What is Speech-Language Pathology? <ul><li>A health-related profession devoted to serving infants… </li></ul>SLPs may work with medical teams in the newborn nursery to help ill and premature infants with motor skills that are developed during the suck-swallow-breathe cycle and essential for early survival and later speech skills. A health-related profession devoted to serving children… SLPs may assist in designing alternative communication device systems for individuals who can not speak. Devices may be for short term use or long term use. Devices may be very simple (pencil and paper), to “hi-tech”.

Objectives of This Presentation <ul><li>Highlight the internal and external factors that impact assessment in our graduate program. </li></ul><ul><li>Provide a few examples of the Department’s responsiveness to these factors and strategies for course correction. </li></ul><ul><li>Emphasis on data sources, analysis, and incorporation as evidenced by syllabus revision </li></ul>

In the CMD Department, we <ul><li>Meet monthly as a faculty, with standing agenda items of curriculum and students. </li></ul><ul><li>Instituted an annual retreat two years ago. </li></ul><ul><li>During retreat, compare what we were already doing prior to the initiation of the “culture of assessment” that met the expectations for Student Assessment as disseminated from the Office of Academic Affairs. </li></ul><ul><li>Are on guard not to reinvent the wheel. </li></ul>

(Objective: 2 contacts per year) </li></ul><ul><li>Knowledge and Skills Acquisition (KASA) Summary Form For Speech Language Pathology (SLP) </li></ul><ul><li>Clinical evaluation forms to monitor acquisition of clinical skills. </li></ul><ul><li>Instructor Generated Forms </li></ul><ul><li>Exit Forms </li></ul><ul><li>Attendance Sheets, etc to monitor participation in group orientation each fall semester to review policy, academic and clinical requirements, student conduct, and procedures. </li></ul>

(Example: 2009 Cohort-Audiology Concepts/Clinical Management) </li></ul>
