Subverting can be defined as going against the ‘normal’ codes and
conventions of a specific genre format in relation to a media product. In this
case this is our actual A2 production video Oh No.
 Male characters (Pimpin Curley and were used in comparison to female.
This is because of our audience research we have been given enhancing
feedback from certain audiences that Female characters are seen to be
portrayed as ‘weak’ within such an explicit rap and hip-hop music video.
 Male characters are seen to be physically capable and strong.This view is
conveyed by most of our audiences research and feedback we the team
have received.
 9 out of 10 of our male audience answered this within our surveys.(
Confidentiality was kept as they said not to reveal their identity). As such
we have made this crucial change and subverted the convention of
having females playing any role.And have made our video male-
dominated. However, there were disputes among our female survey
answerers.As 2 out of 10 females thought women looked ‘strong’ as well
within the survey. Even though the overall answers male was the
strongest answer in the end. Due to the sheer answers from males.This
had to be changed.
 Locations such as urban broke down unclean streets
had be used.The majority clean rich streets had to be
subverted with this. As most of our audience feedback
from primary research unstructured interviews have
expressed their personal thoughts and opinions.The
overall message was that run down dirty streets looks
‘dangerous’ and cool, from the majority audiences
perspective.Whilst in contrast, rich streets don’t look
‘hard’ if you have a lot.We have subverted the normal
convention that we were going to use a lot of rich
street’s.With a lot of run down urban streets and a
little amount of rich streets.
Props such as baseball bats had to be subverted with empty hands.
The reason why we have decided to do this is because of safety precautions and
hazards to other people around us. As well as due to the illegality and law put in
place we had to remove this item. As our crew members did not want to take up
a fine or be prosecuted in any way by the judiciary. If it gets to this case.

Changing, Subverting and Removing Codes and Conventions within Oh No

  • 1. Subverting can be defined as going against the ‘normal’ codes and conventions of a specific genre format in relation to a media product. In this case this is our actual A2 production video Oh No.
  • 2.  Male characters (Pimpin Curley and were used in comparison to female. This is because of our audience research we have been given enhancing feedback from certain audiences that Female characters are seen to be portrayed as ‘weak’ within such an explicit rap and hip-hop music video.  Male characters are seen to be physically capable and strong.This view is conveyed by most of our audiences research and feedback we the team have received.  9 out of 10 of our male audience answered this within our surveys.( Confidentiality was kept as they said not to reveal their identity). As such we have made this crucial change and subverted the convention of having females playing any role.And have made our video male- dominated. However, there were disputes among our female survey answerers.As 2 out of 10 females thought women looked ‘strong’ as well within the survey. Even though the overall answers male was the strongest answer in the end. Due to the sheer answers from males.This had to be changed.
  • 3.  Locations such as urban broke down unclean streets had be used.The majority clean rich streets had to be subverted with this. As most of our audience feedback from primary research unstructured interviews have expressed their personal thoughts and opinions.The overall message was that run down dirty streets looks ‘dangerous’ and cool, from the majority audiences perspective.Whilst in contrast, rich streets don’t look ‘hard’ if you have a lot.We have subverted the normal convention that we were going to use a lot of rich street’s.With a lot of run down urban streets and a little amount of rich streets.
  • 4. Props such as baseball bats had to be subverted with empty hands. The reason why we have decided to do this is because of safety precautions and hazards to other people around us. As well as due to the illegality and law put in place we had to remove this item. As our crew members did not want to take up a fine or be prosecuted in any way by the judiciary. If it gets to this case.
