From the Editorial desk
Sri Maha Periva Thiruvadigal Charanam.
We are pleased to present this second edition of our Periva Forum newsletter, dedicated to spreading
the message and teachings of Sri Maha Periva.
Within the last one month, our forum has seen a net addition of close to 200 new members. So, we take
the opportunity to welcome all our new members once again, and request all of you to spread the word
around about this Forum and the website www.periva.org – which are aimed at bringing together all the
devotees of Sri Maha Periva.
We would also like to mention about the arrival of few senior, respected members to our Forum. One is
Sri Srinivasan of Pune (cnu.pne in the forum), who has been posting excellent images and articles of
Paramacharya and the other is Sri P R Ramachander, who is adored for his tremendous contribution to
the field of translation of Slokas, Stotras and Kritis. Their presence in this Forum will further embellish
the great divine experiences of our members.
The kind of interactions on the Forum and the quality of readership/responses has improved
tremendously, and we are seeing very active participation by members on the Forum, which is really
satisfying.

Last month also witnessed the release of the first ebook by the Kanchi Periva Forum on Hindu traditions
& rituals. It was a lovely compilation of essence of knowledge by Subi Anna, ably assisted by Smt Sumi,
and Shri Raman.
We had some great personal interactions with a few members where they have volunteered to identify
few more individuals with touching personal experiences, which have never been shared elsewhere.
Some of our members have come forward to contribute articles to the newsletter and one such article
from Sri R Balaji is included in this edition. We welcome other contributors also to take part in the
upcoming editions.
We would like to convey our sincere thanks and appreciations to the following members, who run the
forums with their amazing commitment and contributions (forum names used): audhitya, cnu.pne,
hemalathak, iobprasad, kahanam, krsiyer, mahajadam, Radha. Special thanks to our Forum moderators

he goal of dharma is universal welfare. The great

men who produced the works on Dharmasastra didn't
have a trace of self-interest in them and had nothing but
the thought of the happiness of all creatures.

These treatises are the authority on which dharma is
founded. You find the form of things, the image, with
your eyes; you perceive sound with your ears; you know
dharma with the help of Dharmasastra.

The Vedas (Sruti) are the root of all dharma. After Sruti comes Smrti. The latter consists of the "notes"
based on Smrti. It is the same as Dharmasastra.
Another guide for the dharma is the example of great men. The Puranas provide an answer to how great
men conducted themselves. Then there is sistacara to guide us, the life of virtuous people of noble
character.
Not everybody's conduct can be a guide to us. The individual whose life is an example for the practice of
dharma must have faith in the sastras and must live in accordance with their ordinances.
Besides, he must be free from desire and anger. The conduct of such men is sistacara. Another authority
or guide is what we know through our conscience in a state of transparency.
In matters of the Self, of dharma and religion, the Vedas are in the forefront as our guide. Next come the
dharmasastras. Third is the conduct of the great sages of the past. Fourth is the example of the virtuous
people of our own times.
Conscience comes last in determining dharma.
Now everything has become topsy-turvy. People give importance first to their conscience and last to the
Vedas. We must consult our conscience only as a last resort when we have no other means of knowing
what is dharma with reference to our actions.

Why is conscience called one's "manahsaksi"? Conscience is fit to be
only a witness(saksi), not to be a judge. A witness often gives false
evidence. The mind, however, doesn't tell an untruth - indeed it
knows the truth of all things.
" There is no deceit that is hidden from the heart(mind), " says Auvvai. Conscience may be regarded as a
witness. But nowadays it is brought in as a judge also in dharmic matters. As a witness it will give us a
true report of what it sees or has seen.
But on the basis of it we cannot give on what is just with any degree of finality. "What I think is right, "
everybody would try to satisfy himself thus about his actions if he were to be guided only by his
conscience. How can this be justified as the verdict of dharma?

We often hear people say, "I will act according to what my conscience
tells me. " This is not a right attitude. All at once your conscience
cannot be given the place of a judge.
It is only when there is no other way open to you that you may tell your mind: "You have seen
everything as a witness. Now tell me your opinion. " The mind belongs to each one of us as individuals.
So it cannot be detached from our selfish interests. The place it has in one's personal affairs cannot be
given to it in matters of religion.
On questions of dharma the opinion of sages alone is valid, sages who were concerned with universal
welfare and who transcended the state of the individual concerned with his own mind [or with himself].

Here are a few collections of moving experiences of devotees with Sri Maha Periva. We are only
presenting a few from the hundreds available on our Forum.

Experience # 1 – If everyone becomes a Jnaani
When Sri Periyaval was camping at Orirukkai, a foreigner came to India. He wanted a ticket from Delhi to
Mumbai. He was not able to get it. So he took the flight to Madras.
When he came out of Meenambakkam he wondered where to go. He asked the taxi driver, "Is there any
self-realized leader here?". The taxi man replied, "The Sankaracharya Swami of Kanchipuram is here."

Experience # 2 – Anju pradishinam (Five rounds)
Swamiji said, "adede! is it Meenakshi Paatti? What a wonder you have come in the morning time? Who
is near you? Your granddaughter? What name?"
Meenakshi Paatti said, "Periyavaa! I am coming to the maTham to have your darshan for ever so many
years. Till today I haven't informed SwamigaL about me. There was no such opportunity. But then, it has
come now. This girl standing by my side is my granddaughter born through my daughter. Since she was
born in this town, we named her Kamakshi.

Experience # 3 – Gold coin for Rama Nama
The camp was at Mylapore, Chennai, at the Sanskrit College. A little girl came to Periyaval and
submitting a note-book claimed to have written the Rama Nama a lakh times. She was given a gold coin.
A practice was followed Sri Matha in those days. A silver coin was given to those who wrote the Rama
Nama twelve thousand and five hundred times, and a gold coin to those who wrote the Rama Nama one
lakh times.
This practice had been introduced to inspire children and housewives to write the Divine Name in their
free time. Many wrote Rama Nama with sincere devotion and submitting their note books went home
with the silver or gold coin given in blessing. The coin would be placed in the puja and worshipped.

The essence of Vedas
(Excerpts from our Periva’s discourses, compiled by Subi Anna, Chicago)
In the first newsletter of the Kanchi Periva Forum Vol.1/May2012, we presented on page 9 “A short
story of Vedas” as told by Periva.
Kanchi Periva has talked a lot about the essence of Vedas. In this article, we are just highlighting a few of
his important observations.
A common question that is frequently asked by many people is: What is the essence of Vedas and what
do they really teach us? Jagadguru Periva answers this question in very simple terms and in a manner
easily understandable by anyone.
"The principle on which the Vedic religion is founded," observes the Sage of Kanchi, "is that a man must
not live for himself alone but serve all mankind."
Periva goes on to say: “All Vedas have one common goal though there are differences among their
adherents. What is the goal? It is the well-being of the entire world and all creatures living in it, and the
uplift of the Self of each one of us and its everlasting union with the Ultimate Reality.
We may take pride in the Vedas for another reason also. They do not point to a single way and proclaim,
"This alone is the path" nor do they affirm, "This is the only God" with reference to their own view of the
Supreme Being. Instead, they declare that, if one adheres to any path with faith or worships any deity
with devotion, one will be led towards the Truth.
The scripture of no other religion speaks thus of the many paths to liberation. On the contrary, each of
them insists that the way shown by it alone will lead to liberation. The Vedas alone give expression to
the exalted view that different people may take different paths to discover the one and only Truth.
The Vedas reveal the One Truth to us in the form of many deities. Vedas form the one scripture as the
source common to the different sects and schools of thought in the Hindu religion.”
"The Vedas hold out," declares the Paramaguru, “the ideal of liberation here itself. That is their glory.
Other religions hold before people the ideal of salvation after a man's departure for another world."
To repeat, the ultimate teaching of the Vedic religion is liberation here and now. After all, what is the
purpose of any religion? Our Acharya answers this question too: "If an individual owing allegiance to a
religion does not become a jnanin (knowledgeable one) with inward experience of the truth of the
Supreme Being, what does it matter whether that religion does exist or does not?"
The Vedas that constitute the scripture common to all and which reveal the Godhead that is common to
us also teach us how to lead our life, and- this is important- they do us the ultimate good by showing us
in the end the way to become that very Godhead ourselves.

They are our refuge both here and the hereafter and are the source and root of all our different
traditions, all our systems of thought. All sects, all schools of our religion, have their origin in them. The
root is one but the branches are many.
The Vedas are the source not only of various divisions of Hinduism, all the religions of the world may be
traced back to them. It is our bounden duty to preserve them for all time to come with their glory
undiminished.
Critics call this Dharma ritual-ridden without realizing that the rituals have a higher purpose, that of
disciplining you, cleansing your consciousness, and preparing you for the inward journey. In a word,
chitta - suddhi is the means to a higher end. From work we must go to worklessness.
Author’s Note: My work is primarily concerned with providing brief compilations of Periva's discourses in
Tamil at various times and forums. The English translations that I provide are primarily intended for the
benefit of those who do not speak, read or understand Tamil. They are posted here with the sole
intention of carrying Periva's message to the members of this esteemed group. I take this opportunity to
acknowledge with thanks the publications, authors, devotees and other resources from whom I have
gathered some inputs to my task. Above all, I submit my humblest ananthakoti namaskarams to
Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamiji, well-known as Kanchi Periva who is the real

In the previous newsletter, we understand some portions of the Garbha Upanishad. Let us continue our
journey in to the rich secrets of science embedded in our Upanishad. As earlier, we shall draw on the

Garbha Upanishad (Continued…)
The formation of the embryo and its stages of development:
On a perfect day and on the uniting of the male and female reproductive fluids, after the lapse of one
night, the embryo is in a mixed (semi-fluid) state.
After seven nights from thereon, it takes the shape of a bubble formed out of water. At the end of a
fortnight, it takes the shape of a solid lump. It gets solidified and hardened at the end of one month.
In two months, the head takes form. At the end of three months, the legs and foot are formed. And by
the fourth month, the wrist, stomach and the hip, waist etc are formed.
During the fifth month, the spine and the adjoining bones get shaped. The Mouth, Nose, Eyes and the
Ears are all formed during the sixth month.
In the seventh month, life or the jivan enters the body shaped so far. By the eighth month, it attains full
shape and gets fulfilled with all other remaining parts. If the potency of the father (the male) is stronger
than the mother, it becomes a male and vice-versa. If the potency of both the father and the mother are
equal with no pulling force in either, it becomes a napumsaka. (neither a male nor a female)
It is born as a blind or as a deaf or dumb or short or with other deficiency due to any mental confusion
during the period of pregnancy. If the male reproductive fluid is split because of the air moving around
in the body, twins are born.
When the body comprised of the five natural forces acquires intelligence by the infusion of the jivan (or
the soul), it also acquires the five intellectual organs and the brain, which enables the jivan to distinguish
between different forms of objects and tastes.
Having obtained this intelligence, the jivan immediately starts contemplating on the eternal syllable
“OM”. Once he digests the essence of the same, he understands the fact that the eight basic forces (five
sense organs, the mind, intellect and ego) and their sixteen variants belong to the soul or the jivan
residing in the body.
Whatever is consumed or drunk by the mother passes through the nerves dovetailed with the child’s to
the jivan, which is satisfied with such feed. It is during the ninth month that all the sense organs and
intellect organs attain completeness.
And during this time, the jivan is reminded of its previous birth and it realizes all the good and bad deeds
it committed during such previous birth.

Thus thinks the jivan: “By me thousands of birth points (vagina) have been seen; various foods have
been tasted; and innumerable times mother’s milk has been drunk (to convey that the jivan had various
mothers during its earlier births). I have born and died again and again.”
“All my near and dear (of earlier births) for whom I performed various actions (in earlier births), whether
good or bad, have enjoyed the benefits of my actions and have left me all alone. I am left behind all
alone. “
“Once I come out of this birth source (vagina), I am going to surrender myself to the destroyer of all sins
and the Salvation provider – Maheswara, also called as Naaraayana (or the Supreme Being called by
various names). I am going to chant his name and other mantras to destroy all my sins carried from my
earlier births.”
“Once I come out of this birth source, I am going to practice the Gnaana Yoga (the pursuit of knowledge)
strictly to destroy all my sins and to release myself from the bondings of all actions in this materialistic
world. Once I come out of this birth source, I am going to contemplate on this Supreme Divine
Brahman.” – These are the thoughts of the jivan during the time it remains in the womb.
However, when he reaches the birth source (vagina) and comes out of it with great difficulty on to the
earth, he is inflicted with the illusory force (Maya) created by Vishnu and immediately forgets all the
previous births and the deeds performed therein.
His memory is cleansed of all the history the very moment he first inhales the air after coming to the
earth.

Devata Darshan
In this edition, we shall review details of Shri Ulagalandha Perumal Temple, which is located in
Kanchipuram.
The temple is about 200 meters from the Kamakshi amman temple. This is a temple of 4 divya desams
within a single temple complex. Apart from the main deity of Ulagalanda Perumal, there are three
other deities in the same complex which were in different places nearby. Details of the original
temple, Sthala Vruksham and Pushkarani are not known excepting the informations from the Azhwar’s
pasurams.
Thiru Neeragam: This is a small shrine in the northern praharam. Sri Jagadeesa Perumal and
Neelamangala Valli Thayar are the main deities. Only the Utsava Vigraham is present and the
whereabout of the moolavar vigraham and the original temple are not known. The Theertham here is
known as Akrura theertham and the Vimanam Jagadeeswara vimanam.
Thirukkaragam: This shrine is also located in the praharam of Ulagalandha Perumal Temple. The
Utsava moorthy is Sri Karunakara Perumal and the thayar is Padamamani Nachiyar. Details of the
original temple, Sthala Vruksham and Pushkarani are not known excepting the fact from the
Thirumangai Azhwar’s pasurams that the main deity is in standing posture. The Theertham is Akraya
theertham and Vimanam is Vamana vimanam.
Thiru Karavanam: This is another divya desam shrine in the praharam of Ulagalandha Perumal temple.
Details of the original temple, Sthala Vruksham and Pushkarani are not known excepting the fact from
the Thirumangai Azhwar’s pasurams that the main deity is Thiru Kalvar in a standing posture and the
Thayar is Kamalavalli Nachiyar. Only the Utsava moorthy is present. The Theertham is Gowrithadakam
and the Vimanam is Pushkala Vimanam.
Thiru Ooragam:
Significance: The main deity is imposing 35 feet height and 24 feet width
Location: Near Kamakshi Amman temple
Main deity: Trivikrama called Ulagalandha Perumal and Aranaravalli Nachiyar in different shrines.
Legend: During Thrivikrama avathara, Vishnu asked for 3 steps of land from King Mahaballi. Mahabali
agreed to give and for one step of Vishnu, Mahabali was already under the feet of Vamana and was
unable to get the full dharshan of Trivikrama. He penanced here to have a full dharshan and
Trivikrama reappeared in front of him and even then he was not able to see the complete form. Per
his request Thrivikrama in the form of Aadhiseshan is present in the same temple.
Temple: The main deity Ulagalandha Perumal is magnificent in size with His left leg lifted up to sky.
Everyone will be stunned with the the size of the deity. Also, within the sanctum sanctorum, to the
right of Perumal there is a small enclosure where Thrivikrama in the form of Aadhiseshan which is
famous for ragu, kethu dosham.

Pooja Vidhanam
In the previous newsletter, we learnt a bit about the basic principles behind Pooja. Let us continue on
the same path, and understand what should be done and what should not be done.
Do the Puja anyway you can, with devotion and love for Lord in your heart.
God out of His mercy will overlook all the shortcomings of men if they pursue the path of devotion with
fervour. At the end of worship, daily or occasional, a prayer is offered to God not to mind the defects
while chanting the mantras or adopting the procedures or for forgetting to do some duties out of
ignorance.
The Almighty is compassionate enough to ignore such errors. Thus, mercy being His chief trait, a
devotee need not be concerned with minor defects if his endeavour is absolutely sincere but the
enjoined duties should not be abandoned.
yasya smR^ityaa cha naamnoktyaa tapaH puujaa kriyaadishu |
nyuunaM sampuurNataaM yaati sadyo vandey tam.h achyutam.h ||
This shloka will take care of any shortcomings in the puja procedure.
In any Puja, you basically treat the God as a very respected guest who is coming to your house, and give
him a great welcome and treat. In the modern style, this is comparable to any grand party that is
organized for a celebration/party.


water (phalodaka), water of gold or jewels (hiraNyodaka, ratnodaka)

sandle paste for the body
vastrayugmam: two pieces of clothe to wear
yajnopaveeta: sacred thread
akshata:
unbroken decorated rice offered.

anga pujaa: each organ is being thought of and flowers offered to them
pushpa pujaa: on each of his/her various names, a veriety of flowers are offered
patra pujaa: likewise with leaves of different plants.
aShTottara pujaa: 108 names which are very special to the deity are uttered
If possible, sahasranaama puja: 1008 names of the deity

All these offer you the increased concentration and deeper going into the one deity you are worshipping
now.



















dhuupa: agarbatti or incense sticks
diipa: light
naivedya: offer 5 to 21 variety of preparations
hastaprakshalana: wash hands
karodvarthana: apply water and gandha to hands
paniiya: drinking water
phalam or mahaaphalam: fruits (which symbolize all fruits of our actions)
taambuula: paan for digestion
mangala aarati: wishing well and show aarati- asking for light of knowledge
pradakshiNaa: for removal of all sins of aeons
namaskaaram: total surrender
praarthana: prayers (here you say why you called and why you did the puuja)
kshamaapana: apoalogies for mistakes
braahmaNa suvaasini: represent living deities
visarjana puuja: leaving them
arghya pradaanam: offering arghya by those who fasted and those who came late or those like
ladies of the house who could not participate in the pujas because of other works, can now get
full merit by offering arghya which is equivalent to whole puja.
Krishnarpanam: Offer all the pujas and their fruits back to the Lord.

All shlokas basically say what the subtitle means and with lot of various stuti or praise.
The shlokas also treat the deity as all powerful, and often narrate some portion of his/or her story or
describe physical or other attributes.

We are pleased to present this second edition of our Periva Forum newsletter, dedicated to spreading the message and teachings of Sri Maha Periva. Within the last one month, our forum has seen a net addition of close to 200 new members. So, we take the opportunity to welcome all our new members once again, and request all of you to spread the word around about this Forum and the website www.periva.org – which are aimed at bringing together all the devotees of Sri Maha Periva. We would also like to mention about the arrival of few senior, respected members to our Forum. One is Sri Srinivasan of Pune (cnu.pne in the forum), who has been posting excellent images and articles of Paramacharya and the other is Sri P R Ramachander, who is adored for his tremendous contribution to the field of translation of Slokas, Stotras and Kritis. Their presence in this Forum will further embellish the great divine experiences of our members. The kind of interactions on the Forum and the quality of readership/responses has improved tremendously, and we are seeing very active participation by members on the Forum, which is really satisfying. We had some great personal interactions with a few members where they have volunteered to identify few more individuals with touching personal experiences, which have never been shared elsewhere. Some of our members have come forward to contribute articles to the newsletter and one such article from Sri R Balaji is included in this edition. We welcome other contributors also to take part in the upcoming editions. The great men who produced the works on Dharmasastra didn't have a trace of self-interest in them and had nothing but the thought of the happiness of all creatures. These treatises are the authority on which dharma is founded. You find the form of things, the image, with your eyes; you perceive sound with your ears; you know dharma with the help of Dharmasastra. The Vedas (Sruti) are the root of all dharma. After Sruti comes Smrti. The latter consists of the "notes" based on Smrti. It is the same as Dharmasastra. Another guide for the dharma is the example of great men. The Puranas provide an answer to how great men conducted themselves. Then there is sistacara to guide us, the life of virtuous people of noble character. Not everybody's conduct can be a guide to us. The individual whose life is an example for the practice of dharma must have faith in the sastras and must live in accordance with their ordinances. Besides, he must be free from desire and anger. The conduct of such men is sistacara. Another authority or guide is what we know through our conscience in a state of transparency. In matters of the Self, of dharma and religion, the Vedas are in the forefront as our guide. Next come the dharmasastras. Third is the conduct of the great sages of the past. Fourth is the example of the virtuous people of our own times. Conscience comes last in determining dharma. Now everything has become topsy-turvy. People give importance first to their conscience and last to the Vedas. We must consult our conscience only as a last resort when we have no other means of knowing what is dharma with reference to our actions. For private circulation only Page 4 of 19

Conscience is fit to be only a witness(saksi), not to be a judge. A witness often gives false evidence. The mind, however, doesn't tell an untruth - indeed it knows the truth of all things. " There is no deceit that is hidden from the heart(mind), " says Auvvai. Conscience may be regarded as a witness. But nowadays it is brought in as a judge also in dharmic matters. As a witness it will give us a true report of what it sees or has seen. But on the basis of it we cannot give on what is just with any degree of finality. "What I think is right, " everybody would try to satisfy himself thus about his actions if he were to be guided only by his conscience. How can this be justified as the verdict of dharma? We often hear people say, "I will act according to what my conscience tells me. " This is not a right attitude. All at once your conscience cannot be given the place of a judge. It is only when there is no other way open to you that you may tell your mind: "You have seen everything as a witness. Now tell me your opinion. " The mind belongs to each one of us as individuals. So it cannot be detached from our selfish interests. The place it has in one's personal affairs cannot be given to it in matters of religion. On questions of dharma the opinion of sages alone is valid, sages who were concerned with universal welfare and who transcended the state of the individual concerned with his own mind [or with himself]. We are only presenting a few from the hundreds available on our Forum. Experience # 1 – If everyone becomes a Jnaani When Sri Periyaval was camping at Orirukkai, a foreigner came to India. He wanted a ticket from Delhi to Mumbai. He was not able to get it. So he took the flight to Madras. When he came out of Meenambakkam he wondered where to go. He asked the taxi driver, "Is there any self-realized leader here?". The taxi man replied, "The Sankaracharya Swami of Kanchipuram is here." What a wonder you have come in the morning time? Who is near you? Your granddaughter? What name?" Meenakshi Paatti said, "Periyavaa! I am coming to the maTham to have your darshan for ever so many years. Till today I haven't informed SwamigaL about me. There was no such opportunity. But then, it has come now. This girl standing by my side is my granddaughter born through my daughter. Since she was born in this town, we named her Kamakshi. A little girl came to Periyaval and submitting a note-book claimed to have written the Rama Nama a lakh times. She was given a gold coin. A practice was followed Sri Matha in those days. A silver coin was given to those who wrote the Rama Nama twelve thousand and five hundred times, and a gold coin to those who wrote the Rama Nama one lakh times. This practice had been introduced to inspire children and housewives to write the Divine Name in their free time. Many wrote Rama Nama with sincere devotion and submitting their note books went home with the silver or gold coin given in blessing. The coin would be placed in the puja and worshipped. Newsletter of Kanchi Periva Forum Vol 2 © www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org The essence of Vedas (Excerpts from our Periva’s discourses, compiled by Subi Anna, Chicago) In the first newsletter of the Kanchi Periva Forum Vol.1/May2012, we presented on page 9 “A short story of Vedas” as told by Periva. Kanchi Periva has talked a lot about the essence of Vedas. In this article, we are just highlighting a few of his important observations. A common question that is frequently asked by many people is: What is the essence of Vedas and what do they really teach us? Jagadguru Periva answers this question in very simple terms and in a manner easily understandable by anyone. "The principle on which the Vedic religion is founded," observes the Sage of Kanchi, "is that a man must not live for himself alone but serve all mankind." Periva goes on to say: “All Vedas have one common goal though there are differences among their adherents. What is the goal? It is the well-being of the entire world and all creatures living in it, and the uplift of the Self of each one of us and its everlasting union with the Ultimate Reality. We may take pride in the Vedas for another reason also. They do not point to a single way and proclaim, "This alone is the path" nor do they affirm, "This is the only God" with reference to their own view of the Supreme Being. Instead, they declare that, if one adheres to any path with faith or worships any deity with devotion, one will be led towards the Truth. The scripture of no other religion speaks thus of the many paths to liberation. On the contrary, each of them insists that the way shown by it alone will lead to liberation. The Vedas alone give expression to the exalted view that different people may take different paths to discover the one and only Truth. The Vedas reveal the One Truth to us in the form of many deities. Vedas form the one scripture as the source common to the different sects and schools of thought in the Hindu religion.” "The Vedas hold out," declares the Paramaguru, “the ideal of liberation here itself. That is their glory. Other religions hold before people the ideal of salvation after a man's departure for another world." To repeat, the ultimate teaching of the Vedic religion is liberation here and now. After all, what is the purpose of any religion? Our Acharya answers this question too: "If an individual owing allegiance to a religion does not become a jnanin (knowledgeable one) with inward experience of the truth of the Supreme Being, what does it matter whether that religion does exist or does not?" The Vedas that constitute the scripture common to all and which reveal the Godhead that is common to us also teach us how to lead our life, and- this is important- they do us the ultimate good by showing us in the end the way to become that very Godhead ourselves. All sects, all schools of our religion, have their origin in them. The root is one but the branches are many. The Vedas are the source not only of various divisions of Hinduism, all the religions of the world may be traced back to them. It is our bounden duty to preserve them for all time to come with their glory undiminished. Critics call this Dharma ritual-ridden without realizing that the rituals have a higher purpose, that of disciplining you, cleansing your consciousness, and preparing you for the inward journey. In a word, chitta - suddhi is the means to a higher end. From work we must go to worklessness. Author’s Note: My work is primarily concerned with providing brief compilations of Periva's discourses in Tamil at various times and forums. The English translations that I provide are primarily intended for the benefit of those who do not speak, read or understand Tamil. Let us continue our journey in to the rich secrets of science embedded in our Upanishad. As earlier, we shall draw on the resources offered by www.VedaRahasya.net. Garbha Upanishad (Continued…) The formation of the embryo and its stages of development: On a perfect day and on the uniting of the male and female reproductive fluids, after the lapse of one night, the embryo is in a mixed (semi-fluid) state. After seven nights from thereon, it takes the shape of a bubble formed out of water. At the end of a fortnight, it takes the shape of a solid lump. It gets solidified and hardened at the end of one month. In two months, the head takes form. At the end of three months, the legs and foot are formed. And by the fourth month, the wrist, stomach and the hip, waist etc are formed. During the fifth month, the spine and the adjoining bones get shaped. The Mouth, Nose, Eyes and the Ears are all formed during the sixth month. In the seventh month, life or the jivan enters the body shaped so far. By the eighth month, it attains full shape and gets fulfilled with all other remaining parts. If the potency of the father (the male) is stronger than the mother, it becomes a male and vice-versa. If the potency of both the father and the mother are equal with no pulling force in either, it becomes a napumsaka. (neither a male nor a female) It is born as a blind or as a deaf or dumb or short or with other deficiency due to any mental confusion during the period of pregnancy. If the male reproductive fluid is split because of the air moving around in the body, twins are born. When the body comprised of the five natural forces acquires intelligence by the infusion of the jivan (or the soul), it also acquires the five intellectual organs and the brain, which enables the jivan to distinguish between different forms of objects and tastes. Having obtained this intelligence, the jivan immediately starts contemplating on the eternal syllable “OM”. Once he digests the essence of the same, he understands the fact that the eight basic forces (five sense organs, the mind, intellect and ego) and their sixteen variants belong to the soul or the jivan residing in the body. Whatever is consumed or drunk by the mother passes through the nerves dovetailed with the child’s to the jivan, which is satisfied with such feed. It is during the ninth month that all the sense organs and intellect organs attain completeness. And during this time, the jivan is reminded of its previous birth and it realizes all the good and bad deeds it committed during such previous birth. For private circulation only Page 11 of 19

Newsletter of Kanchi Periva Forum Vol 2 © www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Thus thinks the jivan: “By me thousands of birth points (vagina) have been seen; various foods have been tasted; and innumerable times mother’s milk has been drunk (to convey that the jivan had various mothers during its earlier births). I have born and died again and again.” “All my near and dear (of earlier births) for whom I performed various actions (in earlier births), whether good or bad, have enjoyed the benefits of my actions and have left me all alone. I am left behind all alone. “ “Once I come out of this birth source (vagina), I am going to surrender myself to the destroyer of all sins and the Salvation provider – Maheswara, also called as Naaraayana (or the Supreme Being called by various names). I am going to chant his name and other mantras to destroy all my sins carried from my earlier births.” “Once I come out of this birth source, I am going to practice the Gnaana Yoga (the pursuit of knowledge) strictly to destroy all my sins and to release myself from the bondings of all actions in this materialistic world. Once I come out of this birth source, I am going to contemplate on this Supreme Divine Brahman.” – These are the thoughts of the jivan during the time it remains in the womb. However, when he reaches the birth source (vagina) and comes out of it with great difficulty on to the earth, he is inflicted with the illusory force (Maya) created by Vishnu and immediately forgets all the previous births and the deeds performed therein. The temple is about 200 meters from the Kamakshi amman temple. This is a temple of 4 divya desams within a single temple complex. Apart from the main deity of Ulagalanda Perumal, there are three other deities in the same complex which were in different places nearby. Details of the original temple, Sthala Vruksham and Pushkarani are not known excepting the informations from the Azhwar’s pasurams. Thiru Neeragam: This is a small shrine in the northern praharam. Sri Jagadeesa Perumal and Neelamangala Valli Thayar are the main deities. Only the Utsava Vigraham is present and the whereabout of the moolavar vigraham and the original temple are not known. The Theertham here is known as Akrura theertham and the Vimanam Jagadeeswara vimanam. Thirukkaragam: This shrine is also located in the praharam of Ulagalandha Perumal Temple. The Utsava moorthy is Sri Karunakara Perumal and the thayar is Padamamani Nachiyar. Details of the original temple, Sthala Vruksham and Pushkarani are not known excepting the fact from the Thirumangai Azhwar’s pasurams that the main deity is in standing posture. The Theertham is Akraya theertham and Vimanam is Vamana vimanam. Thiru Karavanam: This is another divya desam shrine in the praharam of Ulagalandha Perumal temple. Details of the original temple, Sthala Vruksham and Pushkarani are not known excepting the fact from the Thirumangai Azhwar’s pasurams that the main deity is Thiru Kalvar in a standing posture and the Thayar is Kamalavalli Nachiyar. Only the Utsava moorthy is present. The Theertham is Gowrithadakam and the Vimanam is Pushkala Vimanam. Thiru Ooragam: Significance: The main deity is imposing 35 feet height and 24 feet width Location: Near Kamakshi Amman temple Main deity: Trivikrama called Ulagalandha Perumal and Aranaravalli Nachiyar in different shrines. Legend: During Thrivikrama avathara, Vishnu asked for 3 steps of land from King Mahaballi. Mahabali agreed to give and for one step of Vishnu, Mahabali was already under the feet of Vamana and was unable to get the full dharshan of Trivikrama. He penanced here to have a full dharshan and Trivikrama reappeared in front of him and even then he was not able to see the complete form. Per his request Thrivikrama in the form of Aadhiseshan is present in the same temple. Temple: The main deity Ulagalandha Perumal is magnificent in size with His left leg lifted up to sky. Everyone will be stunned with the the size of the deity. Also, within the sanctum sanctorum, to the right of Perumal there is a small enclosure where Thrivikrama in the form of Aadhiseshan which is famous for ragu, kethu dosham. Let us continue on the same path, and understand what should be done and what should not be done. Do the Puja anyway you can, with devotion and love for Lord in your heart. God out of His mercy will overlook all the shortcomings of men if they pursue the path of devotion with fervour. At the end of worship, daily or occasional, a prayer is offered to God not to mind the defects while chanting the mantras or adopting the procedures or for forgetting to do some duties out of ignorance. The Almighty is compassionate enough to ignore such errors. Thus, mercy being His chief trait, a devotee need not be concerned with minor defects if his endeavour is absolutely sincere but the enjoined duties should not be abandoned. yasya smR^ityaa cha naamnoktyaa tapaH puujaa kriyaadishu | nyuunaM sampuurNataaM yaati sadyo vandey tam.h achyutam.h || This shloka will take care of any shortcomings in the puja procedure. In any Puja, you basically treat the God as a very respected guest who is coming to your house, and give him a great welcome and treat. In the modern style, this is comparable to any grand party that is organized for a celebration/party.                 dhyaana: we first comtemplate whom to invite aahvaahana: we telephone and invite aasana: when they arrive give them place to sit down arghyaM: offer water to wash hands paadyam: offer water to wash feet aachamanam: offer some water(or paanakam) to drink gudopahaara: some thing to eat - light snacks snaanam: take him to bath (you chant shlokas telling the mahimaa of the god/goddess) panchamrita: 5 nectars are selected to give bath; as well as waters of various tiirthas and fruit water (phalodaka), water of gold or jewels (hiraNyodaka, ratnodaka) gandha: sandle paste for the body vastrayugmam: two pieces of clothe to wear yajnopaveeta: sacred thread akshata: unbroken decorated rice offered. parimala dravya: scents aabharaNa: ornaments pushpani: flowers For private circulation only Page 14 of 19

Newsletter of Kanchi Periva Forum Vol 2 © www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org   maala: garland pratiShThaapana: make him/her sit on the aasana; Having done the basic welcome, you should proceed to attend to him further      anga pujaa: each organ is being thought of and flowers offered to them pushpa pujaa: on each of his/her various names, a veriety of flowers are offered patra pujaa: likewise with leaves of different plants. aShTottara pujaa: 108 names which are very special to the deity are uttered If possible, sahasranaama puja: 1008 names of the deity All these offer you the increased concentration and deeper going into the one deity you are worshipping now.                  dhuupa: agarbatti or incense sticks diipa: light naivedya: offer 5 to 21 variety of preparations hastaprakshalana: wash hands karodvarthana: apply water and gandha to hands paniiya: drinking water phalam or mahaaphalam: fruits (which symbolize all fruits of our actions) taambuula: paan for digestion mangala aarati: wishing well and show aarati- asking for light of knowledge pradakshiNaa: for removal of all sins of aeons namaskaaram: total surrender praarthana: prayers (here you say why you called and why you did the puuja) kshamaapana: apoalogies for mistakes braahmaNa suvaasini: represent living deities visarjana puuja: leaving them arghya pradaanam: offering arghya by those who fasted and those who came late or those like ladies of the house who could not participate in the pujas because of other works, can now get full merit by offering arghya which is equivalent to whole puja. Krishnarpanam: Offer all the pujas and their fruits back to the Lord. All shlokas basically say what the subtitle means and with lot of various stuti or praise. The shlokas also treat the deity as all powerful, and often narrate some portion of his/or her story or describe physical or other attributes.
