  4. 8. <ul><li>Once Librarian 1 has responded, he/she stays with the question until it is completed and Librarian 2 can no longer see the conversation. </li></ul>Situation 1: Librarian 1 responds to the question
  5. 9. <ul><li>A question comes in and both Librarians can see the question. </li></ul><ul><li>(Librarian 2 only needs to pay attention to the question on the top line.) </li></ul><ul><li>Librarian 1 is busy. </li></ul><ul><li>Librarian 2 is watching to see if Librarian 1 takes the question. </li></ul>Situation 2: Librarian 2 responds to the question.
  6. 10. Situation 2: Librarian 2 responds to the question. <ul><li>After 30-60 seconds, Librarian 2 responds to the question and </li></ul><ul><li>Librarian 1 can no longer see the conversation. </li></ul>
  7. 11. Situation 3: Librarian 1 checks to see if Librarian 2 (or someone else who may be logged on) can take the question. <ul><li>A question comes in from a student. Both Librarians can see the question. </li></ul>
  8. 12. Situation 3: Librarian 1 checks to see if Librarian 2 (or someone else who may be logged on) can take the question. Librarian 1 opens a new chat window (by double clicking on gmcastro) to ask if Librarian 2 will take the question. (Double click here to open a new chat window.)
  9. 13. Situation 3: Librarian 1 checks to see if Librarian 2 (or someone else who may be logged on) can take the question. Librarian 2 responds back to Librarian 1 – yes, she can take the question.
  10. 14. Situation 3: Librarian 1 checks to see if Librarian 2 (or someone else who may be logged on) can take the question. Librarian 2 now responds to the student’s question and Librarian 1 can no longer see the conversation.
  11. 15. <ul><li>When Librarian 2 has completed the backup shift, he/she may log out of Pidgin. </li></ul><ul><li>Go to “Buddies” and then to “Quit.” </li></ul>
  12. 16. <ul><li>Librarian 2 – Preparing for Backup </li></ul><ul><li>by starting Pidgin (PC users) or </li></ul><ul><li>Adium (Mac users) </li></ul>
  13. 17. <ul><li>PC Users </li></ul><ul><li>To prepare for your IM Reference backup hour (Librarian 2), simply start the Pidgin software running. </li></ul><ul><li>Pidgin will start from your “Start” button or may be on your desktop. </li></ul>
  14. 18. <ul><li>PC Users </li></ul><ul><li>When the Pidgin software starts, you’ll see the “Buddy List” box and you are now ready for IM backup (Librarian 2). </li></ul><ul><li>You can tell that Librarian 1 is logged in at the Reference Desk because you can see that “jpllimhelp” is also logged in. Your own username will not show on your Buddy List but will show on the Buddy List of others that are logged in. </li></ul><ul><li>Note that jpll_hspr (Hesper) is also logged in. </li></ul>
  15. 19. <ul><li>Mac Users </li></ul><ul><li>To prepare for your IM Reference backup hour (Librarian 2), simply start the Adium software </li></ul><ul><li>The Adium software will be in your applications folder or in your dock (if it has been placed there.) </li></ul><ul><li>Note that the Adium icon (duck) has its eyes closed when the software is not active and the eyes are open when you are running Adium. </li></ul>(Adium not active) (Adium is active and running.)
  16. 20. <ul><li>Mac Users </li></ul><ul><li>When the Adium software starts, you’ll see the “Contacts” box and you are now ready for IM backup (Librarian 2). </li></ul><ul><li>You can tell that Librarian 1 is logged in at the Reference Desk because you can see that “jpllimhelp” is also logged in. </li></ul><ul><li>Note that jpll_jrosen (Jeff) is also logged in. </li></ul>
