  • I’d like to talk a little bit about School, and a few tips that might help make things a bit easier.

Couple of hints here on this slide.
  • So, I don’t have to tell anyone in this room that School in general, and especially Lit class is a lot of W-o-r-k!!!... But...

I am going to show you functionality available in Microsoft Office which can help make our job as students easier.

What are the things that consume the most time:
Writing and Documentation- We’ll come back to some of this, but everyone here knows how hard it is to bang out that first draft, and document any sources you may have cited
And--Proof reading-- Like beating out the first draft and waking up with the keyboard key pattern molded into your forehead isn’t enough, the obsessing over your work to turn it into something another human might comprehend takes for----EVER!

  • We are going to focus on a couple of things:
Modern Language Association System of citations
Proof reading our own works and the work of our peers

How can we make it easier--

  • Despite the results of a completely un-scientific pole I took in the campus parking lot,

seven out of ten college students are wrong, and Alcohol will not help you get your home work done.

    however

  • Microsoft Office, just might help make things a bit easier
  • Lets talk about MLA first.
Citing a author for his or her work is simply the right thing to do. But to say that the MLA system is ambiguous and difficult to use, and perhaps even a bit objective when it comes to proper use would understating the obvious.

Lucky for us, Word has a tool built in--references
    References Tab-->
See here how you can select the formating of the citation
You can manage sources from the manage sources button, opens this pane (current is current document, master is a master library)
Clicking on edit you can edit your source

Source types include: Book, Book, Book Section, Journal Article, Article in periodical, conference proceedings, Report, Web Site, Document from Website, Electronic source, art, sound recording performance, film, interview, patient, Case Misc

Insert citation, you see here I am inserting from the existing source
By right clicking the source, you can edit the citation, adding pages like this, or edit the source

You can also insert your works cited by clicking the bibliography button, select type by clicking on it and it will insert.

  • The other feature I would like to quickly touch on is review

Review is a way to help proof read a paper, and make nice, neat, easy to read-- digital changes for consideration.

On the review tab of Word 2007
You can enable and disable the ability to track changes
After the feature is enabled, you can make notes, and corrections that will be easy to go back and accept or decline. This is useful especially when helping to proof read a peers work.
  • So that was super high level, and very fast, but hopefully it gives you a few ideas to play with and perhaps research on your own.

I’d like to thank Jim Klos at work, as well as recognize the “Florida Gulf Coast University” website, both of which were instrumental in my research on this topic.

While I don’t pretend to be a Office expert, I will be happy to use the remaining time to answer a few questions.

Thats it, Thank you and good night.
