Academic Achievements New Programs Hamad Bin Khalifa University has extended its academic offerings in 2017 by introducing three new programs at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science and Engineering. The University welcomed the first batch of students at the start of the academic year in the Master of Arts in Women, Society, and Development, Master of Arts in Digital Humanities and Societies and the master's and PhD in Genomics and Precision Medicine program. Graduation of First Cohort of Law Students Adding to recent achievements, the College of Law and Public Policy is expecting its first cohort to graduate this year from the Juris Doctor (JD) program, a first-of-its-kind graduate law degree in the MENA region. The program has been created through a strategic partnership with Northwestern University School of Law, and delivers a unique model of graduate legal education to meet the needs of Qatar and the region. Solid Growth Exploring both Islamic and conventional finance, the College of Islamic Studies offers graduates a Master of Science in Islamic Finance — an essential concentration as Islamic banking in Qatar constitutes approximately 25 percent of the local banking activity. Research Impact Stories Computing HBKU Qatar Computing Research Institute has developed machine learning algorithms to predict flight deck effects on the Boeing 777 as well as to optimize cargo loads for Qatar Airways. HBKU Qatar Computing Research Institute’s Advanced Transcription System (QATS), our state-of- the-art speech recognition system, has been used by Aljazeera.net to automatically transcribe news broadcasts. QATS has been recognized internationally with a BBC NewsHACK “Best in Show” award, the IP World Day for innovation and has been nominated in the 2017 World Summit Awards. HBKU Qatar Computing Research Institute’s outreach activities include the launch of a new Creative Space, which conducts fun activities to teach children computing skills. Our first summer computing camp program was recently fully booked within a day of its announcement. HBKU Qatar Computing Research Institute’s Artificial Intelligence for Digital Response (AIDR) technology collects and categorizes social media data that can be used to assist rescuers direct resources to areas most in need during disasters. AIDR recently analyzed data from hurricanes Irma and Harvey. Research Impact Stories Energy and Environment Design and fabrication of high efficiency solar cell using quasi-monocrystalline silicon Scientists from HBKU’s Qatar Energy and Environment Research Institute, in collaboration with EPFL, have successfully designed and fabricated a solar cell of 20.3% efficiency using quasi- monocrystalline silicon. This is an important milestone in producing cost-effective solar cells of high efficiency. The conventional high-performing solar cells are made of the expensive material - monocrystalline silicon. Specific treatments such as gettering allows the enhancement of the quasi-mono silcon’s electronic properties and makes it a viable material to develop cost- effective high efficient solar cells. Development of anti-dust coating which have reduced dust accumulation by half Scientists at HBKU’s Qatar Energy and Environment Research Institute have synthesized and tested an anti-dust coating based on titania nanoparticles. Although dry and sunny locations like Qatar are highly favorable for cost-effective energy generation from PV modules, the efficiency of the solar cells are negatively impacted by dry dust and soil which accumulate on the solar panel surfaces. The coating method is easy to apply, economical and long-lasting under harsh thermal conditions. The initial results are promising, and show that these thin film coatings have reduced dust accumulation by half in a week, when tested at the Solar Test Facility in Doha. Research Impact Stories Energy and Environment Demonstration of Ozone Depletion By Bromide Ions at air/water interfaces HBKU’s Qatar Energy and Environment Research Institute scientists, in collaboration with the Paul Scherrer Insitute in Switzerland, have successfully demonstrated the possibility of ozone depletion by atmospheric bromide present on liquid droplets and sea water interfaces. This groundbreaking achievement has been possible by combining the experimental work undertaken at Paul Scherrer Institute and the modelling work done at QEERI. The mechanism of ozone removal by bromide is of global interest, particularly for coastal areas subject to intense pollution. The impact of this work is high and will influence forthcoming studies in several fields, ranging from atmospheric chemistry to wastewater treatment. The outcome of this research will affect and influence future modeling for forecasting of atmospheric pollutants, especially in the presence of seawater, sea spray aerosols and vehicular emissions. Research Impact Stories Energy and Environment Innovative Technologies for treating produced water The successful development of a new membrane by HBKU’s Qatar Energy and Environment Research Institute scientists will enable fast, efficient and economic separation of emulsified oil/water mixtures. The unique properties of the membrane, including its surface super- wettability along with macro/nano structured pores on both sides of the membrane aims to make it more efficient by having higher oil removal rate and higher water productivity, when compared to conventional membranes. This is a much-needed development as the commercial membranes currently available are hydrophobic and densely structured, thus leading to the clogging of pores quickly with the viscous oil. Following the successful demonstration of the membrane in the labs, a pilot scale up has been initiated to demonstrate the applicability for treating produced water from conventional oil/gas and emerging shale gas fields, with the aim to meet and exceed the standards for environmental discharge and beneficial reuse. Research Impact Stories Energy and Environment Development of highly efficient hole-transport material Researchers at HBKU’s Qatar Energy and Environment Research Institute have developed a highly efficient hole-transport material (HTM) for use in solar cells and other optoelectronic devices. Based on inexpensive, readily available precursors, this innovative material offers high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of nearly 20 percent and greatly improved stability. This efficiency held nearly steady even after 1,000-hour stability tests, while other materials experienced a significant drop. The material can also be tuned to the highest occupied molecular orbital level, making it exceedingly versatile. Although this material is particularly well suited for solar cells— especially those using perovskite—this technology can also benefit lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), photodetectors, field effect transistors, and other optoelectronic applications.   17. 17. Research Impact Stories Energy and Environment Development of an Air Quality Index (AQI) and Inhalable Particulates Index (IPI) for the State of Qatar. Researchers from HBKU’s Qatar Energy and Environment Research Institute have developed an Air Quality Index (AQI) and Inhalable Particulates Index (IPI) for the State of Qatar. An AQI is used by government agencies to communicate air pollution levels to the public, and are based on pollutant concentrations and their adverse health effects. Standardized formulas for Air Quality Indices exist across the world; however, they are not representative of the coastal desert environment experienced by the population of Qatar.   18. 18. Researchers at HBKU’s Qatar Biomedical Research Institute were recently selected by AFFiRiS, an Austrian biotechnology company, and H. Lundbeck A/S, a Danish pharmaceutical company, to participate in a clinical study to further diagnose and treat Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. Qatar Biomedical Research Institute’s researcher recently published a paper titled “Autism spectrum disorder in Qatar: Profiles and correlates of a large clinical sample” reporting the first descriptive study of autism in Qatar which looks at the main contributing risk factors and the types of comorbidities associated with autism. The Qatar Biomedical Research Institute continues to contribute to capacity building and attracting the next generation to the research field. The Summer Research Program at QBRI is very successful, and the number of students joining this program is increasing from year to year.
