  2. 2.  The SPCA in Richmond has been operating since 1891 and now serves as a no-kill shelter for over 3,500 animals annually. Every day, the workers at the shelter take care of more than 350 cats and dogs. Among the newest programs of the Richmond SPCA is the Clinic for Compassionate Care. Through this clinic, which was established in May of 2012, the organization offers low-cost, complete veterinary care for the pets of low-income owners. In addition to the pets of families with qualifying income, the clinic also provides care to the animals staying in the SPCA’s shelter and those that are adopted from it, as well as animals in other local pounds and shelters.
