This was a user interface design for a retro cellphone that used a display technology from Pelikon, a UK electroluminescent panel maker. Pelikon's hybrid EL stack combines black liquid crystal material as a shutter over the top of patterned phosphor. Icons are visible in all lighting conditions. The panel is waterproof and can be used to press on conventional dome switches.
The phone had functionality similar to StarTac. The 14-segment displays were 3/4" high and visible across the room.
