Church’s organization
The leader was called the Pope (God’s representative on Earth) that rules the church in Italy.
The church’s dioceses were ruled by a bishop from a great Cathedral.
The most powerful bishops were the archbishops.
Archbishops sat on the king’s council and played a leading role in government.
Each diocese was made up of a group of parishes.
Every parish has its own church and parish priest.
6. 6. Parish Priests
Their life were often hard. Many of them were poor and others didn’t have education.
A priest grew food in their glebe.
They held church services, such as mass.
They performed baptisms, marriages, and funerals.
They tended the sick and poor people.
They collected a tithe of everything each villager produced to give to the Church.
If they had education, they taught Latin and Bible Stories to local boys.
8. 8. Cathedrals
They were built across Europe.
From the early 12th century they were constructed in Gothic-Style.
Their outside supports were called buttresses.
The cathedral’s buttresses enabled the walls to be thinner and taller.
Walls were pierced with tall windows, filled with stained glass, and designed to draw the eye upwards, towards God.
Interiors contained statues, carvings, and painted panels.
