  2. 2. WHAT IS A BLOG??? <ul><li>(n.) Short for Web log, a blog is a Web page that serves as a publicly accessible personal journal for an individual. Typically updated daily, blogs often reflect the personality of the author. </li></ul><ul><li>(v.) To author a Web log. Other forms: Blogger (a person who blogs). </li></ul><ul><li>Want to learn more? Visit wikipedia ! </li></ul><ul><li>Visit a student blog ! </li></ul><ul><li>Blogging in Plain English </li></ul>

THE HISTORY OF BLOGGING <ul><li>The modern blog evolved from the online diary. </li></ul><ul><li>By 2001, blogging was enough of a phenomenon that how-to manuals began to appear, primarily focusing on technique. </li></ul><ul><li>It is estimated that blogging will peak in 2007, leveling off when the number of writers who maintain a personal website reaches 100 million. </li></ul>
  4. 4. WHY BLOG??? <ul><li>Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject such as food, politics, or local news; others function as more personal online diaries. </li></ul><ul><li>Form of expression </li></ul>
  5. 5. WHAT’S ON A BLOG? <ul><li>A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. </li></ul><ul><li>Comments from other people </li></ul>

You can comment on some blogs! </li></ul><ul><li>The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>You can also disable comments OR block your blog so that only your friends can see it. </li></ul></ul>
  7. 7. IS BLOGGING POPULAR? <ul><li>As of September 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 106 million blogs. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>THAT’S 106,000,000 BLOGS!!! </li></ul></ul>

WHY IS BLOGGING BAD? <ul><li>Credibility of authors </li></ul><ul><li>Legal liabilities and other often unforeseen consequences. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The release confidential information. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Blogging and defamation. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Employees who write about aspects of their place of employment or their personal lives, and then face loss of employment or other adverse consequences </li></ul></ul>
  9. 9. TIPS FOR BLOGGING <ul><li>Never offer any personal information </li></ul><ul><li>Never post inappropriate pictures </li></ul><ul><li>Assume what you publish on the Web is permanent. THINK BEFORE YOU POST! </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Anyone on the Internet can easily print out a blog or save it to a computer. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Use blogging provider sites with clearly stated terms of use </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Make sure there is password protection </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Keep blogs positive and don't use them for slander or to attack others. </li></ul>
