  5. 5. Descriptive function It is the first step in the description of the image. This means identifying objects and sitters and locate them in time and space.
  6. 6. Code The second step is the analysis of the stylistic code, i.e. The technique employed by the maker: <ul><li>Form and balance, that is the way the masses are organized in the painting;
  7. 7. The lines;
  8. 8. The shapes;
  9. 9. The use of light;
  10. 10. The use of colour; the kind of texture. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Viewer's response Finally the viewer's response deals with the mood and the emotions aroused by the image in the viewer.
  12. 12. Expressive function The next step is to recognize the expressive function of the image, that is the information it gives of the maker's emotions and of the theme/s he wants to convey.
