DIGITAL WELLNESS WITH A HUMAN SOUL
We believe there is a more HUMAN way to overcome the current overwhelming
technology and digital dependency.
We want to solve the problem by creating beautifully crafted and digital-free solutions
(no more apps) that help us disconnect from our devices.
Our solutions are reminders that real connections start the moment we put our
smartphones away and we proudly celebrate that.
Digital wellness is not an app but an entire LIFESTYLE CHANGE. It’s about building
positive routines that enhance our human condition, not downgrade them. At Bagby,
our MISSION is to decrease people's screen time while increasing their HUMAN time.

About Bagby
Usually I don’t like to start by talking about such a negative event. We cannot avoid how COVID has
changed the world since it began in March of 2020. I like to say that instead of COVID changing the
world, it accelerated what was already happening, waiting to burst through the surface.
In the last 12 months we have faced incredible challenges, especially when it comes to human
relationships, the workspace and how we do business. I feel the world has changed from what was
supposed to happen in 10 years, to barely 2 years. This has all translated into higher levels of stress
but also resilience, adaptation and success. I believe humanity has become stronger.
Amid all this new order and seeing to the end of this tunnel that is the COVID pandemic, I think
2022 is the year to celebrate what we have achieved. We must go back to hugging our loved ones,
having some fun, reconnecting and understanding that face-to-face communication is still the best
way to connect with each other.
This is the reason why we wanted to take a different approach to this year’s report and add a FUN
element to it. We have called this new element TechSatire. #TechSatire is a parody of the everyday
use of technology in our modern society. To poke fun at people’s behaviors and technology in
general, we’ve created a series of posts that are fun and easy-to-consume. These pieces of
entertainment showcase realistic and socially acceptable situations, which, in reality, are often quite
paradoxical. Perhaps, tech is not as simple and flawless as how it is sold to us. I hope you’ll laugh
along with us and enjoy!
Thank you again for supporting our cause.
Stay human, stay safe.
FOUNDER'S LETTER
Juan Sánchez Bonet
Co-Founder & CEO
First launched in 2019, this is the third edition of the world's first collaborative paper
with a focus on Digital Wellness.
The format is very easy to digest as it brings personal perspectives from top leaders
and pioneers in the industry. We carefully selected a diverse and enriching group of
people from tech engineers, mindfulness teachers, entrepreneurs to therapists,
artists, writers, and retreat owners, and asked them to share some tips and inspire the
community. Along with their recommendations, this year we launched our
#TechSatire series; a parody of the everyday use of technology in our modern society.
These pieces of entertainment showcase realistic and socially acceptable situations,
which, in reality, are often quite paradoxical. Perhaps, then, tech is not as simple and
flawless as how it was sold to us.
This collaborative paper aims to have a positive impact on people like us who went
through a wake-up call and are trying to make a change in the ultra-connected
society we live in by joining forces with thoughtful leaders in the community.

still use?
What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve
experienced with technology?
People getting together at a conference that's in-
person for the first time in 3 years . . . and everyone
being on their phones!
Who in your life faces the most
challenges with technology?
I think everyone faces challenges with technology, just in
different ways.
How do you build human connection without
technology?
Q4
I try to prioritize opportunities for in-person interactions, and
when I'm with people I put away my phone.
What is your favorite unplugged activity?
Playing music with friends.
.
Share your forward-thinking vision of the
industry. Where will it be in 5 years?
There will be a growing divide between those who prefer
interacting digitally (likely in the metaverse and augmented
reality) and those who prefer to live their lives off their screens.
Also, AI and deep fakes are going to make it increasingly difficult
for society to reach consensus on what is true, with potentially
terrifying results.

I believe that we will see a shift towards more analog

going to be hard, but together we will be able to get it back!

"Balancing Tech Time Will

What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve
experienced with technology?
Not too long ago I was in line next to a family at the African
American Museum in Washington, D.C. As we were about to enter
the museum the dad announced to his wife and 3 kids "We're not
going to use any technology while in the museum, just our phones."
Then the mom replied "And our Fitbits to track our steps."
Who in your life faces the most
challenges with technology?
Until recently it was my mom, and it always put a smile on my
face!
I facilitate numerous retreats for organizations and when we
have experiential activities there is an agreement that this time is
device free.
What is your favorite unplugged activity?
Inspiration and motivation come from taking daily walks and
enjoying the beauty that surrounds me. Whether it's nature or
architecture the experience is heightened without a device.
Share your forward-thinking vision of the
industry. Where will it be in 5 years?
In 5 years I believe certain technological companies will be more
mindful of the human experience and what our brains need in the
way of human connection. We will be more balanced in our
understanding of the importance of face-to-face interactions,
without technological usage, and when technology adds real
value.

"Commit to enjoying meals without having devices
present. Utilize this time to connect with people through
conversation of shared interests, goals and struggles. It's
easy to consistently rely on a device, tv or phone if a
conversation gets awkward, however these are the
moments that we most connect to ourselves and each
other. Allow mealtime to be a time of exploration."

What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve

Who in your life faces the most
challenges with technology?
My children.
Return to the real world. Don't use tech for dates, food delivery,
music, or reading.
What is your favorite unplugged activity?
Walks with my family; to school, dog park, just a ramble. We talk
and connect more then than at any other time.
Share your forward-thinking vision of the

The major change I think will be the lack of desire to adopt every

I think more and more people are realizing that too much screen
consumption can have very harmful effects on our lives and our
health. Popular platforms have lost the trust of their users in
recent months. People want transparency and privacy. I'm
hopeful this will help new, more ethical businesses that put
human well-being before anything else. I think some big data

Each time I host a "40 Day Social Media Fast" I use Facebook

Who in your life faces the most

Oh goodness! That's a hard one. My husband is on his phone
most (and classifies almost everything as "work") but I can see
how it affects our three teenagers socially, emotionally,
relationally, physically... even spiritually!
When we disconnect with all the people we "like" it's easier to

II believe that people are so connect today that we are actually

Playing card games with my friends and family.
Share your forward-thinking vision of the

Tech will move towards more ethical, user-centric industry
standards with software designers and youth activists acting as
the catalysts.

"By working together we can
amplify our voices."
What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve
experienced with technology?
Teaching courses online about how to reduce screen time. So
far nobody is addicted to online learning tho!
Who in your life faces the most
challenges with technology?
My sons were the first generation to be given tech as children
without knowing the risks of overuse.
I started playing pickleball to meet new people, create shared
experiences, meet new people, and have opportunities to laugh
together.
What is your favorite unplugged activity?
I'm an avid traveler, exploring new places and meeting new
people. But really I appreciate anytime that doesn't involve
technology! Even washing the dishes or quite time folding laundry.
Share your forward-thinking vision of the
industry. Where will it be in 5 years?
Hopefully, in 5 years citizens in modern societies will realize that
time online comes with great risks to youth development and
adult mental health. The focus will turn back to families and value
true social-economic growth. Social media will come with strict
warnings and content & algorithm design will be safer for those
under 18 to protect them from harm and overuse.
A real watch or no watch. To be untethered to tech is essential
to feel human.

Those most vulnerable.
Using technology as a bridge to IRL connections.
What is your favorite unplugged activity?
Hiking with friends.
Share your forward-thinking vision of the
industry. Where will it be in 5 years?
I have a lot of confidence in AI making Digital well-being more
effective and easier to manage. For example, Microsoft Viva
Insights gets to understand our behaviour and gives helpful

useful.

Jean Rogers "Together is the only way
we'll tackle the biggest challenges
of our time."
What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve
experienced with technology?
I recently went into the physical bank building to make a deposit and
ask a couple of questions. The teller said she'd be happy to do the
deposit for me, but wouldn't I rather use my mobile app. I explained
that I came to the bank to see and talk with people. She proceeded
to take a photo of the check and deposit it just like I would on a
mobile app. This must be why so many branches have closed.
Who in your life faces the most
challenges with technology?
My son struggles with ADD. Some tech keeps him on track, like
calendar reminders, other tech exacerbates his distraction, like
video games.
Invite friends to go sailing, organize Screen-Free Week events at
our place of worship, getting the family together for random
dinners, not just holidays.
What is your favorite unplugged activity?
I enjoy drawing and watercolor painting still life and landscape
pieces; walking after dinner in the long days of spring and
summer, reading an actual paper newspaper on Sundays.
Share your forward-thinking vision of the
industry. Where will it be in 5 years?
I see a future where technology has it's place under the radar of
real life communication and connection. The more we use our
human apps like empathy, compassion, and cooperation, the less
likely we are to fall intro the traps big tech has set for us.
I still write long hand every day with a paper and pen. I have a

What is your favorite unplugged activity?
I relax in my infrared sauna for 40 minutes every evening after

What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve

People trying to write in a Google Doc, while Twitter is open in

Who in your life faces the most

Our children. There are so many challenges and opportunities.
I get out on my bike. You really can't check a screen
(if you want to stay upright).
What is your favorite unplugged activity?
I leave my phone at the office and walk to get my lunch. A few
minutes of tech-free bliss!
Share your forward-thinking vision of the
industry. Where will it be in 5 years?
Tech is social, so we'll still have problems, maybe just with new
apps. But the solutions are also timeless - focus, connection,
and time in nature. Many more will be bought in to the solutions -
to a great net benefit.

Georgie Powell " Digital wellbeing is about using
technology intentionally to improve,
not detract, from our lives.."
What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve
experienced with technology?
When people check the weather on their phone, rather than
looking out of the window.
Who in your life faces the most
challenges with technology?
Challenges are hard to define and take many forms. Whilst the
older generations in my life have more of a 'challenge' putting
their device down (they are the chief phubbers), there are
younger people in my life who are more emotionally influenced by
the content they see, a very different type of challenge. I think we
are all challenged by technology in one way or another.
Human connections start with ourselves. Having the space to
rest, to be bored, to connect with nature is so important. For
connecting with others, I make a conscious effort to look
everyone I pass in the eye and say hello.
What is your favorite unplugged activity?
So many! Currently gardening. I also love reading to my girls.
Share your forward-thinking vision of the
industry. Where will it be in 5 years?
From a work perspective, technology will evolve to better keep
up with a work landscape which is remote, asynchronous and
where the ability to reliably and consistently do focused, deep
work is a differentiating skillset.

Leigh- Chantelle "More conscious choices improve
the way we communicate, what we

What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve
experienced with technology?
People spending time online to "connect" with people but are
too overwhelmed with being online that they have no time to
speak to people or see people in real life.
Who in your life faces the most
challenges with technology?
Different people have different challenges. Overall, people who
have less technology self-efficacy will always believe they
cannot adapt to new technologies and updates.
I use audio messages a lot (instead of texts) and chat on the
phone with people. I also participate in a lot of outdoor activities
and encourage friends to join me for catching up.
What is your favorite unplugged activity?
(Ocean) swimming, yoga, Pilates, bush walks, beach walks,
reading non-fiction books, calligraphy and lettering, deep
conversations.
Share your forward-thinking vision of the
industry. Where will it be in 5 years?
In a positive and ethical world, in five years' time technology
companies will be tethered, demonopolized, and taxed properly;
people will have more ownership of their data and transparency
towards how it is used; people and companies will see the
benefits of digital wellness and use technology as tools if and
when required. Also, I would prefer less techno solutionism and
fewer people who blindly follow horrible technology creators and
their opinions.

What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve

Using another app to track screen time and losing sight of the
main goal: improving our wellbeing and the time we spend away
from technology.
Who in your life faces the most
challenges with technology?
My wife but I do, too.
I try not to share memes and stories on Whatsapp groups. If you
want to know what happened yesterday, you need to come out
to the real world and get involved.
What is your favorite unplugged activity?
Running in Raleigh's greenways and playing soccer until my left
knee allow me to do so.
Share your forward-thinking vision of the
industry. Where will it be in 5 years?
I feel the Metaverse will increase the time we spend in the digital
world, especially due to the fact that the experience will be much
more immersive (all 5 senses).
Also, how we link digital wellness to productivity will accelerate
the adoption of digital wellness in the workspace and the creation
of new job roles that will become more necessary than ever

Digital Wellness Report 2022 2023 by Bagby

  • 2. DIGITAL WELLNESS WITH A HUMAN SOUL We believe there is a more HUMAN way to overcome the current overwhelming technology and digital dependency. We want to solve the problem by creating beautifully crafted and digital-free solutions (no more apps) that help us disconnect from our devices. Our solutions are reminders that real connections start the moment we put our smartphones away and we proudly celebrate that. Digital wellness is not an app but an entire LIFESTYLE CHANGE. It’s about building positive routines that enhance our human condition, not downgrade them. At Bagby, our MISSION is to decrease people's screen time while increasing their HUMAN time. • 3. Usually I don’t like to start by talking about such a negative event. We cannot avoid how COVID has changed the world since it began in March of 2020. I like to say that instead of COVID changing the world, it accelerated what was already happening, waiting to burst through the surface. In the last 12 months we have faced incredible challenges, especially when it comes to human relationships, the workspace and how we do business. I feel the world has changed from what was supposed to happen in 10 years, to barely 2 years. This has all translated into higher levels of stress but also resilience, adaptation and success. I believe humanity has become stronger. Amid all this new order and seeing to the end of this tunnel that is the COVID pandemic, I think 2022 is the year to celebrate what we have achieved. We must go back to hugging our loved ones, having some fun, reconnecting and understanding that face-to-face communication is still the best way to connect with each other. This is the reason why we wanted to take a different approach to this year’s report and add a FUN element to it. We have called this new element TechSatire. #TechSatire is a parody of the everyday use of technology in our modern society. To poke fun at people’s behaviors and technology in general, we’ve created a series of posts that are fun and easy-to-consume. These pieces of entertainment showcase realistic and socially acceptable situations, which, in reality, are often quite paradoxical. Perhaps, tech is not as simple and flawless as how it is sold to us. I hope you’ll laugh along with us and enjoy! Thank you again for supporting our cause. Stay human, stay safe. FOUNDER'S LETTER Juan Sánchez Bonet Co-Founder & CEO
  • 4. First launched in 2019, this is the third edition of the world's first collaborative paper with a focus on Digital Wellness. The format is very easy to digest as it brings personal perspectives from top leaders and pioneers in the industry. We carefully selected a diverse and enriching group of people from tech engineers, mindfulness teachers, entrepreneurs to therapists, artists, writers, and retreat owners, and asked them to share some tips and inspire the community. Along with their recommendations, this year we launched our #TechSatire series; a parody of the everyday use of technology in our modern society. These pieces of entertainment showcase realistic and socially acceptable situations, which, in reality, are often quite paradoxical. Perhaps, then, tech is not as simple and flawless as how it was sold to us. This collaborative paper aims to have a positive impact on people like us who went through a wake-up call and are trying to make a change in the ultra-connected society we live in by joining forces with thoughtful leaders in the community. A yearly collaboration with key digital wellness experts

  • 6. Author of How to Break Up With Your Phone and The Power of Fun ScreenLifeBalance.com Catherine Price What digital-free item/tool do you still use? What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve experienced with technology? People getting together at a conference that's in- person for the first time in 3 years . . . and everyone being on their phones! Who in your life faces the most challenges with technology? • 22. Workplace Strategist, Executive Leadership Coach HollandHaiis.com Holland Haiis "Balancing Tech Time Will Make You Happier." What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve experienced with technology? Not too long ago I was in line next to a family at the African American Museum in Washington, D.C. As we were about to enter the museum the dad announced to his wife and 3 kids "We're not going to use any technology while in the museum, just our phones." Then the mom replied "And our Fitbits to track our steps." Who in your life faces the most challenges with technology? Until recently it was my mom, and it always put a smile on my face! I facilitate numerous retreats for organizations and when we have experiential activities there is an agreement that this time is device free. What is your favorite unplugged activity? Inspiration and motivation come from taking daily walks and enjoying the beauty that surrounds me. Whether it's nature or architecture the experience is heightened without a device. Share your forward-thinking vision of the industry. Where will it be in 5 years? In 5 years I believe certain technological companies will be more mindful of the human experience and what our brains need in the way of human connection. We will be more balanced in our understanding of the importance of face-to-face interactions, without technological usage, and when technology adds real value. I continue to use books for all my research, learning, and pleasure reading. Q5 Q6 Q3 Q2 What digital-free item/tool do you still use? How do you build human connection without technology? Q4 Q1
  • 23. Workplace Strategist, Executive Leadership Coach HollandHaiis.com Holland Haiis MY KEY DIGITAL WELLNESS TIP "Commit to enjoying meals without having devices present. Utilize this time to connect with people through conversation of shared interests, goals and struggles. It's easy to consistently rely on a device, tv or phone if a conversation gets awkward, however these are the moments that we most connect to ourselves and each other. Allow mealtime to be a time of exploration."
  • 24. Author of forthcoming 'Raising Hell, Living Well', @folkrebellion FolkRebellion.com Jess Elefante Davis "Living well in today's world means becoming aware of the influences we are under." What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve experienced with technology? People being worried about privacy but welcoming Alexa, Nests, and other smart listening devices into their homes. Who in your life faces the most challenges with technology? My children. Return to the real world. Don't use tech for dates, food delivery, music, or reading. What is your favorite unplugged activity? Walks with my family; to school, dog park, just a ramble. We talk and connect more then than at any other time. Share your forward-thinking vision of the industry. Where will it be in 5 years? The major change I think will be the lack of desire to adopt every new thing from the younger generation. The pandemic unexpectedly changed everything and I think these kids who were stuck home are craving face to face fun. Actual books, notebook, and pen. Q5 Q6 Q3 Q2 What digital-free item/tool do you still use? How do you build human connection without technology? Q4 Q1
  • 25. Author of forthcoming 'Raising Hell, Living Well', @folkrebellion FolkRebellion.com Jess Elefante Davis MY KEY DIGITAL WELLNESS TIP "Understanding how the digital world is influencing you is key to becoming free from its influence. Ditch the phone in your backpocket and replace it with a notebook. Count every time you reach for your phone, what you were doing, how you felt. Find the pattern, triggers, and then what was lost because of it."
  • 26. Founder of Vivala @vivala_offline VivalaOffline.com Laurie Michel "Technology must remain in its place as a tool." What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve experienced with technology? People taking a bath with their phone to relax. Who in your life faces the most challenges with technology? Friends. Cooking a nice dinner. What is your favorite unplugged activity? I love spending time riding horses. Share your forward-thinking vision of the industry. Where will it be in 5 years? I think more and more people are realizing that too much screen consumption can have very harmful effects on our lives and our health. Popular platforms have lost the trust of their users in recent months. People want transparency and privacy. I'm hopeful this will help new, more ethical businesses that put human well-being before anything else. I think some big data companies are going to have a hard time in the next few years. A daily planner. Q5 Q6 Q3 Q2 What digital-free item/tool do you still use? How do you build human connection without technology? Q4 Q1
  • 27. Founder of Vivala @vivala_offline VivalaOffline.com Laurie Michel MY KEY DIGITAL WELLNESS TIP "Hide your phone when you need to focus on a task at work so you don't get distracted!"

What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve experienced with technology? :) Who in your life faces the most challenges with technology? young teenager. I leave my phone at home on date night every Saturday night. What is your favorite unplugged activity? Anything in the mountains—hiking, skiing, or horseback riding. Share your forward-thinking vision of the industry. Where will it be in 5 years? Parents will be more equipped with the resources they need to keep their children safe from the harms of technology. Schools will understand when and how technology should be used (delayed and with purpose). Last, I'm hopeful there will be more government regulation to protect our kids from digital dangers. A paper planner! Q5 Q6 Q3 Q2 What digital-free item/tool do you still use? How do you build human connection without technology? Q4 Q1
  • 29. Founder of Better Screen Time, @betterscreentime BetterScreenTime.com Andrea Davis MY KEY DIGITAL WELLNESS TIP "Create one screen-free daily ritual—a family walk, family dinner, bedtime stories, morning meditation, etc."

  • 31. Founder: Protect Young Eyes @protectyoungeyes ProtectYoungEyes.com Chris Mckenna "Real life is best. It's never made better by the presence of technology." What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve experienced with technology? Parents who tell their kids to put their phones down. And check their fantasy football scores Who in your life faces the most challenges with technology? My son. He has Down syndrome and his amazing brain really struggles to detach itself from a glowing screen. Bi-weekly Saturday morning breakfast with four other men, slugging our way through our relationship with God, life, marriage, and fatherhood. What is your favorite unplugged activity? I run and run and run. Up sand dunes (my favorite). Through the woods (my second favorite - even better if it's raining!). No headphones. Ever. Share your forward-thinking vision of the industry. Where will it be in 5 years? I can only hope that the all countries follow the UK's lead, and implement a GLOBAL Age Appropriate Design Code. We MUST build an internet that our children deserve. I'm lost without my Moleskin. It's my daily schedule, my to-do list, and I love writing things down. Q5 Q6 Q3 Q2 What digital-free item/tool do you still use? How do you build human connection without technology? Q4 Q1
  • 32. Founder: Protect Young Eyes @protectyoungeyes ProtectYoungEyes.com Chris Mckenna MY KEY DIGITAL WELLNESS TIP "Make porn the norm in your home! Rob curiosity of its power over your children by speaking early, open, and often about this important topic."
  • 33. Author of "The 40 Day Social Media Fast" @wendyspeake WendySpeake.com Wendy Speake "Sometimes we have to put our phones down in order to look up!" What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve experienced with technology? Each time I host a "40 Day Social Media Fast" I use Facebook and Instagram to invite all of my online friends! Who in your life faces the most challenges with technology? Oh goodness! That's a hard one. My husband is on his phone most (and classifies almost everything as "work") but I can see how it affects our three teenagers socially, emotionally, relationally, physically... even spiritually! When we disconnect with all the people we "like" it's easier to connect with those we love! Family, friends, and God too. What is your favorite unplugged activity? I love walking, hands-free. When I don't spend my time scrolling it's easier to do some strolling. Share your forward-thinking vision of the industry. Where will it be in 5 years? II believe that people are so connect today that we are actually disconnected from what matters most (and who matters most). I like to think that a revival of sorts is coming, when people will actively buck the tech-system and hop offline. Perhaps "old school" will look like flip phones, or no phones! Even when I'm fasting from social media I use the GPS on my phone! I'd be lost without it. Q5 Q6 Q3 Q2 What digital-free item/tool do you still use? How do you build human connection without technology? Q4 Q1
  • 34. Author of "The 40 Day Social Media Fast" @wendyspeake WendySpeake.com Wendy Speake MY KEY DIGITAL WELLNESS TIP "A Social Media Fast is more than a digital detox. We are exchanging our online distractions for real-life devotion — in our families and in our faith!"
  • 35. Director of Community Engagement @Linewize LineWize.com Teodora Pavkovic "Tools serve to help us build things, repair damages, and achieve goals - any tech that doesn't do that, isn't worthy of your time and attention." What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve experienced with technology? People not being able to answer the question: "How did you sleep?" without checking their wearable device. Who in your life faces the most challenges with technology? Currently - me! Full-time remote work keeps me glued to my screen. Lots of outdoor meet-ups with friends, especially in nature. What is the most paradoxical situation you’ve experienced with technology? When people check the weather on their phone, rather than looking out of the window. Who in your life faces the most challenges with technology? Challenges are hard to define and take many forms. Whilst the older generations in my life have more of a 'challenge' putting their device down (they are the chief phubbers), there are younger people in my life who are more emotionally influenced by the content they see, a very different type of challenge. I think we are all challenged by technology in one way or another. Human connections start with ourselves. Having the space to rest, to be bored, to connect with nature is so important. Also, I would prefer less techno solutionism and fewer people who blindly follow horrible technology creators and their opinions.
