Cleantech trends and business opportunities

  1. 1. CLEANTECH TRENDS AND BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES Kaisa Hernberg, 28 February 2014
  2. 2. CLEANTECH FINLAND MISSION: Linking Finnish cleantech expertise with global demand VISION 2015: Finland positioned globally as a top cleantech expert
  3. 3. End customers Business partners Municipalities Investors Other stakeholders Top 80 Finnish cleantech companies Media Decision makers We connect clients and partners with top cleantech expertise

  5. 5. GLOBAL CLEANTECH MARKET
  6. 6. Global cleantech market is worth approx. EUR 2000 billion Expected to grow to EUR 4000 billion by 2025 Average annual growth since 2007 12 % Source of competiti- veness & growth for companies in a wide range of sectors
  7. 7. GROWTH DRIVERS Industriali- zation • Developing economies face consequences of outsourcing Urbanization • Traffic congestion, air & water pollution, heating, waste  problems need to be solved Regulation • Tighter regulation opens up opportunities for European companies
  8. 8. CASE: CHINA Major environmental problems Ambitious emission reduction targets + big budgets Beautiful Beijing – platform for Finnish-Chinese cleantech collaboration • Energy production & distribution • Buildings & construction • Traffic & transportation • Industry • Air quality monitoring & analysis
  9. 9. EMISSIONS SOURCES IN BEIJING 5,2 milj. Cars, annual registerations growing 20 % Buildings under construction around 180m m2 (2011) Total energy consumption around 490 TWh/a, around 1,7 x whole Finland (2011) Heating energy by district heating (DH) 99 TWh/a (in Helsinki around 35 TWh/a)’ Lenght of DH network 12 000 km Coal consumption around 23 m tonnes /a
  10. 10. BEIJING TARGETS Chinese Central Government will invest in air quality improvement about 1 trillion RMB (125 billion EUR) by 2020 Beijing has the numerical target to reduce emissions by 2 % (SO2, Nox, COD, NH3-N) and used 760 million EUR for energy efficiency and environmental protection just in 2013 For example coal boilers of 44 000 old residences and all coal boilers in central area residence will be replaced Beijing has decided to cut coal consumption from 23.3 million tons in 2012 to 15 million tons (- 35 %) in 2015
  11. 11. WHY IS FINLAND GOOD AT CLEANTECH?
  12. 12. HOWE RANK INTERNATIONALLY #1 EU Eco-innovation scoreboard 2012 #2 Environmental friendliness, Country Brand Index 2011 – 2012 #4 Global Cleantech Index
  13. 13. Finland has a harsh climate with extreme temperature variations and no natural fossil fuels of its own. We have had no choice but to develop efficient methods and alternative energy sources. It’s cold (and hot) out here
  14. 14. It wasn’t always this clean here Finland is rich in natural resources, such as forests, lakes and minerals. In the past we have had problems, including water pollution and low air quality. With persistent long-term efforts and public-private- sector collaboration we have succeeded in protecting our nature – and building cutting-edge expertise in solving environmental problems.
  15. 15. Sources: Statistics Finland; Finland’s Environmental Administration ENVIRONMENTAL LOAD HAS BEEN DETACHED FROM ECONOMIC GROWTH GDP Carbon emissions Euthropic emissions Acidifying emissions index
  16. 16. We invest heavily in cleantech Despite its small size as a country, Finland is a cleantech superpower. Finland’s share of the global GDP is approximately 0.4 %, but our share of the global cleantech market is over 1 %. More than than 1/3 of Finnish public R&D investments are made in cleantech.
  17. 17. FINNISH KEY CLEANTECH AREAS Energy and material efficiency Bioenergy & Biofuels Water treatment & purification Built environment
