Blue mix and cloudone jazz vpc

  1. 1.   BlueMix  and  CloudOne  Jazz  VPC     This  brief  describes  CloudOne’s  BlueMix+Jazz  VPC.       Do  what  you  do  best.    We’ll  do  the  rest.     CloudOne  Corporation   9247  North  Meridian  |  Suite  222  |  Indianapolis  |  Indiana  |  USA   +1  (888)  850-‐CLOUD  |  sales@oncloudone.com   www.OnCloudOne.com         CloudOne   Brief
  2. 2. 2   What  is  BlueMix?     BlueMix  is  a  multi-‐tenant  Platform  as  a  Service  (PaaS)  in  the  Public  Cloud.  The  BlueMix   environment  is  based  on  Cloud  Foundry  technology,  which  is  an  open  source  PaaS.     BlueMix  provides  services  that  are  above  and  beyond  what  is  provided  by  Cloud   Foundry.    It  includes  services  like  Node.js,  Cloudant,  WebSphere  eXtreme  Scale  and   Elastic  MQ  (WebSphere  MQ)  just  to  name  a  few.         Figure 1: Multi-tenant Architecture (Shared Resources)     As  BlueMix  is  based  on  Cloud  Foundry,  in  Cloud  Foundry,  in  Cloud  Foundry  parlance  it   provides  “Managed  Services.”    That  means  these  are  actual  Cloud  Foundry  services  that   will  scale  an  application  as  it  leverages  these  services  to  build  cloud-‐based  applications.   Imagine  a  client  wants  to  build  an  application  and  readily  deploy  the  new  “Tumblr”   services.    The  client  can  choose  various  services  on  BlueMix,  catalog,  bind  them   together,  develop  code,  and  deploy  and  scale  the  application  accordingly  in  a  multi-‐ tenant  environment.       BlueMix  also  comes  with  DevOps  as  a  service,  which  is  lightweight  version  control,   defect  tracking  and  planning  solution  for  developing  applications  in  the  Public  Cloud.   Typical  client  for  BlueMix  environment   The  typical  user  for  BlueMix  would  be  a  small  company,  “garage  entrepreneneurs,”  or   Enterprise  clients  wanting  to  develop  “skunk  works”  projects  for  the  Cloud   environment.  Some  of  the  clients  can  also  use  BlueMix  to  build  “Systems  of   Engagement”  type  applications  for  their  in-‐house  “System  of  Record”  type  applications.     For  example,  imagine  an  insurance  company  wanted  to  build  an  EZClaim  system  through   an  iPhone  application.    The  iPhone  application  development  environment  could  be  on   BlueMix.    When  the  application  captures  personal  information  which  cannot  reside  on   BlueMix,  that  application  may  transmit  the  information  back  into  the  company’s   database  behind  a  firewall.
  3. 3.     3     CloudOne  Managed  Services  for  Jazz   CloudOne  provides  the  entire  Jazz  Platform  in  an  unshared,  secure  Virtual  Private  Cloud   (VPC).    Consider  the  CloudOne  offering  as  a  soft  appliance  delivered  via  the  Cloud.  It  is   further  augmented  by  CloudOne’s  World  Class  Managed  Services  capability.           Figure 2: CloudOne Virtual Private Cloud   Unlike  the  Managed  Services  as  described  by  CloudFoundry,  the  CloudOne  managed   service  is  like  an  on-‐demand  IT  organization  supporting  your  integrated  Rational   Platform  Software  Appliance  in  the  Cloud.    In  the  case  for  BlueMix,  services  can  be   upgraded  based  on  the  vendor  providing  the  services.    For  instance,  a  new  version  of   CloudFoundry  is  released  and  the  BlueMix  support  team  will  upgrade  everyone  who  is   on  the  BlueMix  environment.     In  the  case  of  CloudOne’s  VPC  and  Managed  Services,  it  can  be  upgraded  at  your  time  of   choosing.  If  there  are  any  integration  issues  that  need  to  be  addressed,  they  are   attended  to  early  on  in  mock  upgrades,  etc.      This  allows  the  development  environment   not  to  go  offline  for  several  days.     Types  of  clients  CloudOne  Services  Corporation  helps:   1. Enterprise  clients  who  are  paranoid  about  Public  Cloud  and  Shared  resources.   2. Clients  who  think  IBM’s  enterprise  solutions  are  too  “clunky”  to  install  and   experience.   3. Clients  with  challenges  upgrading  and  managing  their  existing  Jazz  and  Rational   investment.     4. Customers  can  install  the  Rational  Performance  Test  product  locally  and  provide   load  generation  hardware  locally.
  4. 4. 4   Are  BlueMix  and  CloudOne  Services  competing  with  each  other?     No.  CloudOne  Service  is  complimentary  to  BlueMix.  There  are  Enterprise  clients  that   want  to  manage  both  their  “Systems  of  Engagement”  and  “Systems  of  Record”  by   leveraging  the  Cloud  and  that  is  where  CloudOne  adds  value  to  BlueMix.  Clients  now   acquire  Cloud-‐like  elasticity  without  compromising  security  for  their  in-‐house  and   external  applications.     BlueMix  is  a  run-‐time  environment  for  web-‐basd  applications  to  scale  using  Public  Cloud   instances.  The  DevOps  as  a  Service  capability  within  BlueMix  are  a  subset  of  what  Jazz   solutions  offer.  Some  differences  to  consider  are:     Rational  Jazz   DevOps  as  a  Service   Integrated  ALM  solution  (Requirements,   Testing,  Development)   Subset   of   services   from   RTC   such   as   Defect   Tracking,   Code   management,   Dash   boarding,   and  Planning   Ability  to  make  process  customization     Use   what   is   available,   cannot   customize   process   Role  Based  Access  to  team  members       Limited  Role  Based  Access     Eclipse-‐based  code  editing  and  supports   integration  with  Eclipse  Orion  for  web-‐based   editing     Integrated  web-‐based  code  editing,  with   ability  to  integrate  with  Native  Eclipse   Customized  work  item  workflows     Limited  customizability  of  work  item   workflows   Ability  to  integrate  with  different  build  engines     Limited  ability  to  integrate  with  different  build   engines   Support  Enterprise  workflows     Limited  ability  to  support  Enterprise  workflow   Manual  testing  ability  and  traceability  across   the  SDLC   Limited  traceability  across  the  SDLC   Enterprise  Requirements  Management  Ready   Requirements  management  is  done  through   work  items   Ability  to  import  code  from  other  types  of   repositories   Limited  ability  to  import.    In  most  cases   projects  start  from  scratch
  5. 5.     5     Summary  of  Capabilities  between  Rational  Jazz  on  Virtual   Private  Clouds  and  BlueMix     Rational  on  Virtual  Private  Cloud  (VPC)   BlueMix   Existing  Jazz  environment  hosted  in  the  Cloud     Multi-‐tenant  environment  hosted  in  the  Cloud       No  shared  resources       Sharing  resources  with  other  projects  on  the   server     Upgrades  on  client  schedule     Upgrades  when  the  BlueMix  team  upgrades   the  environment     Client  has  administrative  access  to  VPC   environment  (i.e.  even  to  the  resources   beyond  the  application)       Client  has  admin  access  to  the  Application   environment,  but  not  to  the  resources     Enterprise  Ready  environments  with  full   fledged  customizability     Shared  environments  with  limited   customizability     To learn more or request a demo, visit www.OnCloudOne.com
