  2. 2. Ernest Rutherford,s parents were James and Martha. Ernest was fourth oftwelve children.In 1876 the Rutherford family moved to Fox hill. Rutherford wentto canterbury college and then to Canterbury university from1890-1894.Graduating with a bachelor of arts in 1892, and then with master ofarts in mathematics, mathematical physics and physical science the followingyear. ( At university he was known for a keen rugby player) After graduating,he taught for a few weeks at Christchurch boys but was not a successfulteacher.Ernest Rutherford left New Zealand in 1895 to study at the Cavendishlaboratory in Cambridge, as a research student. He adapted a device he haddeveloped back in New Zealand, using it to detect electro-magnetic waves, andin 1896 succeeded in detecting waves over several hundred meters. In 1898Rutherford took up the post of Professor of Physics at McGill University inMontreal, but returned to New Zealand briefly in 1900 to marry Mary Newton,the daughter of his Christchurch landlady. Their only child, Eileen, was born in1901. !2

  7. 7. he got famous for the spliting of the atom, which lead the first atom bombs. These two bombs "fat man" and "little boy" where dropped on Japan in World War2. !7
