6 Tricks to Overcome Your Fear of the Dentist

  1. 1. 6Tricks to Your Fear of Overcome theDentistBy Kami Hoss
  2. 2. 1. Let the dental team know. If you experience anxiety during trips to the dentist, be sure to let the dentist, the hygienists, and any other relevant staff members know of your fears so that they themselves can be prepared while also helping to minimize your fears.
  3. 3. 2. Use the Buddy System. Whenever you're able, bring someone along with you on your trips to the dentist so that you have someone there for emotional support. Having a person you know and trust with you can help assuage your fears.
  4. 4. 3. Watch some TV. Most dental exam rooms have a TV somewhere in the room, usually visible from the dental chair. Talk to your dentist and see if, during your appointment, you can switch the TV to your favorite station or see if you can bring something in to watch that will distract you from what's happening in the room.
  5. 5. 4. Talk your way through it. For many people, their anxiety about the dentist stems from their fear of not knowing what's going on during the procedures. Talk to the dental staff ahead of time about walking you through each step of the process, explaining things before and while they do them.
  6. 6. 5. Be prepared. Minimize the terror that comes with visiting the dentist by doing your part, throughout the rest of the year, to take great care of your teeth so that when the time comes to visit the dentist, the cleaning and work that needs to be done will be minimized.
  7. 7. 6. Explore sedation options. If all else fails, for people whose phobia of the dentist is too much for them to handle, there are sedation dentistry options for those whose fears are standing in the way of their health. Consult your dentist to learn if sedation dentistry is right for you.
