Learn About Redmond Clay
Redmond Clay is a completely natural bentonite clay, extracted from the earth and brought to
you in its pure, natural state. Redmond Clay is available as a fine powder, pre-hydrated gel, or
in easy-to-swallow capsules.
Redmond Clay™ remains as pure today as it was when the Fremont indians discovered its
uses long ago. As our world returns to more natural lifestyles, more and more people keep
Redmond Clay in their medicine cabinets, first aid kits, and purses. Discover for yourself the
healing benefits of Redmond Clay.
How does Redmond Clay work?
At a molecular level, Redmond has a negative electrical charge, attracting positively charged
toxins. The formation of bentonite resembles tiny business card shapes, with negatively
charged wide surfaces and positively charged edges, providing a surprisingly high surface
area and powerful drawing effect. As most toxins are positively charged, clay naturally rids
the body of toxins as it pulls and holds the toxins into its core.

Hydrated Bentonite Clay exfoliates and firms, resulting in visibly revitalized skin and a
youthful complexion. It has the added benefit of working to draw deeply embedded
impurities and toxins out of the skin's pores. Additionally, calcium bentonite clay has
remarkable cleansing properties that work in conjunction with its high rate of
absorption to provide effective solutions for acne, cellulite, sun damage, stretch marks,
wrinkles, blemishes, and much more.
As a general internal detoxification and cleansing agent, Liquid Bentonite Clay scrapes
and cleans the lining of the colon. As the colon becomes cleaner, its ability to absorb
minerals and other nutrients increases, making the minerals even more bioavailable,
thus giving more energy. The internal use of Liquid Bentonite clay is an excellent and
simple way to do an effective cleanse. Among other benefits, it can reduce body odor,
skin blemishes, and digestive track issues of all sorts.
What is Bentonite Clay?
Bentonite clay is a natural volcanic detoxifier. It is medicinal powdered clay which is
also known as montmorillonite, which derives from deposits of weathered volcanic
ash. Bentonite is one of the most effective natural intestinal detoxifying agents
available and has been recognized as such for centuries by native peoples around the
world. Technically, the clay first adsorbs toxins (heavy metals, free radicals, pesticides),
attracting them to its extensive surface area where they adhere like flies to sticky
paper; then it absorbs the toxins, taking them in the way a sponge mops up a kitchen
counter mess. There is an electrical aspect to bentonite’s ability to bind and absorb
toxins. The clay’s minerals are negatively charged while toxins tend to be positively
charged; hence the clay’s attraction works like a magnet drawing metal shavings. But
it’s even more involved than that.
Once hydrated (combined with water), bentonite has an enormous surface area. A
single quart bottle can represent a total surface area of 960 square yards or 12
American football fields. Bentonite is made of a great number of tiny platelets, with
negative electrical charges on their flat surfaces and positive charges on their edges.
Bentonite Clay Essentials contains 71 trace and ultra-trace minerals, including many
that are probably unknown to most consumers, such as ruthenium, tellurium, and
thulium. Trace minerals enable the body to absorb nutrients- they are the bonding
agents in and between you and food.
How Can Bentonite Clay Be Used?
Bentonite is used in pharmaceuticals, medical and cosmetics markets. Bentonite is
used as a filler in pharmaceutical drugs, and due to its absorption-adsorption
capabilities, it allows paste formation. Bentonite is used in industrial protective
creams, wet compresses, and anti-irritant lotions for eczema. In medicine, Bentonite is
used as an antidote in heavy metal poisoning. Personal care products such as mud
packs, baby powder, sunburn paint, and face creams may contain bentonite. Bentonite
is not a mineral but a commercial name for montmorillonite, the active mineral in
many medicinal clays and which comes from weathered volcanic ash. This name
derives from Montmorillon, France, where the medicinal mineral was first identified.
Sometimes mineralogists use the term smectite instead to describe the same
substance. Bentonite minerals are derived from an ancient seabed formation in Utah;
according to geologists, the clay formed when a layer of volcanic ash fell into what
was, long ago, a shallow inland sea. As the ash filtered through the seawater, it
collected pure minerals, forming a layer of highly mineralized clay. The best way to
drink clay is on an empty stomach, or at least an hour before or after a meal or
immediately before sleeping at night.
How is it Manufactured?
Bentonite is usually quarry mined from deposits that can range anywhere from 100
feet to several thousand feet. This depends on the health and vitality of the land it is
processed from and how far a producer will go to find the right clay with the proper
characteristics and consistency. From here it is mined from the earth and brought out
into the sun to remove excess water and moisture and, to make it easier to work with.
After the initial drying begins the final transformation. It gets processed (ground) with
huge hydraulic crushers and it then goes through the final process of micronization, or
"fine granulating". This is usually done with the assistance of sophisticated and
expensive granulators. Upon completion of this final process it gets inspected by a
quality control team and is sent off for consumer use. This information has not been
evaluated by the Food and drug Administration. This information is not intended to
diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
Why does Redmond Clay work?
How does a simple product like Redmond Clay work in so many different ways? We hear
that question a lot and have spent years researching the answers. Much of the answer lies in
understanding four key areas that give clay the ability to influence our health. These areas are
adsorption, absorption, pH level, and trace minerals.
Adsorption
Adsorption isn’t the kind of word you hear every day, but it is key to Redmond Clay’s ability to
help your body rid itself of toxins.
At a molecular level, the formation of bentonite resembles tiny business card shapes with the
wide surfaces having a negative charge and the thin edges having a positive charge. Nature
hates a lonely ionic bond, so each negatively charged ion seeks to satisfy its bond by pairing
with a substance carrying a positive ionic charge. As luck would have it, many toxins, heavy
metals, and free radicals carry a positive charge. The negative ions in Redmond Clay are eager
to attach to these toxins, swapping negative ions for positive, and creating a bond that keeps
the toxin and clay together in suspension until the body eliminates the pair together.
If you’re a visual thinker, it’s a reasonably accurate metaphor to imagine Redmond Clay as a
magnet, and toxins as little bits of metal. Once the two become paired, it’s simple for your
body to dispose of the magnet, and the metal bits along with it.
Absorption
If adsorption functions like a magnet, absorption functions like a sponge–it’s a slower and
less selective process, but other elements in the gut become assimilated by clay, allowing the
body to rid itself of potentially harmful material after absorption occurs. Montmorillonite
clays like Redmond Clay are the only clays with the ability to absorb as well as adsorb, which
is why they have become preferred for dietary use. Because clay is so absorbent, when using it
internally, it is advisable to do so a couple of hours apart from traditional medications.
Absorption is the key to Redmond Clay’s unusual ability to draw infection and toxins out of
the body when applied externally on sores, scrapes, or other problem areas.
pH
A pH level measures the acidity of a solution. Every substance has a pH level; solutions with a
pH less than 7 are said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are considered
alkaline. With a pH level of 8.7-9.8, Redmond Clay is quite alkaline and has proven effective
in neutralizing heartburn, reflux, and upset stomachs. Recent research has renewed interest
in the internal pH levels of our bodies. Our bodies carefully regulate the pH level in our blood,
and there is preliminary evidence suggesting that drinking alkaline mineral water may help
prevent bone loss. Many naturopathic professionals have started recommending high alkaline
diets as a means of improving long-term health, and Redmond Clay customers report a
variety of benefits with regular consumption.
Minerals
Minerals are essential to the chemical reactions that keep our bodies healthy, and our bodies
can absorb but not create minerals on their own. As modern diets have become less mineral-
dense, many health-conscious people have turned to trace mineral supplements to keep their
bodies functioning properly.
How do people use Redmond Clay?
We call our clay the clay of 1,000 uses because our customers keep sharing new uses with us
all the time. Most commonly, people use Redmond Clay either internally or externally.
Internal Uses
People have used bentonite clay when suffering from occasional diarrhea, constipation,
heartburn, stomachache, acid indigestion, acid reflux, and other digestive problems. As
trends move toward naturopathic and homeopathic medicine, more people include Redmond
Clay capsules with their daily supplements, or drink clay water because of its drawing ability,
highly alkaline pH, and natural minerals.

External Uses
Hydrated Redmond Clay can be applied externally as a poultice on cuts, bruises, insect bites,
bee stings, boils, rashes, achy joints, acne, and burns.

CLAY QUESTIONS ANSWERED:
Is it safe to store clay in plastic containers?
Last week, a customer wrote to ask us the best way to store hydrated Redmond Clay. Is it okay
to store clay in plastic containers? It’s a question we hear often. Here’s the answer—along
with a quick look at the reasons people ask.
Recycled Information
Most of what you’ve read about healing clays comes from a single source: A book called Our
Earth, Our Cure by French naturopath Raymond Dextreit. Translated into English in 1974,
the book is a gold mine of information about clay’s many uses—so good that each of the books
(and, eventually, blog posts) about clay since then have borrowed heavily from Dextreit’s
work.
Some books even copy entire pages verbatim, including the section when Dextreit talks about
the best way to store clay. In this section (pictured below in two books, published 27 years
apart) Dextreit suggests that hydrated clay shouldn’t be stored in plastic.
Not all plastics are created equal
Redmond Clay, dry or hydrated, can be stored safely in the right kind of plastic. Yep, we know
it contradicts Dextreit’s 1970s advice, but plastics are much more stable than they were 38
years ago.
Redmond Clay approved plastic meets the following standards:
PET plastic, designated by the number 2: Used to store clay powder.
LDPE plastic, designated by the number 4: Used for our ready-to-use, pre-hydrated clay
products. (Including Earthpaste.)
We use only ―virgin‖ plastic. We love recycling, but for hydrated clay, we need to absolutely
confident we know we’re getting just the right plastic. To be safe, we use only virgin, BPA-free
plastic for our tubes. (Don’t worry, you can still recycle our tubes after you’re done!)
What about metal?
Dextreit’s original advice holds true: We don’t store clay in metal containers, and we don’t
think you should, either.
What about the Aluminum in Redmond Clay?
Aluminum is one of the most abundant minerals on earth, accounting for roughly 8% of our
planet’s crust. Every plant and animal alive contains a trace amount of aluminum, which has
been associated with healthy cellular function and metabolic processes. Of course, recent
studies linking aluminum to mental degeneration has left a lot of people wondering whether
the FDA will change the ―generally recognized as safe‖ label that has been applied to
aluminum-based food additives. In the mean time, many people have concerns about
aluminum in products they use, from antiperspirant and makeup to pickles.
Two side of aluminum
Like other metal elements, a tiny amount of aluminum is required to keep our body’s systems
working properly—nickel for our heart, iron for blood, copper for nerves, and so on. The
crucial distinction is the source and form of the elements: you could ingest aluminum in
natural spring water, or you could force down a bit of aluminum foil.
Your body can tell the difference, and won’t treat the sources of aluminum equally. It’s a silly
example, maybe, but the basic idea is that our bodies recognize a chemical difference between
heavy-metal aluminum, which could be absorbed by our system and potentially lead to health
issues, and the naturally-occurring aluminum found in montmorillonite/bentonite clay.
Aluminum in bentonite clay
Unlike aluminum additives found in some products, experts agree that the natural aluminum
in bentonite clay cannot be absorbed by our bodies. The aluminum carries such a high
negative charge, it is actually central to the beneficial functions of clay—without it, the
bentonite molecule that seems almost magical wouldn’t be able to do its job. (If we’re losing
you, head over and learn how Redmond Clay works.)
Why aluminum is safe in clay?
We wandered into some confusing territory there for a minute, so let’s regroup for those of
you who like skipping to the end. Aluminum occurs naturally in our bodies, and in Redmond
Clay. As with everything else we put in our bodies, the source and form of aluminum makes a
big difference in how our bodies use it.
The molecular structure of bentonite, especially the high negative charge of the aluminum,
makes it impossible for the aluminum to leach into our systems. Instead, the aluminum
leaves our bodies the old-fashioned way—along with the positively-charged toxins and
impurities that the clay has bonded to. At a chemical level, much of clay’s healing benefit
depends on aluminum.

Is Redmon Clay a calcium Bentonite Clay?
This is one of the most common questions people have after reading Living Clay. Is Redmond
Clay is a calcium bentonite clay?
Why might is matter?
Most clay deposits are high in either sodium (sodium bentonite clay) or calcium (calcium
bentonite clay). Generally speaking, clays that are high in sodium and low in calcium are used
for industrial applications—pond seal, drilling support, etc.—because these clays swell more
than others. The calcium question was probably designed to be sure you choose a clay
intended for human consumption, but before Living Clay was published, no clay experts had
ever focused on the calcium / sodium distinction.
Why might it not matter?
Like most Redmond Clay customers, we trust clay because we’ve seen it improve our lives,
and because we can look back throughout history to see ancient cultures using it internally
and externally. It’s hard to imagine a primitive healer inspecting a ball of medicinal clay and
saying, ―My goodness! This clay has more sodium than calcium! Spit it out!‖ It’s important to
know the source of your clay, but focusing on calcium or sodium may not be as relevant as
you may have read.
So, is Redmond Clay a Calcium Bentonite Clay?
If you’ve read the post up to this point, you’re probably expecting the answer to be no, right?
In fact, Redmond Clay comes from one of the most unique clay deposits discovered so far—
rich in both calcium and sodium. The unique composition is one reason Redmond Clay works
so well in so many ways—the sodium content helps makes it more effective externally, while
still sharing the benefits of taking clay internally.
Redmond Clay is a unique living clay that is high in both calcium and sodium. Of course,
natural products like clay don’t work the same for each person. Redmond Clay has helped
tens of thousands of people, but it may not be the right clay for your body—finding the clay
that works best for you is a personal journey.

MIND BODY AND SOLE
This 10 minute introductory video was taken from a 2 hour 12 min video lecture.
Bentonite Clay is Mother Nature’s pharmacy. It is volcanic ash with all the impurities
burned out leaving pure trace minerals. Clay is a nano crystal of highly charged
electromagnetic energy from the thermodynamic heat of a volcano. It can NOT be
duplicated in a laboratory. Only God can make clay.
Most clays have a high alkaline pH. Clay is homestatic and as such is an adaptogen that
brings balance and equilibrium to the body. A balanced body can heal itself. That is
what the body is designed to do when it isn’t in overload and unable to filter out the
build up of toxins and wastes in the body that begin causing health problems.
Bentonite Clay’s strength lies in its ability to adsorb and absorb, to suck into itself
toxins, chemicals, viruses, molds, and the bad bacteria, hold them captive within the
molecule and carry them out of the body.
The electromagnetic energy of the clay stimulates circulation, bringing blood flow and
oxygen to revitalize cellular repair and awaken latent cell energy.
It seems hard to believe that a simple handful of clay soil can help with so many things
but it really can; in a remarkably short amount of time and with great ease it brings
about swift results. The beauty of clay is it is so safe. The FDA gives Bentonite Clay a
GRAS rating meaning Generally Regarded as Safe.
There is a long recorded history of animals in the wild instinctually seeking and eating
clay to heal themselves. The medicine men of many aboriginal tribes have long used
clay as part of their healing treatments.
The kicker is all clays are different, even within the same family of clays so it is
important to know your clays. The Smectite family of clays is known for healing clays.
Bentonite is a Smectite clay. Redmond Clay is a sodium/calcium bentonite clay.
Albeit all clays have some healing potential, there are a few that are amazingly
stronger than others. Some are good for internal use and others are much better for
external use. A few are exceptional in both areas. Redmond Clay is such a clay…it’s
“pulling” power is very strong, and it is excellent for both internal and external use.
From a gentle internal cleansing to healing wounds in half the time, to stopping Acid
Reflux and intestinal disorders, to stopping food poisoning, to detoxing heavy metals,
to healing burns and insect bites, to mending broken bones rapidly, to relieving
strained muscles, to helping skin rashes, acne and gum problems, to aiding children
with Autism, to expelling internal parasites, to stopping anemia, clay is a natural
replacement to most drugs with no organ damaging negative side effects.
Clay Baths are quickly becoming regarded as a safe and easy way to detox the body
from heavy metals. Besides, they are very relaxing, and the relieve muscle strain and
soreness. Your skin feels heavenly after the bath.
Bentonite, an edible, mineral-rich clay, has been used for centuries to draw toxins
away from intestinal walls while cleansing the colon. Another use for bentonite clay,
which is very timely considering the recent natural and the Fukushima nuclear disaster
in Japan, is adsorption of radiation. Not only does bentonite clay adsorb radiationi
from nuclear fallout, it also adsorbs any kind of radiation.
Bentonite clay is sometimes referred to as “green” healing clay. It is created naturally
from the combination of volcanic ash minerals called montmorillonite and ocean
water. Depending on the source, bentonite clay is loaded with naturally occurring
minerals such as potassium, calcium, and sodium. When bentonite gets wet, it
expands, much like a sponge does.
However, rather than absorbing toxins the way a sponge might, bentonite clay works
more like a magnet. This process is called adsorption, which is spelled with the letter
“d.” Bentonite clay adsorbs because it carries both negative and positive charges on its
surfaces and edges. Toxins are attracted to the bentonite like magnets, bond to the
chemicals in the clay, and are carried out of the body in the small spaces created when
the clay is wet.
According to a 2006 study published in Radiation Protection Dosimetry, which was
performed by a team of scientists led by V. Correcher and entitled “Thermal Stability of
the Thermoluminescence Trap Structure of Bentonite,” bentonite clay was studied
because of its known capabilities to break bond links, form hydrolyzed ions, and redox
reactions. The study documented the “exponential distribution of trapped electrons.”
In another scientific study, bentonite clay was tested to determine its efficacy in
reducing high-energy gamma irradiation of adenine. According to chemists at Duke
University, adenine is one of the most important organic molecules found in the
human body. Adenine is an integral part of human DNA, RNA, and ATP. In this study,
published in Cellular and Molecular Biology in 2002, irradiated adenine recovered
much quicker in systems containing clay than in those which did not contain clay.
Results showed that bentonite clay acts as a surface protector against radiation of
adenine.
Taken orally, bentonite clay is used to detoxify the digestive system, eliminate
intestinal parasites, strengthen the immune system, and fight free radicals. It also
helps remove heavy metals from the body and assists in the process of liver
detoxification. Used externally, bentonite clay is often a main ingredient in
compresses, clay packs, and facial masks.
Redmond Clay is NOT a wonder drug. In fact, it is not a drug at all! It is simply a
natural, “home remedy” that has been used since the early 1900′s for a variety of
medical problems.
When starting the clay internally, go slow! Start with 1/3 tsp daily and drink plenty of
water. During the 2nd week, take 2/3 tsp, working your way up to 1 tsp of clay a day.
This will minimize the “healing crisis” your body will experience as the clay cleans and
detoxes.
Redmond Clay strengthens and supports all the organs and systems of the body,
allowing you to heal yourself, as nature intended. Be patient.
Redmond Clay is a natural substance and as such it works differently for each person.

Review | Earthpaste Natural Toothpaste
FAQs
Earthpaste delivers all the benefits you expect from a toothpaste without any
chemicals or unnatural additives. It’s toothpaste unlike any other you’ve experienced.
Earthpaste is safe to eat. Each ingredient has been used to support healthy systems.
Earthpaste is amazingly natural toothpaste. You’ll see the difference on your brush and
feel the difference in your mouth.
Why did you create Earthpaste?
Because we couldn’t find a toothpaste that we felt good about using for ourselves and
our families that also worked great. Even many natural toothpaste brands have added
things like fluoride, glycerin, foaming agents and chemical preservatives.
What is the problem with fluoride?
When it comes to minerals, form is the key. Many health experts agree that the
sodium fluoride added to water supplies and toothpaste is toxic and should be
avoided. This is why toothpastes with fluoride have a warning advising to call poison
control if more than a small amount is swallowed.
What is the problem with glycerin?
Among other things, glycerin is the base for many liquid soaps and on the body isn’t a
problem. However, in the mouth, glycerin creates a coat or film that won’t rinse away.
Many natural dentists say this glycerin film on teeth can prevent the teeth from being
able to remineralize thereby weakening the teeth.
What is the problem with foaming agents such as SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate)?
Among other things, foaming agents such as SLS are said to have a drying effect on the
mouth which can increase mouth acidity. These chemicals are also known to cause
membrane disruption and trauma in the mouth leading to canker sores.
Why so few ingredients?
Because we believe there is power in nature and in simplicity.
Purified Water, Redmond Clay, Xylitol, Essential Oil (Cinnamon, Wintergreen or
Peppermint), Real Salt, Tea Tree Essential Oil, Menthol (Only in the Wintergreen &
Peppermint varieties).
What does each ingredient do?
• Purified Water: Used to hydrate the clay.
• Food Grade Redmond Clay®: A natural polisher and cleanser that is also
mineral rich and alkaline. • Xylitol: Sweetener and also recommended by many for
tooth health.
• Tea Tree Oil: Anti-bacterial properties, promotes gum health, and bad breath fighter.
• Other Essential Oils: Added for flavor and other health benefits. The current flavors
of Earthpaste are Wintergreen, Peppermint, Cinnamon, and Lemon Twist.
• Menthol: Only contained in the wintergreen and peppermint flavors. Leaves your
mouth feeling fresh and clean.
• Redmond Real Salt®: Enhances flavor and offers anti-bacterial properties
associated with sea salt.
What is the source of Xylitol?
We only source non-GMO certified xylitol that is made from birch and/or corn cobs.
What is the source of essential oils?
The wintergreen and cinnamon essential oils come from Madagascar and Sri Lanka.
The peppermint essential oil comes from Washington. While not certified organic, they
are considered wild-crafted.
Isn’t tea tree oil dangerous?
Like a lot of things these days, there is some debate. We wrote an explanation to help
people understand why we use tea tree oil.
What is the source of menthol in the wintergreen and peppermint?
A lot of companies use synthetic menthol. Not Redmond! Read more information
about our menthol.
Does Earthpaste feel different in the mouth?
Yes. Because Earthpaste contains no foaming agents, it will feel thin in your mouth
compared to foaming toothpastes. However, you will soon realize the foam is
unnecessary.
What is the pH of Earthpaste?
On initial tests the pH has been between 9.6 – 9.7.
Does it really work?
Yes, very well. (But you knew we’d say that!)
Will it whiten my teeth?
We don’t make any specific dental claims in regard to anti-cavity or whitening. The
feedback from customers and oral health professionals has been very positive.
It’s wonderful to finally find a toothpaste we can feel good about using for ourselves
and our family.

What’s In Your Toothpaste?
How Abrasive is Earthpaste?
When we got serious about turning our really-really-natural toothpaste idea into
Earthpaste, we learned a new word: dentifrice. (Well, one or two of us already knew
the word, but the rest of us, the ones who enjoyed normal childhoods, learned it only
recently.) Dentifrice is the technical, old-timey term for any paste or powder used for
cleaning teeth. In other words, it’s toothpaste.
In a hurry? Short answer: Earthpaste has an RDA score of 130.
But if you’re not in a hurry, you should read the post! We speculate on the tooth fairy’s
earning power and explain why toothpaste pH matters.
Every toothpaste, whether you call it dentifrice, or Earthpaste, or bright-blue-sparkly-
gel, goes through standard testing to establish how abrasive it is. The test works more
or less like this: a person wearing rubber gloves and science-lab goggles grabs a human
tooth that has had its enamel stripped away. (Where do all the teeth come from? We
don’t know, but if you’d like to lend realistic detail to your family’s tooth fairy tradition,
there is a tale you could weave there. Business-savvy kids will appreciate knowing the
possible source of the tooth fairy’s revenue.) Anyway, after the tooth fairy (or
someone else) delivers these teeth to the lab and a scientist strips off the enamel, they
zap a tooth with mild neutron irradiation before brushing it using a special toothbrush.
The rinse water contains radiation brushed from the unlucky tooth, which is measured
to arrive at a number called the radioactive dentin abrasion score, or RDA. (Some
people call it relative dentin abrasion. Same thing.) Basically, they’re measuring how
much of the irradiated dentin winds up in the water after brushing with various brands
of toothpaste.
It’s a voluntary program, and some experts have pointed out that RDA scores are
rather pointless without also measuring the effect on enamel. That makes sense, since
we all have enamel on our teeth when we brush, but RDA has become the standard
number, anyway. The American Dental Association recommends dentifrices with RDA
score no higher than 250, but we’ve never seen a brand get anywhere close to that
high. The highest we know is a super-ultra-whitening formula from Colgate, which has
an RDA score of 200. (Plain old baking soda has an RDA of 7.) According to independent
lab testing, Earthpaste has an RDA score of 130, which the lab noted, with all the
excitement you’d expect from a scientific lab, “is typical of dentifrices on the market
today and is well within the accepted limits.”
Some companies have attached a marketing spin to RDA scores, and I suppose you
can’t blame them for trying. You might have heard that lower RDA scores are better for
your teeth, but if you still have enamel protecting the dentin, it seems like a secondary
consideration.
A 2004 study showed that low-pH (acidic) dentifrices did cause “an increase in enamel
abrasion that was greater than might be expected based on the RDA value.” In other
words, if you’re concerned that abrasive toothpaste will affect your enamel, you might
do well to find a toothpaste with a high pH.
Oh, and did we mention that the pH of Earthpaste is right around 9.7? I mean, we
shouldn’t really boast — we just let nature do her job — but that’s pretty darn high!
What brand of Essential Oil is in Earthpaste?
When we started experimenting with Earthpaste, we knew we’d rely on quality
essential oils for natural flavoring and benefits they can bring. It didn’t take long for us
to see that people who love essential oils really love essential oils, and that, for many
of you, brand matters.
For a while, we considered including essential oils by brand — just like we use Real Salt
instead of “sea salt” and Redmond Clay instead of “bentonite clay,” we thought we
might pick the best oils nature has to offer and put their logo on the tube with the
others.
But the research was tricky. We had a hard time telling the difference between really
great marketing and really great oils, so we did a hard thing and took the easy way out:
we stripped away the brand names, took the oils into the lab, and paid attention to the
oils themselves. No labels, no marketing, just essential oils.
In the end, we picked the source that worked best in Earthpaste, and, importantly,
aligned most closely with Redmond’s guiding principles: 100% pure, wild-crafted
essential oils. We believe nature has it right, and we’re happy we didn’t have to
compromise with our essential oils.
I know, you’re still waiting for a brand name, but we’re not going to tell you. We’ll keep
this one to ourselves because of the passion people have for their particular brand of
oils–the marketing messages are so intense, so divisive, and we don’t want to fuel
sales for one brand (“Earthpaste chose our brand! Hooray!”) or upset sales
representatives from brands we don’t use.
Basically, in the battle over essential oil brands, we’re determined to stay neutral. We
tried them all and picked the one that best matches our values and quality standards,
and wound up with amazingly natural toothpaste that you can trust to be as natural as
possible.

ABOUT MINERAL CLAY

  • 1. Compiled by: Jitendra Gajjar Learn About Redmond Clay Redmond Clay is a completely natural bentonite clay, extracted from the earth and brought to you in its pure, natural state. Redmond Clay is available as a fine powder, pre-hydrated gel, or in easy-to-swallow capsules. Redmond Clay™ remains as pure today as it was when the Fremont indians discovered its uses long ago. As our world returns to more natural lifestyles, more and more people keep Redmond Clay in their medicine cabinets, first aid kits, and purses. Discover for yourself the healing benefits of Redmond Clay.
  • 2. How does Redmond Clay work? At a molecular level, Redmond has a negative electrical charge, attracting positively charged toxins. The formation of bentonite resembles tiny business card shapes, with negatively charged wide surfaces and positively charged edges, providing a surprisingly high surface area and powerful drawing effect. As most toxins are positively charged, clay naturally rids the body of toxins as it pulls and holds the toxins into its core. Learn more about why Redmond Clay works » Learn about Redmond Clay by watching short videos online. Each clip is just a few minutes long, and you’ll see for yourself how to prepare and use Redmond Clay. Browse the video library » Hydrated Bentonite Clay exfoliates and firms, resulting in visibly revitalized skin and a youthful complexion. It has the added benefit of working to draw deeply embedded impurities and toxins out of the skin's pores. Additionally, calcium bentonite clay has remarkable cleansing properties that work in conjunction with its high rate of absorption to provide effective solutions for acne, cellulite, sun damage, stretch marks, wrinkles, blemishes, and much more. As a general internal detoxification and cleansing agent, Liquid Bentonite Clay scrapes and cleans the lining of the colon. As the colon becomes cleaner, its ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients increases, making the minerals even more bioavailable, thus giving more energy. The internal use of Liquid Bentonite clay is an excellent and
  • 3. simple way to do an effective cleanse. Among other benefits, it can reduce body odor, skin blemishes, and digestive track issues of all sorts. What is Bentonite Clay? Bentonite clay is a natural volcanic detoxifier. It is medicinal powdered clay which is also known as montmorillonite, which derives from deposits of weathered volcanic ash. Bentonite is one of the most effective natural intestinal detoxifying agents available and has been recognized as such for centuries by native peoples around the world. Technically, the clay first adsorbs toxins (heavy metals, free radicals, pesticides), attracting them to its extensive surface area where they adhere like flies to sticky paper; then it absorbs the toxins, taking them in the way a sponge mops up a kitchen counter mess. There is an electrical aspect to bentonite’s ability to bind and absorb toxins. The clay’s minerals are negatively charged while toxins tend to be positively charged; hence the clay’s attraction works like a magnet drawing metal shavings. But it’s even more involved than that. Once hydrated (combined with water), bentonite has an enormous surface area. A single quart bottle can represent a total surface area of 960 square yards or 12 American football fields. Bentonite is made of a great number of tiny platelets, with negative electrical charges on their flat surfaces and positive charges on their edges. Bentonite Clay Essentials contains 71 trace and ultra-trace minerals, including many that are probably unknown to most consumers, such as ruthenium, tellurium, and thulium. Trace minerals enable the body to absorb nutrients- they are the bonding agents in and between you and food. How Can Bentonite Clay Be Used? Bentonite is used in pharmaceuticals, medical and cosmetics markets. Bentonite is used as a filler in pharmaceutical drugs, and due to its absorption-adsorption capabilities, it allows paste formation. Bentonite is used in industrial protective creams, wet compresses, and anti-irritant lotions for eczema. In medicine, Bentonite is used as an antidote in heavy metal poisoning. Personal care products such as mud packs, baby powder, sunburn paint, and face creams may contain bentonite. Bentonite is not a mineral but a commercial name for montmorillonite, the active mineral in many medicinal clays and which comes from weathered volcanic ash. This name derives from Montmorillon, France, where the medicinal mineral was first identified. Sometimes mineralogists use the term smectite instead to describe the same substance. Bentonite minerals are derived from an ancient seabed formation in Utah; according to geologists, the clay formed when a layer of volcanic ash fell into what was, long ago, a shallow inland sea. As the ash filtered through the seawater, it collected pure minerals, forming a layer of highly mineralized clay. The best way to
  • 4. drink clay is on an empty stomach, or at least an hour before or after a meal or immediately before sleeping at night. How is it Manufactured? Bentonite is usually quarry mined from deposits that can range anywhere from 100 feet to several thousand feet. This depends on the health and vitality of the land it is processed from and how far a producer will go to find the right clay with the proper characteristics and consistency. From here it is mined from the earth and brought out into the sun to remove excess water and moisture and, to make it easier to work with. After the initial drying begins the final transformation. It gets processed (ground) with huge hydraulic crushers and it then goes through the final process of micronization, or "fine granulating". This is usually done with the assistance of sophisticated and expensive granulators. Upon completion of this final process it gets inspected by a quality control team and is sent off for consumer use. This information has not been evaluated by the Food and drug Administration. This information is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Why does Redmond Clay work? How does a simple product like Redmond Clay work in so many different ways? We hear that question a lot and have spent years researching the answers. Much of the answer lies in understanding four key areas that give clay the ability to influence our health. These areas are adsorption, absorption, pH level, and trace minerals. Adsorption Adsorption isn’t the kind of word you hear every day, but it is key to Redmond Clay’s ability to help your body rid itself of toxins. At a molecular level, the formation of bentonite resembles tiny business card shapes with the wide surfaces having a negative charge and the thin edges having a positive charge. Nature hates a lonely ionic bond, so each negatively charged ion seeks to satisfy its bond by pairing with a substance carrying a positive ionic charge. As luck would have it, many toxins, heavy metals, and free radicals carry a positive charge. The negative ions in Redmond Clay are eager to attach to these toxins, swapping negative ions for positive, and creating a bond that keeps the toxin and clay together in suspension until the body eliminates the pair together. If you’re a visual thinker, it’s a reasonably accurate metaphor to imagine Redmond Clay as a magnet, and toxins as little bits of metal. Once the two become paired, it’s simple for your body to dispose of the magnet, and the metal bits along with it.
  • 5. Absorption If adsorption functions like a magnet, absorption functions like a sponge–it’s a slower and less selective process, but other elements in the gut become assimilated by clay, allowing the body to rid itself of potentially harmful material after absorption occurs. Montmorillonite clays like Redmond Clay are the only clays with the ability to absorb as well as adsorb, which is why they have become preferred for dietary use. Because clay is so absorbent, when using it internally, it is advisable to do so a couple of hours apart from traditional medications. Absorption is the key to Redmond Clay’s unusual ability to draw infection and toxins out of the body when applied externally on sores, scrapes, or other problem areas. pH A pH level measures the acidity of a solution. Every substance has a pH level; solutions with a pH less than 7 are said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are considered alkaline. With a pH level of 8.7-9.8, Redmond Clay is quite alkaline and has proven effective in neutralizing heartburn, reflux, and upset stomachs. Recent research has renewed interest in the internal pH levels of our bodies. Our bodies carefully regulate the pH level in our blood, and there is preliminary evidence suggesting that drinking alkaline mineral water may help prevent bone loss. Many naturopathic professionals have started recommending high alkaline diets as a means of improving long-term health, and Redmond Clay customers report a variety of benefits with regular consumption. Minerals Minerals are essential to the chemical reactions that keep our bodies healthy, and our bodies can absorb but not create minerals on their own. As modern diets have become less mineral- dense, many health-conscious people have turned to trace mineral supplements to keep their bodies functioning properly. How do people use Redmond Clay? We call our clay the clay of 1,000 uses because our customers keep sharing new uses with us all the time. Most commonly, people use Redmond Clay either internally or externally. Internal Uses People have used bentonite clay when suffering from occasional diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, stomachache, acid indigestion, acid reflux, and other digestive problems. As trends move toward naturopathic and homeopathic medicine, more people include Redmond

  • 7. How to Give Yourself the Ultimate Facial The Benefits of Using Real, Natural Soap Is Montmorillonite Clay the Same as Bentonite? Should I worry about draining bath clay into my septic system? Proper Storing of Clay Minerals Zone CLAY QUESTIONS ANSWERED: Is it safe to store clay in plastic containers? Last week, a customer wrote to ask us the best way to store hydrated Redmond Clay. Is it okay to store clay in plastic containers? It’s a question we hear often. Here’s the answer—along with a quick look at the reasons people ask. Recycled Information Most of what you’ve read about healing clays comes from a single source: A book called Our Earth, Our Cure by French naturopath Raymond Dextreit. Translated into English in 1974, the book is a gold mine of information about clay’s many uses—so good that each of the books (and, eventually, blog posts) about clay since then have borrowed heavily from Dextreit’s work. Some books even copy entire pages verbatim, including the section when Dextreit talks about the best way to store clay. In this section (pictured below in two books, published 27 years apart) Dextreit suggests that hydrated clay shouldn’t be stored in plastic. Not all plastics are created equal Redmond Clay, dry or hydrated, can be stored safely in the right kind of plastic. Yep, we know it contradicts Dextreit’s 1970s advice, but plastics are much more stable than they were 38 years ago. Redmond Clay approved plastic meets the following standards:
  • 8. PET plastic, designated by the number 2: Used to store clay powder. LDPE plastic, designated by the number 4: Used for our ready-to-use, pre-hydrated clay products. (Including Earthpaste.) We use only ―virgin‖ plastic. We love recycling, but for hydrated clay, we need to absolutely confident we know we’re getting just the right plastic. To be safe, we use only virgin, BPA-free plastic for our tubes. (Don’t worry, you can still recycle our tubes after you’re done!) What about metal? Dextreit’s original advice holds true: We don’t store clay in metal containers, and we don’t think you should, either. What about the Aluminum in Redmond Clay? Aluminum is one of the most abundant minerals on earth, accounting for roughly 8% of our planet’s crust. Every plant and animal alive contains a trace amount of aluminum, which has been associated with healthy cellular function and metabolic processes. Of course, recent studies linking aluminum to mental degeneration has left a lot of people wondering whether the FDA will change the ―generally recognized as safe‖ label that has been applied to aluminum-based food additives. In the mean time, many people have concerns about aluminum in products they use, from antiperspirant and makeup to pickles. Two side of aluminum Like other metal elements, a tiny amount of aluminum is required to keep our body’s systems working properly—nickel for our heart, iron for blood, copper for nerves, and so on. The crucial distinction is the source and form of the elements: you could ingest aluminum in natural spring water, or you could force down a bit of aluminum foil. Your body can tell the difference, and won’t treat the sources of aluminum equally. It’s a silly example, maybe, but the basic idea is that our bodies recognize a chemical difference between heavy-metal aluminum, which could be absorbed by our system and potentially lead to health issues, and the naturally-occurring aluminum found in montmorillonite/bentonite clay. Aluminum in bentonite clay Unlike aluminum additives found in some products, experts agree that the natural aluminum in bentonite clay cannot be absorbed by our bodies. The aluminum carries such a high negative charge, it is actually central to the beneficial functions of clay—without it, the bentonite molecule that seems almost magical wouldn’t be able to do its job. (If we’re losing you, head over and learn how Redmond Clay works.) Why aluminum is safe in clay?
  • 9. We wandered into some confusing territory there for a minute, so let’s regroup for those of you who like skipping to the end. Aluminum occurs naturally in our bodies, and in Redmond Clay. As with everything else we put in our bodies, the source and form of aluminum makes a big difference in how our bodies use it. The molecular structure of bentonite, especially the high negative charge of the aluminum, makes it impossible for the aluminum to leach into our systems. Instead, the aluminum leaves our bodies the old-fashioned way—along with the positively-charged toxins and impurities that the clay has bonded to. At a chemical level, much of clay’s healing benefit depends on aluminum. In the mood for some light reading? Here are some resources about clay and aluminum: The Quest for Nutrition Knowledge CureZone aluminum/bentonite Ask Dr Hull Eyton’s Earth Healthy.net: Aluminum Is Redmon Clay a calcium Bentonite Clay? This is one of the most common questions people have after reading Living Clay. Is Redmond Clay is a calcium bentonite clay? Why might is matter? Most clay deposits are high in either sodium (sodium bentonite clay) or calcium (calcium bentonite clay). Generally speaking, clays that are high in sodium and low in calcium are used for industrial applications—pond seal, drilling support, etc.—because these clays swell more than others. The calcium question was probably designed to be sure you choose a clay intended for human consumption, but before Living Clay was published, no clay experts had ever focused on the calcium / sodium distinction. Why might it not matter? Like most Redmond Clay customers, we trust clay because we’ve seen it improve our lives, and because we can look back throughout history to see ancient cultures using it internally and externally. It’s hard to imagine a primitive healer inspecting a ball of medicinal clay and saying, ―My goodness! This clay has more sodium than calcium! Spit it out!‖ It’s important to know the source of your clay, but focusing on calcium or sodium may not be as relevant as you may have read. So, is Redmond Clay a Calcium Bentonite Clay?
  • 10. If you’ve read the post up to this point, you’re probably expecting the answer to be no, right? In fact, Redmond Clay comes from one of the most unique clay deposits discovered so far— rich in both calcium and sodium. The unique composition is one reason Redmond Clay works so well in so many ways—the sodium content helps makes it more effective externally, while still sharing the benefits of taking clay internally. Redmond Clay is a unique living clay that is high in both calcium and sodium. Of course, natural products like clay don’t work the same for each person. Redmond Clay has helped tens of thousands of people, but it may not be the right clay for your body—finding the clay that works best for you is a personal journey. • 14. Redmond Clay MIND BODY AND SOLE This 10 minute introductory video was taken from a 2 hour 12 min video lecture. Bentonite Clay is Mother Nature’s pharmacy. It is volcanic ash with all the impurities burned out leaving pure trace minerals. Clay is a nano crystal of highly charged electromagnetic energy from the thermodynamic heat of a volcano. It can NOT be duplicated in a laboratory. Only God can make clay.
  • 15. Most clays have a high alkaline pH. Clay is homestatic and as such is an adaptogen that brings balance and equilibrium to the body. A balanced body can heal itself. That is what the body is designed to do when it isn’t in overload and unable to filter out the build up of toxins and wastes in the body that begin causing health problems. Bentonite Clay’s strength lies in its ability to adsorb and absorb, to suck into itself toxins, chemicals, viruses, molds, and the bad bacteria, hold them captive within the molecule and carry them out of the body. The electromagnetic energy of the clay stimulates circulation, bringing blood flow and oxygen to revitalize cellular repair and awaken latent cell energy. It seems hard to believe that a simple handful of clay soil can help with so many things but it really can; in a remarkably short amount of time and with great ease it brings about swift results. The beauty of clay is it is so safe. The FDA gives Bentonite Clay a GRAS rating meaning Generally Regarded as Safe. There is a long recorded history of animals in the wild instinctually seeking and eating clay to heal themselves. The medicine men of many aboriginal tribes have long used clay as part of their healing treatments. The kicker is all clays are different, even within the same family of clays so it is important to know your clays. The Smectite family of clays is known for healing clays. Bentonite is a Smectite clay. Redmond Clay is a sodium/calcium bentonite clay. Albeit all clays have some healing potential, there are a few that are amazingly stronger than others. Some are good for internal use and others are much better for external use. A few are exceptional in both areas. Redmond Clay is such a clay…it’s “pulling” power is very strong, and it is excellent for both internal and external use. From a gentle internal cleansing to healing wounds in half the time, to stopping Acid Reflux and intestinal disorders, to stopping food poisoning, to detoxing heavy metals, to healing burns and insect bites, to mending broken bones rapidly, to relieving strained muscles, to helping skin rashes, acne and gum problems, to aiding children with Autism, to expelling internal parasites, to stopping anemia, clay is a natural replacement to most drugs with no organ damaging negative side effects. Clay Baths are quickly becoming regarded as a safe and easy way to detox the body from heavy metals. Besides, they are very relaxing, and the relieve muscle strain and soreness. Your skin feels heavenly after the bath. Bentonite, an edible, mineral-rich clay, has been used for centuries to draw toxins away from intestinal walls while cleansing the colon. Another use for bentonite clay, which is very timely considering the recent natural and the Fukushima nuclear disaster
  • 16. in Japan, is adsorption of radiation. Not only does bentonite clay adsorb radiationi from nuclear fallout, it also adsorbs any kind of radiation. Bentonite clay is sometimes referred to as “green” healing clay. It is created naturally from the combination of volcanic ash minerals called montmorillonite and ocean water. Depending on the source, bentonite clay is loaded with naturally occurring minerals such as potassium, calcium, and sodium. When bentonite gets wet, it expands, much like a sponge does. However, rather than absorbing toxins the way a sponge might, bentonite clay works more like a magnet. This process is called adsorption, which is spelled with the letter “d.” Bentonite clay adsorbs because it carries both negative and positive charges on its surfaces and edges. Toxins are attracted to the bentonite like magnets, bond to the chemicals in the clay, and are carried out of the body in the small spaces created when the clay is wet. According to a 2006 study published in Radiation Protection Dosimetry, which was performed by a team of scientists led by V. Correcher and entitled “Thermal Stability of the Thermoluminescence Trap Structure of Bentonite,” bentonite clay was studied because of its known capabilities to break bond links, form hydrolyzed ions, and redox reactions. The study documented the “exponential distribution of trapped electrons.” In another scientific study, bentonite clay was tested to determine its efficacy in reducing high-energy gamma irradiation of adenine. According to chemists at Duke University, adenine is one of the most important organic molecules found in the human body. Adenine is an integral part of human DNA, RNA, and ATP. In this study, published in Cellular and Molecular Biology in 2002, irradiated adenine recovered much quicker in systems containing clay than in those which did not contain clay. Results showed that bentonite clay acts as a surface protector against radiation of adenine. Taken orally, bentonite clay is used to detoxify the digestive system, eliminate intestinal parasites, strengthen the immune system, and fight free radicals. It also helps remove heavy metals from the body and assists in the process of liver detoxification. Used externally, bentonite clay is often a main ingredient in compresses, clay packs, and facial masks. Redmond Clay is NOT a wonder drug. In fact, it is not a drug at all! It is simply a natural, “home remedy” that has been used since the early 1900′s for a variety of medical problems. When starting the clay internally, go slow! Start with 1/3 tsp daily and drink plenty of water. During the 2nd week, take 2/3 tsp, working your way up to 1 tsp of clay a day.
  • 17. This will minimize the “healing crisis” your body will experience as the clay cleans and detoxes. Videos: EarthpasteAmazinglyNaturalToothpaste:YourFirstTime Review | Earthpaste Natural Toothpaste FAQs Earthpaste delivers all the benefits you expect from a toothpaste without any chemicals or unnatural additives. It’s toothpaste unlike any other you’ve experienced. Earthpaste is safe to eat. Each ingredient has been used to support healthy systems. Earthpaste is amazingly natural toothpaste. You’ll see the difference on your brush and feel the difference in your mouth. Why did you create Earthpaste? Because we couldn’t find a toothpaste that we felt good about using for ourselves and our families that also worked great. Even many natural toothpaste brands have added things like fluoride, glycerin, foaming agents and chemical preservatives. What is the problem with fluoride? When it comes to minerals, form is the key. Many health experts agree that the sodium fluoride added to water supplies and toothpaste is toxic and should be avoided. This is why toothpastes with fluoride have a warning advising to call poison control if more than a small amount is swallowed.
  • 19. What is the problem with glycerin? Among other things, glycerin is the base for many liquid soaps and on the body isn’t a problem. However, in the mouth, glycerin creates a coat or film that won’t rinse away. Many natural dentists say this glycerin film on teeth can prevent the teeth from being able to remineralize thereby weakening the teeth. What is the problem with foaming agents such as SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate)? Among other things, foaming agents such as SLS are said to have a drying effect on the mouth which can increase mouth acidity. These chemicals are also known to cause membrane disruption and trauma in the mouth leading to canker sores. Why so few ingredients? Because we believe there is power in nature and in simplicity. Purified Water, Redmond Clay, Xylitol, Essential Oil (Cinnamon, Wintergreen or Peppermint), Real Salt, Tea Tree Essential Oil, Menthol (Only in the Wintergreen & Peppermint varieties). What does each ingredient do? • Purified Water: Used to hydrate the clay. • Food Grade Redmond Clay®: A natural polisher and cleanser that is also mineral rich and alkaline. • Xylitol: Sweetener and also recommended by many for tooth health. • Tea Tree Oil: Anti-bacterial properties, promotes gum health, and bad breath fighter.
  • 20. • Other Essential Oils: Added for flavor and other health benefits. The current flavors of Earthpaste are Wintergreen, Peppermint, Cinnamon, and Lemon Twist. • Menthol: Only contained in the wintergreen and peppermint flavors. Leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean. • Redmond Real Salt®: Enhances flavor and offers anti-bacterial properties associated with sea salt. What is the source of Xylitol? We only source non-GMO certified xylitol that is made from birch and/or corn cobs. What is the source of essential oils? The wintergreen and cinnamon essential oils come from Madagascar and Sri Lanka. The peppermint essential oil comes from Washington. While not certified organic, they are considered wild-crafted. Isn’t tea tree oil dangerous? Like a lot of things these days, there is some debate. We wrote an explanation to help people understand why we use tea tree oil. What is the source of menthol in the wintergreen and peppermint? A lot of companies use synthetic menthol. Not Redmond! Read more information about our menthol. Does Earthpaste feel different in the mouth? Yes. Because Earthpaste contains no foaming agents, it will feel thin in your mouth compared to foaming toothpastes. However, you will soon realize the foam is unnecessary. What is the pH of Earthpaste? On initial tests the pH has been between 9.6 – 9.7. Does it really work? Yes, very well. (But you knew we’d say that!) Will it whiten my teeth?
  • 21. We don’t make any specific dental claims in regard to anti-cavity or whitening. The feedback from customers and oral health professionals has been very positive. It’s wonderful to finally find a toothpaste we can feel good about using for ourselves and our family. Earthpaste Infographic Earthpaste delivers all the benefits you expect from a toothpaste without any chemicals or unnatural additives. View Here>> What’s In Your Toothpaste? How Abrasive is Earthpaste? When we got serious about turning our really-really-natural toothpaste idea into Earthpaste, we learned a new word: dentifrice. (Well, one or two of us already knew the word, but the rest of us, the ones who enjoyed normal childhoods, learned it only recently.) Dentifrice is the technical, old-timey term for any paste or powder used for cleaning teeth. In other words, it’s toothpaste. In a hurry? Short answer: Earthpaste has an RDA score of 130. But if you’re not in a hurry, you should read the post! We speculate on the tooth fairy’s earning power and explain why toothpaste pH matters. Every toothpaste, whether you call it dentifrice, or Earthpaste, or bright-blue-sparkly- gel, goes through standard testing to establish how abrasive it is. The test works more or less like this: a person wearing rubber gloves and science-lab goggles grabs a human tooth that has had its enamel stripped away. (Where do all the teeth come from? We don’t know, but if you’d like to lend realistic detail to your family’s tooth fairy tradition, there is a tale you could weave there. Business-savvy kids will appreciate knowing the possible source of the tooth fairy’s revenue.) Anyway, after the tooth fairy (or someone else) delivers these teeth to the lab and a scientist strips off the enamel, they zap a tooth with mild neutron irradiation before brushing it using a special toothbrush. The rinse water contains radiation brushed from the unlucky tooth, which is measured to arrive at a number called the radioactive dentin abrasion score, or RDA. (Some people call it relative dentin abrasion. Same thing.) Basically, they’re measuring how much of the irradiated dentin winds up in the water after brushing with various brands of toothpaste.
  • 22. It’s a voluntary program, and some experts have pointed out that RDA scores are rather pointless without also measuring the effect on enamel. That makes sense, since we all have enamel on our teeth when we brush, but RDA has become the standard number, anyway. The American Dental Association recommends dentifrices with RDA score no higher than 250, but we’ve never seen a brand get anywhere close to that high. The highest we know is a super-ultra-whitening formula from Colgate, which has an RDA score of 200. (Plain old baking soda has an RDA of 7.) According to independent lab testing, Earthpaste has an RDA score of 130, which the lab noted, with all the excitement you’d expect from a scientific lab, “is typical of dentifrices on the market today and is well within the accepted limits.” Some companies have attached a marketing spin to RDA scores, and I suppose you can’t blame them for trying. You might have heard that lower RDA scores are better for your teeth, but if you still have enamel protecting the dentin, it seems like a secondary consideration. A 2004 study showed that low-pH (acidic) dentifrices did cause “an increase in enamel abrasion that was greater than might be expected based on the RDA value.” In other words, if you’re concerned that abrasive toothpaste will affect your enamel, you might do well to find a toothpaste with a high pH. Oh, and did we mention that the pH of Earthpaste is right around 9.7? I mean, we shouldn’t really boast — we just let nature do her job — but that’s pretty darn high! What brand of Essential Oil is in Earthpaste? When we started experimenting with Earthpaste, we knew we’d rely on quality essential oils for natural flavoring and benefits they can bring. It didn’t take long for us to see that people who love essential oils really love essential oils, and that, for many of you, brand matters. For a while, we considered including essential oils by brand — just like we use Real Salt instead of “sea salt” and Redmond Clay instead of “bentonite clay,” we thought we might pick the best oils nature has to offer and put their logo on the tube with the others. But the research was tricky. We had a hard time telling the difference between really great marketing and really great oils, so we did a hard thing and took the easy way out: we stripped away the brand names, took the oils into the lab, and paid attention to the oils themselves. No labels, no marketing, just essential oils.
  • 23. In the end, we picked the source that worked best in Earthpaste, and, importantly, aligned most closely with Redmond’s guiding principles: 100% pure, wild-crafted essential oils. We believe nature has it right, and we’re happy we didn’t have to compromise with our essential oils. I know, you’re still waiting for a brand name, but we’re not going to tell you. We’ll keep this one to ourselves because of the passion people have for their particular brand of oils–the marketing messages are so intense, so divisive, and we don’t want to fuel sales for one brand (“Earthpaste chose our brand! Hooray!”) or upset sales representatives from brands we don’t use. Basically, in the battle over essential oil brands, we’re determined to stay neutral. We tried them all and picked the one that best matches our values and quality standards, and wound up with amazingly natural toothpaste that you can trust to be as natural as possible.
