Many species look like mosquitoes culicidae family but the wings do not have scales and their mouthparts are elongated like those of mosquitoes.it is a very large family with more than 5,000 described species.males are easily distinguished by its feathery antennae. In the adult flies are sometimes called the lakes and sand flies.
