  3. 3. Whether hiking, out skiing for the day or on holiday at the beach, good sun protection is essential. But how can you tell if the glasses you're wearing are suitable and give you enough protection? The first Julbo sunglasses saw the light of day more than 125 years ago. And since then, Julbo has worked to produce the very best protection for eyes whatever the conditions. Whether it's extreme brightness at the top of an 8,000 m peak or the elimination of glare in an offshore sailing race, Julbo has developed a lens adapted to each situation. With its experience of extreme conditions, Julbo understands the various factors involved in creating powerful lenses that offer the very best performance... and we can now pass our expertise on to you, helping you to understand the issues involved and advice on how to choose the right sunlenses.
  4. 4. 2. WHAT DO SUNLENSES PROTECT OUR EYES FROM? // Invisible light  Ultraviolet light: which is highly damaging to the eye. While UVA radiation is less dangerous, UVB causes burning and numerous symptoms affecting vision. All Julbo lenses offer protection against UV light.  Infrared radiation can be dangerous for the eyes in extreme conditions (high mountains, desert, etc.), causing dehydration and overheating. Julbo Alti Arc lenses provide optimum protection against IR light in all conditions. 5. 5. 2 // Visible light The dangers posed by visible light include glare, fatigue, interference and a possible temporary reduction in vision. However, this light is not always of the same intensity. Lenses are therefore assigned categories from 1 to 4 to give an indication of how much light they filter out. These categories also suggest the type of conditions the sunlenses can be used in, as the more intense the light, the higher the category should be. Warning: Category 4 lenses are not permitted for driving as they filter out too much light. !
  6. 6. 2 // Categories Coding Category Application Transmission A 0 Comfort 80 to 100% AB 1 Low light levels 43 to 80% B 2 Average light levels 18 to 43% C 3 Strong light levels 8 to 18% D 4 Exceptional light levels 3 to 8% Lens category depends on the quantity of light (visible light transmission rate) that passes through it.
  7. 7. 2 // Different sunlens materials Sunglasses used for sport also offer physical protection against external elements as well as providing good vision. In addition to improving vision, sunlenses must therefore also provide good resistance to different forms of impact such as abrasion. Most importantly with sunglasses, they must be light and comfortable to wear. It is therefore important to choose the correct lens specifications. 9. 9. 3 // Lens colors Lens color will determine how it filters light and give it specific characteristics. Green: Accentuates green contrast: ideal for golf or other activities on grass. Yellow/Brown: accentuates and highlights relief: ideal for outdoor sports. Grey: faithful color reproduction; ideal for watersports and everyday use. Red: accentuates red contrast. Copper or pink: accentuates contrast and increases viewing comfort: ideal for travel and driving. Blue: accentuates blue contrast.
  10. 10. 3 // Technical filters: photochromic treatment Photochromic treatment:  provides filtration that varies depending on the intensity of the light, and therefore covers up to 3 categories in a single lens.  darkens or lightens the lens in accordance with the environment and intensity of the light.  gives the glasses a wider range of use and protection that is always optimum. Use of NXT© lenses allows Julbo to use self-colored photochromic treatment which creates better resistance and longer product life. Source:général-optique.com
  11. 11. 3 // Technical filters: polarizing treatment Polarizing treatment:  provides the most effective protection and best comfort in the sun by operating on the principle of Venetian blinds, light only enters the eye along 1 axis.  protects from glare by cutting out rays of light reflecting off a flat / horizontal surface (water, snow, windscreen, etc.),  intensifies colors and improves contrast and relief. Visual noise generated by the reflective surface Polarized lens blocking reflections Light sent in all directions Reflective area Only rays of light providing information enter the eye Source:général-optique.com
  12. 12. 3 // Technical filters: other treatments  Anti-reflective: prevents glare caused by rays of light reflected from the back of the lens.  Anti-fog: prevents condensation and fogging.  Oil-repellent/Water-repellent: facilitates the run-off of liquids and cleaning of greasy matter deposited on the lens (fingermarks, grease from the skin or hair, creams, etc.).  Mirror: increases the filtration rate of the lens and makes the eyes less visible. Primarily an esthetic treatment.
  13. 13. 4. JULBO SUN SOLUTIONS
  14. 14. 4 // Julbo technology In order to offer the best sun protection adapted to each type of sport, Julbo uses 3 lens technologies: mineral, polycarbonate and NXT©  Mineral lens: The standard lens for sunglasses with superior optical qualities and good resistance but heavy in weight. It is therefore used in frames designed for activities requiring specific properties.  Polycarbonate lens: Light, and offering very good resistance, it is multipurpose and suitable for all types of activity, especially sport.  NXT© lens: Optimum qualities for an organic lens while benefiting from a mineral glass manufacturing technique (very low-temperature casting). Its transparency and stability over time are exceptional. It is ultra light, unbreakable and solvent-resistant.
  15. 15. 4 // Mineral lenses Of superior optical quality and highly resistant, they are ideal for desert and high-mountain environments. This lens is an essential benchmark for glacier glasses.
  16. 16. 4 // NXT lenses Julbo technical lenses have been developed for activities adversely affected by bright light and significant variations in light, such as skiing, watersports, outdoor activities and travel. These NXT© lenses offer lightness, resistance and great optical quality combined with photochromic and polarizing technologies. A more detailed description of these lenses is available on our lens selector. Photochromic Photochromic and polarized
  17. 17. 4 // Polycarbonate lenses Light and resistant, these lenses are versatile and suitable for all activities. Julbo Spectron lenses exist in several colors and categories to offer you a high-quality lens that best matches your own needs. +
  18. 18. 4 // Mirror-finish polycarbonate lenses The 3+ML Spectron lens has a multi-layer coating to produce a mirror effect matching the color of the frames, giving you both style and protection.
  19. 19. 4 // Polarized polycarbonate lenses These top-of-the-range lenses provide all the advantages of a Julbo polycarbonate lens with the additional comfort of a polarizing filter. These lenses therefore offer greater contrast and significant elimination of glare on various surfaces (snow, water, roads, etc.). +
  20. 20. 4 // Junior lenses These top-of-the-range lenses provide all the advantages of a Julbo polycarbonate lens with the additional comfort of a polarizing filter. These lenses therefore offer greater contrast and significant elimination of glare on various surfaces (snow, water, roads, etc.).
