  5. 5.  The convictions of Alger Hiss, andJulius and Ethel Rosenberg forspying for the Soviet Union, andthe construction of nuclearweapons by the Soviets usingtechnical secrets obtained throughspying heightened our fears!Alger Hiss (above) was convicted ofespionage in the State Department. Juliusand Ethel Rosenberg (below) wereconvicted of selling atomic secrets to theSoviets. They were put to death!

He was known for hisphrase “I have a list of knowncommunists”. No one eversaw “the list”.
