2. •Created in 1925, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) strives to manage
and preserve the Appalachian Trail through inspiration and education.
Boasting more than 6,000 volunteers who contribute more than 200,000 hours
of work in maintaining the trail, the organization participates in basic
maintenance, building bridges, and ensuring the pathways are clear of debris.
The organization thrives on donations from its volunteers and members, one of
which is veterinarian Justin Little Jim, DMV.
3. •On the third Thursday of the month from July through October, the ATC hosts
themed events highlighting the trail.
In October, the ATC sponsors a free fall foliage hike where individuals can walk
through the Cumberland Valley from two different locations in Pennsylvania to
examine the changing colors of the leaves.
The evening two-to-three mile walk allows visitors to view the brilliant reds,
oranges, and yellows scattering the trees.
