The linguistic Aspect of ESP
language-centred approach
2 main types of ESP differentiated according to wether the
learner requires English for :
EAP
EOP
 English Academic Purposes (EAP) English for
Occupational Purposes (EOP). In English
Academic Purposes (EAP) there is English for
Medical Studies, and English for Occupational
Purposes (EOP) there is English for Technicians.
 EAP there is English for Economics and EOP
English for Secretaries. In English for Social
Sciences (ESS) divided into two EAP there is
English for Psychology and EOP (English for
Teaching).
At the next level ESP course
distinguish by the general
nature of the learners’
specialism.
Three large categories are :
EST EBE ESS
EST English for Science and
Technology
EBE English for Business and
Economics
ESS English for Social Sciences
Closer definition of ESP
a. ESP is not a matter of teaching specialized varieties of
English.
b. ESP is not just a matter of Science words and Grammar
a. ESP is not different kind from any other form of language
teaching
It is understandable that ESP is
an approach to language
learning based on learner needs.
So…
ESP is an approach to language
teaching in which all decisions as to
content and method are based on
the learners’ reason for learning

Esp is an approach

  • 2. According to Tom Hutchinson & Alan Waters Lancaster (1986) “English for Spesific Purpose is teaching which has specified objectives”
  • 3. The linguistic Aspect of ESP language-centred approach 2 main types of ESP differentiated according to wether the learner requires English for : EAP EOP
  • 4.  English Academic Purposes (EAP) English for Occupational Purposes (EOP). In English Academic Purposes (EAP) there is English for Medical Studies, and English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) there is English for Technicians.  EAP there is English for Economics and EOP English for Secretaries. In English for Social Sciences (ESS) divided into two EAP there is English for Psychology and EOP (English for Teaching).
  • 5. At the next level ESP course distinguish by the general nature of the learners’ specialism. Three large categories are : EST EBE ESS
  • 6. EST English for Science and Technology EBE English for Business and Economics ESS English for Social Sciences
  • 7. Closer definition of ESP a. ESP is not a matter of teaching specialized varieties of English. b. ESP is not just a matter of Science words and Grammar a. ESP is not different kind from any other form of language teaching
  • 8. It is understandable that ESP is an approach to language learning based on learner needs.
  • 9. So… ESP is an approach to language teaching in which all decisions as to content and method are based on the learners’ reason for learning
