    1. 1. Secondary Industries. <ul><li>This Power Point is going to explain why certain industries locate in certain areas. </li></ul>
    2. 2. Location of Industry. <ul><li>Before building a factory or opening a business, the best possible site has to be found for its location. </li></ul><ul><li>There are several different factors that need to be taken into account when deciding on the best possible location. </li></ul><ul><li>These can be divided into Physical Factors and Human and Economic factors </li></ul>
    3. 3. Transport. <ul><li>A factory will need good </li></ul><ul><li>road or rail links to bring </li></ul><ul><li>in products or take them </li></ul><ul><li>away. </li></ul><ul><li>Is this Physical or </li></ul><ul><li>Human and economic? </li></ul><ul><li>2. Why? </li></ul>

Flat Land. <ul><li>Flat land allows for </li></ul><ul><li>factories to be larger </li></ul><ul><li>in size. </li></ul><ul><li>Its also easier to </li></ul><ul><li>build buildings on </li></ul><ul><li>flat land which </li></ul><ul><li>keeps the cost </li></ul><ul><li>down. </li></ul><ul><li>Is this a Physical factor or </li></ul><ul><li>Human and Economic? </li></ul><ul><li>2. Why? </li></ul>
    5. 5. Labour. <ul><li>A factory will need skilled workers living in the area in order to function. </li></ul><ul><li>Give me one example of a factory that would require a skilled workforce. </li></ul>
    6. 6. Markets. <ul><li>A factory needs to locate near towns and cities where goods will sell. </li></ul><ul><li>Give me one example of a product that isn’t shown in the picture but would still need to be made close to its market. </li></ul>
    7. 7. Power. <ul><li>A factory will always need a good supply of water and electricity in order to supply power. </li></ul><ul><li>What current problems do we have with supplying power to factories. </li></ul><ul><li>How could modern technology overcome this problem? </li></ul>

Land Price. <ul><li>A factory will always </li></ul><ul><li>need good land that </li></ul><ul><li>is as cheap as possible. </li></ul><ul><li>This will allow for a </li></ul><ul><li>quicker profit. </li></ul><ul><li>Where do you feel land would be cheaper, in the inner city or in the country side? </li></ul><ul><li>How would this effect the environment? </li></ul>

Government Policies. <ul><li>Industrial development is encouraged in some areas and restricted in others by the Government of a country offering money to companies to locate their factories in certain areas. </li></ul><ul><li>What are the advantages of this? </li></ul><ul><li>What are the disadvantages? </li></ul>
    10. 10. Local Amenities. <ul><li>Pleasant surroundings with good leisure facilities help attract and retain a workforce. </li></ul><ul><li>Why do you think this is important? </li></ul><ul><li>What impact would this have on the environment as a result? </li></ul>
