isn’t always the same, similarly like artists such as: Rihanna, Trey Songz, Nicki Minaj & Drake who never stick to one certain genre.
  58. 58. I was required to survey around 20-25 people of a range of the ages 16-32 that were specifically fit the criteria/genre my magazine was going to be aimed at. I created a questionnaire of 14 questions and in each question I asked had a purpose in terms of helping me construct my magazine. By doing this gave me a clear insight to what I needed to do to my magazine to make it specifically appeal to the audience I was aiming it at.
  59. 59. • In the account of the results I received from my audiences, gave me a clearer idea of what I was going to do with my magazine and what they would prefer. It made it a lot easier for me also as I knew exactly what the audience I was aiming at liked and preferred. • From this survey I decided that I was going to for example: use the colour scheme “Black, White, Red and Gold” on the contents page as this is what the audiences wanted, but I also then decided to stick to the same colour scheme throughout the magazine.
  60. 60. How did I attract/address my audience?
  61. 61. + + + =  I used the colour scheme Red, Black, White & Gold throughout my magazine. I used these colours as they are all powerful colours. The colours all mean something also, I used the colour red as it is a powerful, dominant but also passionate colour, this links with the passion that all of the artists have for their music in this industry but also the power and composition in the industry. The black represents sophistication and classy style which link to all artists when they go up to the red carpet and the Brit Awards ect. The white represents happiness and faithfulness which represents how artists feel most of the time about their jobs and that they are very faithful for the lucky life they have and the colour gold represents wealth and fortune which most artists are also associated with.  I think this attracted my audience as the colours are all quite bright colours which makes the magazine eye-catchy and stand out. It also makes it look more fun and exciting. Another thing is when looking at the magazine it looks warm and kind as the colours are all quite light and friendly, where as if I had used the colours: Black, navy blue, dark green and brown the magazine would have looked fierce and violent.
  62. 62.  I decided to write descriptions under my page numbers and titles. I decided to do this as I thought it would give the readers more of an idea about the artist before they read the article about them, this could also help them decide on whether they actually want to go forward and read the whole article. The description is just a small brief of what the article is mainly about. For example, Died in Orbit page was about the boys winning their first trophy at the Brit Awards 2013.  I think this attracted the audience as it shows that the magazine company is well organised and wants to give their audience as much information as they possible can about the artists. It also would make the reader feel like it is worth the money as it has all the information in they want to know and most probably more.
  63. 63.  I decided that instead of writing a simple story about Bella, I would write an interview. I done this as an interview as I thought it would be more interesting and you would end up finding out more about their person life and how they personally would react to certain situations  I feel like this would attract my audience as an interview is a lot more interesting and exciting to read as it can get more personal and deep into the individuals life. You also get an idea of how directly “Bella” speaks and acts to certain situations.
  64. 64.  Writing some of the most famous RnB artists on the front of my magazine would attract my audience, as RnB fans, who would be the audience of this magazine, would most probably be interested in these artists as they are the best of the best.  I think my audience would want this to be in this way as they would be aware of what big RnB stars are in the magazine, which would help them make up their mind about whether they wanted to buy it.  The colour scheme of my magazine throughout is Black, White, Red & Gold. I think this would attract my audience as all of the colours are quite powerful, dominant colours which would catch the readers eye. They are also mature colours, and this would appeal to my audience as they would feel more superior and important.  I think my audience would want it to be like this as he colours I have used look neat and also allows everything to look clear and visual to look at, they are bright colours which also permit it to look fun and entertaining.
  65. 65.  I decided to use a range of different pictures, one of a boy group, one of a girl group and one of a girl single artist. This is so that it could attract a variety of people who could either be interested in Bella, No limits, Died in orbit or all of them. I also decided to include massive artists pages such as “Lady Gaga, Disclosure, Arctic Monkeys”. I think this would appeal to my audience as not only would they be reading about the star they loved but also they could read about stars they didn’t know so much about for example: Bella who is a new star and could find out a little bit more about her. In all of the pictures, I also decided to show the characters “personality” in their pictures, for example: in the girl band “No Limits” picture they are all hard faced with no emotion which would automatically give the audience an idea that they were not “pop music” but something more “hard”.  I think my audience would have wanted to do my pictures/ contents page in this way as they could see what the “main stories” artists look like and have more of an idea of them before they have even read the article.
  66. 66.  I decided to add “The sub-zero Review” onto my contents page as I wanted to add something extra instead of just having a “simple” contents page.  I think this would appeal to my audience and I feel like my audience would have wanted me to do this as it gives them extra information, not just of the pages that certain things are on, but also extra information and Live Tours, New Albums and Celeb News. This makes it more interesting for the readers.  I decided to do my page numbers on my contents page reasonably large so that it was clear to the audience exactly what page had what information on. I also decided to do my “title” in red and description of the story in black so that they stood out from each other.  I think this would appeal to my audience and I feel like my audience would have wanted me to do this as it makes their lives a lot more easier as it is very clear and visible exactly what is the title, what is the description and where the information is (page numbers).
  67. 67.  I decided to do my story, instead of just writing a “biography” of Bella, I decided to do an interview.  I feel like this would appeal to my audience and feel like my audience would have wanted me to do this as an interview is a lot more interesting and exciting to read as it can get more personal and deep into the individuals life. You also get an idea of how directly “Bella” speaks and acts to certain situations.  When deciding on how to do my headline for my feature article, I wanted it to sort of, reflect on Bella's life. So, Bella is a very smart, elegant person which is where the “Bella” font comes from and the colour black as black is a very urbane and classy colour, but she can also have a lot of fun and is a very loving and caring person which is why I wrote “Of The Ball” in a more fun, enjoyable font in the colour red which indicates love, passion and joy.  I feel like this would appeal to my audience and feel like my audience would have wanted me to do this as the colours and fonts of the headline imply Bella’s nature and personality, which automatically give people a “warm” feeling about her.
  68. 68.  The language I have used for the contents page is in the middle of formal and in-formal. This is because I don’t know the academic levels of my audience, so I thought I’d do a mix of simple and sophisticated words to please both parties.  The language I used when making my feature article was in-formal but not really simple. I decided to do this as there is more writing so it is probably easier for readers to read it if it isn't in massively sophisticated language, also Bella isn't a “posh” girl, she is just your “normal everyday girl”.
  69. 69. What have I learnt in the progression of my preliminary task and my full product?
  70. 70. This is my school magazine front cover that I created when I first started my Media A Level. This is my music magazine front cover.
  71. 71.  My cropping on my music magazine compared to my school magazine is massive. On the school magazine, I have cropped little parts of my boy model’s head off, this is something I have learnt through time and its became easier for me to crop pictures smoothly and more neatly (like I have in my music magazine) as I have come to terms more with photoshop and learnt how to understand and use it more ect.
  72. 72.  The colour-scheme on my school magazine was Blue and Yellow and then my model was dressed in red. These colours did not link or look right. The colours went against each other and made the magazine look messy.  On my Music Magazine, I used the colour scheme: Red, Gold, White and Black. All of these colours are powerful and all look good and go well with each other, but they also go with the genre of music representing power and wealth.  I have improved as I have looked at other magazines and took in what colours they have used and researched the meanings of the colours to see if they represent anything, which they normally do, so I wanted to go for the same type of thing for my music magazine, whereas I never done this on my School Magazine.
  73. 73.  This is my school magazine contents page.  This is my music magazine contents page.
  74. 74.  On my school magazine, I didn’t use any pictures and just left the background black and simple. It makes the magazine look plain and boring and I wouldn’t personally buy a magazine what looked like this.  With my music magazine, I added 3 photos of my 3 original bands which were the most “talked about” and “biggest stories” in the magazine, this is so that the audience would get an idea of what the artists looked like ect.
  75. 75.  On my music magazine, I didn’t write descriptions under my pages and page numbers, I just wrote the page numbers and the titles of the pages.  On my music magazine I wrote a small description underneath each of the page numbers and titles. This is so the audience would get a small idea of what the article is about so they could make the decision if they wanted to read it or not.
  76. 76. Cropping Skills. Editing Techniques (Eg – Using borders around text, using shadows on texts, backgrounds and photos, glittery effects on writing ect). o I personally think that I have improved on everything in photoshop and that is why the contrast of my two magazine’s are massive.
